Tim in Mozambique

Post by tim_warner »

Hi everyone. Thanks for having me on the forum. I am a South African who lived in America for a while but now I live in Mozambique and I am working here. I have a 2.8l hilux SFA 1993. I hope I can learn some more about my car and meet new people. I am 28 and I have a wife and two kids. My car has some minor modifications but I will be driving to JHB soon to get A LOT of work done. My car has been on Mozambican roads for 20 years so I will be getting suspension, rear main seals, power steering seals, air conditioner, canopy, roof rack and front wheel bearings and seal hub service. And finally a paint job. The car has 129000 km but starts and runs incredibly. Ay advice about where in JHB I can find a trustworthy mechanic is appreciated.

Welcome aboard Tim!!

I'm sure that the JHB guys will be able to help with reliable service centres. Just be a little patient if you don't get immediate assistance since many of them are away at this time of year, but once they return from their holidays you will get more feedback. ;-)

Thanks guys. I just wrote to the guys at ultimate 4x4 and told them all that my old bakkie needs. I will post a picture as soon as I resize it. I'm so excited to get the work done. My leaf springs are bending in the opposite direction. :o, rear main seal leaks, power steering gasket leaks, tie rod ends, need tires and rims. I drive on bumpy roads every day and I'm so thankful that I have a SFA because my coworkers are all having problems with there trucks cause none of them have upgraded there suspension to be able to handle 90% offroad all the time.

Merry Christmas. And happy new year guys. Give me a shout if your ever up in nampula Mozambique. I can be your translator.

Ja, look, 129000km is not a lot for any vehicle under normal circumstances these days, but that kind of mileage in Moz conditions (sand and bumpy roads, or no roads at all), with lots of low gearing will take it's toll a lot quicker on the whole vehicle in general. I think you have one of the more ideal vehicles to stand up to those harsh conditions, but some TLC will definitely be needed more regularly than normal. Personally I would opt for OME suspension ..... tried and tested over decades and arguably the best.

Good luck, and looking forward to those pics. ;-)

My thoughts exactly. I would like to get OME. Got a quote for around R20,000. This is the entire kit with springs shocks damper greaseable shackles etc.

She needs some work. Pictures to come.

You could save a few bucks by replacing the steering damper (if necessary) with a Monroe damper, Works just as good and will last almost as long, but at a fraction of the cost (no import duties).

Thanks for the pic! Nice old Lux!  I can see that the front springs have sagged considerably, so agree that it's time for replacement. ;-)

Montes nairuco is a nice place. We go there sometimes to relax. I heard there are crocodiles in the lake now.

It's not a bad idea to get a different brand name damper. I think I will. As soon as I put my OME shocks on I will be selling the ones I have on there now. Two Monroe and two Gabriel safari.

I'm going to browse the for sale part of the forum to see if I can get tires and rims, and a canopy, roof rack, for my truck

Those tyres have the wrong tread pattern, but the 'marie-biscuits' are perfect for almost everything except sand .... not enough foot area, so poor 'flotation' on sand. The flip-side is that the wider the tread, the more friction and the poorer the fuel economy on the open road, but I suppose that's less of an issue in your case. ;-)

I know. It's so hard to drive through sand. I have a locker in the diff but doesn't help me with the tires in 2 wheel drive.

Make for a bumpy ride as well. I'm so excited to get my truck in order. But it's a three day drive from where I live. :shock2:

Hello All,
Sorry im posting in an old section but I need some advice. I am in cape town and I am trying to buy a couple things for my 2.8 hilux SFA 1991.
I need a reconditioned head, head bolts, gasket, radiator and thermostat.

Is there a place you guys would recomend for me to buy this stuff. N14x4 wanted 9000 for a head and I mnot sure if it was reconditioned or new.

Thanks a million, tim

Midas and Autozone used to stock complete generic heads for the 4y (for the taxi industry) and those used to go for about 4½K. The 2.8 is not that popular, but it might be worth a try. Allan (Hoppy) would be able to advise you better in any event. ;-)
