Hilux D/cab 2.5 d4d vs 2.7vvti (Advise needed please...)
Hi Guys
I drive a 2005 2.7 vvti d/cab 2x4. Fuel consumtion is really a killer @ +- 6.7km/l. I drive allot for my own company and rising fuel price is killing me. At first I wanted to buy a different brand (ford, navara etc) but decided to stick to Toyota. Budget allows me to buy only a 2.5d4d? Would love to buy the 3l d4d
I want to change over to a 2.5 d4d D/cab 4x4. Mainly to get better fuel consumption and to have the luxury of a 4x4.
I would over time fit the bakkie with a chip / intercooler to get more power out of the apparently under powered engine.
What fuel consumption do you get on your 2.5 d4d?
Is the engine under powered?
Is this a problem for 4x4'ing and sand driving.
Does fitting a chip & intercooler really make a difference?
how much of a difference and is it worth the money spend?
What would you pay for a 2007 2.5 d4d srx D/cab +-140 000 km?
Is the 2.5 comfortable to drive everyday? or is the under powered engine a frustration.
Does the bakkie cruise comfortable at 120km/h on the open road?
Would really appreciate input from you guys.
thanks

Hi Niell,
Well, I'll just keep my thoughts on the 2.7 vvti to myself - his is a family forum after all.
ANYTHING will be better than that fuel-oholic, underpowered, good for nothing lump of metal that Toy sells as the 2.7!
I'm pretty sure the 2.5 will be fine as a daily commuter.
I'm sure some 2.5 owners will respond soon.

Cannot give you answers based on first hand experience, but without the chip / intercooler I believe it's slightly underpowered, so worth fitting it. Fuel economy should be pretty good, especially after fitting the above. You should have no problem maintaining 120 kmph on the open road. Excellent for off-road and sand driving. Price of such a vehicle would depend largely on it's overall condition / extras, but I would venture a guess on a standard model in good nick to be about R180 - R200k.

Heinrich (Traveler) will be able to shed some light on this issue. He was very happy with his 2.5. With chip and I/C you can get almost the same performance as the 3.0 D4D which in my mind is really good!

Re: Hilux D/cab 2.5 d4d vs 2.7vvti (Advise needed please...)
What fuel consumption do you get on your 2.5 d4d? I get average of 8.7-9.8km/l
Is the engine under powered? YES
Is this a problem for 4x4'ing and sand driving. Yes, the reason is when you go on holiday the vehicle is loaded
Does fitting a chip & intercooler really make a difference? a HUGE diffrence, expensive though.
how much of a difference and is it worth the money spend? Mine is from 75kw - 91kw, torque is from 260nm - 309nm. Worth it!!
What would you pay for a 2007 2.5 d4d srx D/cab +-140 000 km? ??
Is the 2.5 comfortable to drive everyday? or is the under powered engine a frustration. With a chip it is stress free.
Does the bakkie cruise comfortable at 120km/h on the open road? With a chip, yes! Without it, with a little effort yes!

I agree with Jacques, and I have gone whole hog and have chip, exhaust and intercooler and have around 118kW now!! I also fitted a snorkel that assists with a ram affect at speed!
I did it in stages, and I would I think if money is an issue, I would start with exhaust as it helps with lag, then snorkel. They are the cheapest of the lot. Then chip, then intercooler! This is my view others may no agree.
Hope this helps.

That is a lot, I also have a intercooler in my 2,5 but with a lot less power than yours. Like I said, only 91 kw and 309 nm.damazon wrote:Sorry not 118 actually 116.5

Do you have chip and exhaust as well? It climbed to 91/283 with chip, then 104.4/294 with exhaust, then 116.5/355.2 with intercoolerjacques kotze wrote:That is a lot, I also have a intercooler in my 2,5 but with a lot less power than yours. I've done mine about 4 years ago at SAC. They did a chip, Intercooler and what I can see on the exhaust is only a part of the exhaust pipe, not all of it. Can't remember if it is the first part or the last part of the exhaust.damazon wrote:Do you have chip and exhaust as well?
