luvuhu in august.
Hi guys it's been a while.
Al the best for the new year.
I have a question about Luvuhu eco trail on the west side of the kruger .
I'm planning a trip for august and need some advise.
Is it worth while, where to sleep the night before the trail starts and how to get there.
Also gps. Coordinates will be great.
Please help.
Thanks guys.

Re: luvuhu in august.
Hi Bradley.
I did the trail in December and it is very much worth it. It was a great experiance. 4 of the 5 night we had elephants almost in the camp and the one nite we did not have them we had two prides of lions across from the river from us.
I know people are not that lucky, all I can say is that we were.

Re: luvuhu in august.
Thanks johan .
Wow sounded like you had a great trip.
I went on to there website and was very interested and we will be going that's final.
Just wondering how do I get there or I mean meeting spot and Did you drive up the day before?
Also the route how was it? Water crossing and inclines, decents and so on. Also we have a group of which I'm the only Toyota going. Can the landy soft roaders make it? Do we need hi ground clearance?
Also do yo have a pic or to too share?
Thanks again.
Cheers

Re: luvuhu in august.
Hi Bradley!
What do you want to know?
We've done the trail in April 2012 and it was great!
Starting on a Wednesday, we decided to book into KNP's Maroela campsite the previous Saturday. Wednesday morning it was a quick drive to Phalaborwa via Hoedspruit. We restocked, refueled and had lunch prior to meeting the rest of the crowd at 12h00!
A couple of formalities and we were on our way! Within an hour we reached the southern gate of Letaba Ranch. Once in the reserve it is tracks with a few minor obstacles. You drive to the KNP fence and then towards the Letaba river. You stop for the day at 16h00 and bushcamp. Next day depart at 09h00 and visit the Letaba/Klein Letaba confluence and later cross the Letaba river. Afternoon rituals remain the same.
3rd day is a long day and you will depart earlier! On this day you leave the Letaba Ranch, cross the Klein Letaba and then do aprox 30k's of fence driving. After that you move into built up areas. Late afternoon you cross the Louis Trichardt/ Punda road and move into the mountanous Makuya Park. Reach your camping spot on the Levuvhu river as the sun sets!
The next 2 days in Low Range 1st/2nd along the Levuvhu river with the last night's camping spot featuring ablutions with running water for the time on the trip! Places to be visited are Levuvhu Gorge and Mutale Falls. You cross the Mutale river and end up at Pafuri Gate at around 12h00 on the Sunday.
You can then either turn left and stay the night at Pafuri River Lodge or as we did, drive down and spend the last night @ Shingwedzi and leave the KNP at Phalaborwa Gate.
A couple of pic's here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/johanhaven ... 221991032/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and a set on our guide's FB: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set= ... 661&type=3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This trail is way better than the Lebombo Trail inside the park and I will do it again any time!!!

Re: luvuhu in august.
To answer your other questions.
The guide will decide if you can cross the Letaba. We actually did not as I was towing my trailer with my Condor! I think that is the most difficult obstacle! The Klein Letaba is a breeze! ( The pic's with the rivercrossing and the net!)
The transit day is fast gravel roads! The Jeep in the group broke a shock in a pothole that day!
Makuya is steep and lots of rocks. Some roads are paved but in poor state of repair. I spent the 2 days in the Makuya in Low range to avoid damage to my car and trailer. One of the other vehicles broke the U-bolts on his "Makro Special" trailer due to speed!
You will also see in the pic's me getting stuck in the Mutale river, but that is due to not deflating tyres! The Navara also picked up some battle scars as it was sitting to low under the heavy camper!
I will not tackle this route with a softroader!!!!

Re: luvuhu in august.
Thanks johan havenga.
Looks like you guys ahad a great time.
We also did lebombo and I found it also boring, I was looking for more.
You photos and the guides photos are great.
We were planning a " boys trip" but after seeing the ladies on your trip they looked rather comfortable,
So I'm going to take my wife as well.
Thanks for your help, it's was in depth and now I cannot wait to go.
Cheers
