Re: Zoom lenses
All lenses have a "sweet spot" and that gets smaller as the telephoto gets bigger. On the cheaper lenses the areas on either side of the sweet spot are considerably less than optimal while not too bad on the expensive / higher end stuff. Worth checking it out and doing some research before buying.

I found with the 70-300 you shouldn't exceed around 270mm, and not shoot with the aperture more open than 7.1 - then it is really sharp

NEWS FLASH!!
I have initiated a side-line project whereby I will become a distributor of certain well known photographic brands throughout the complete spectrum of photographic equipment and accessories. Once it is further along I will post a list of brand names but for now I can mention Sigma lenses.
Should all go as planned I should be able to offer prices that better or equal the big boys, (Orms / Game / Makro included), so if you're not in a hurry, wait and see what happens.
There will also be "B grade" stock available at considerably reduced rates. This B grade stock is stuff where the packaging has been damaged or opened and cannot be sold off the retail shelves. However the product itself, (re-packaged), will still be 100% and will still carry the full manufacturer's warranty.
I have noticed that we have a fair number of photographic enthusiasts and hobbyists .... Hilux Club members will get an extra discounted rate.
Sound exiting? Hold thumbs!

Andy where were you when I was kitting up with digital camera's, lens etc. after selling my film equipment... Man you could have saved me a fortune... Anyway still have space for a full frame Canon believe the latest 5D is out, so let me know if you have one of those at some stage. But only want the new one the older models are too slow for my liking... and maybe, just maybe a Cannon think its 10-20mm or 10-16mm but if its a L lens.Mud Dog wrote:NEWS FLASH!!

Re: Zoom lenses
If this goes ahead I will post all the details I can lay my hands on.
Just to give an example, I just got myself a "B stock", but brand new SIGMA telephoto lens (18-200/3.5-6.3 DC OS - CANON) with 3 yr warranty for just a little over 2K.
Orms direct price for the same lens is R4295.00 ....... ( http://www.ormsdirect.co.za/catalogsear ... acturer=51" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
That's like ½ price!! (Without my margin of course.)

Re: Zoom lenses
As I understand they are not always available .... only when there is "shop-soiled" packaging. 'Insiders' get to see these deals first and may purchase for own use ... not for re-sale or for friends. Thereafter they are made available to dealers who wish to carry / deal in B-stock. So if one is prepared to wait for such deals, and ready to act fast when they come up, then it's a total bargain. Of course I could always put you down on a 'waiting' list with my contact so that we get notified immediately when one comes up, which might give us a bit of an edge over other dealers.
First step is for me to secure dealer status with the supplier.

Val the new full frame from Canon is the 5D Mk III (unless you are talking of the new 1D ...). There was a light leak issue with the Mk III, and all cameras were recalled and the issue is now sorted. BUT, this caused a major backlog ! With Canon kitting out the worlds press photographers for the Olympics there is not enough stock to supply the rest of the world ....GI Jane wrote:Andy where were you when I was kitting up with digital camera's, lens etc. after selling my film equipment... On Thursday this week SIX cameras made its way to ODP in Joburg, and FIVE cameras made its way to ORMS (all 5 went to Cape Town, with nothing for the guys on the waiting list at Bellville ....)
Mark if you can lay your hands on one of these - NOW, I will drive up to EL to come and fetch it !! :)
Mark should you lay your hands on the Sigma 300-800mm lens my name is on the top of that list. But sadly it would have to be a 1/2 price deal, as the full price is just way out of my league ... actually my wife might not be happy when she hears what 1/2 price is on that lens either ...

Just came back from the Canon Roadshow in Cape Town. STUNNING !!
That 5D Mk III is an EXCELLENT camera !
Not sure why they decided to call it the Mk III - it is an ALL NEW camera, NO relation to the Mk II. and in fact, the Mk II will not be removed from the line up.

Cool, unfortunately missed the show... but don't want to miss the camera... Thanks for the feedback Chris.. I watched a promo on it a while back and it looks brilliant. Ja would love the 1D but then I would have to sell my house, or Hilux, but that is not open to debate, I can sleep in my Hilux, but not drive my house...ChrisF wrote:Just came back from the Canon Roadshow in Cape Town. Re: Zoom lenses
I enjoy photography and have learnt a lot through experimenting, and reading what the chaps say on forums.
One silly thing, that works a charm of stills, is to deflect the flash indoors. Even the standard flash creates way too much light. Use a white envelope for instance, and place it infront of the flash, with about a 45 degree angle away from you, so that the light bounces off the ceiling. The light will then be much more even and you will get photos that are less "washed out" with MUCH more detail.

- This was taken with my Canon 350D with a Canon 55-250 IS lens, which is by no means an "L" type lens. It is sold with some of the newer Canons as a "kit" lens. I bought is second hand off Gumtree, and enjoy it very much, as the IS makes a big difference, and as I photograph cakes a lot, it comes in useful there as well.

Re: Zoom lenses
Andy, if you can get a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 OS HSM (Nikon mount) for a good price, please let me know
Nothing is impossible - it just costs more

Re: Zoom lenses
Will do Andre' .... added it to the "feelers" I sent.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: Zoom lenses
Sorry about the poor focus ..... (no depth of field, aperture was too wide)Mud Dog wrote:If this goes ahead I will post all the details I can lay my hands on.
With that lens at 200 mm (full frame pic)
..... and the same subject at 18 mmm.
Close up it's not to bad either .....
