old story - ford v6 conversion changed - gwm efi running
Firslty I know there wil be alot off negative comments.
efi is a option but it will still not have the oomf i want
7m and lexus = expensive if done properly
Positve side thys once wrote that one of the best luxes he had was powered by ford v6 + see that stubs also went that route.
This is not my daily transport , only use is on evry other weekend.
Could some of the v6 experts please give advise? Hoppy , thys, mark
what should one take extra care of when doing such a conversion?

you are right Thabo I had a look at all the options and just can not jusify the money for 7m or lexus .
I can get a ford v6 motor for r2000.

I'm also looking @ the 2.5 turbo Ford/Mazda
Spoke to Hoppy and he said its a straight forward conversion just need to change the bell housing and the engine mounts.
Engine is about R14500.
Is it worth it? Or do you recon the 4y and do a EFI?

well, I am well aware of the thoughts out there on the Ford V6 etc etc... and you know what... I dont care, I am over the moon with mine and what Hoppy did for me.... I struggled with the 4y with running 33 " muds, lifted etc and am now well pleased.... only problem I have is the air intake touching the bonnet as hoppy moves them 180 degrees for the fuel overflowing in the weber carbs, but I have put spacers in the bonnet hinges for now until I can do the bodylift... otherwise, great value for money, sounds awesome, twin pipes, many people think its a V8... I also dont have the cash for a lexus etc so. So far I havent even needed to rev the motor above 3500 rpm.... so to all you purists out there dont judge and till I pass you on the road

Hoppy said to me that my engine was done by JT developments, its a spot on conversion, give him a bell, he will be more than pleased to give you advice and what to look for.....AEW auto, 072 129 1160.
All the torque is low down and being a V6 you dont have to Rev the hell out of it to have power to the wheels...have been offroad several times with it now and I love it....
Also check out Franco519 on the forum....he knows alot about these engines.....
as alot of people say FORD...first on rubbish dump
as hoppy says FORD for only racing drivers
Horses for courses at the end of the day....keep me updated...

Still the cheapest horsepower and they are reliable if fitted properly, they are lighter on fuel than a 4Y and you won't be passed by trucks on uphills.
On the downside, they are heavy and noisy and they will break the box if you use 5th gear while towing or under 100km/h.
Use a Hilux 2.4D 99 to 04 model radiator
Fit a proper visco or solid fan (not electric)
Rotate the carb 180 deg (off road use)
Run your fuel lines far away from any heat source
Get a Ford Courier 4x4 Sump & pick up
Redrill and step the flywheel to use a std Hilux clutch
Make a sleeve to fit the std hilux pilot bearing
Use the Hilux mounts and shrouds (not the V6 mounts)

on my Currier, V6 have a big electric, and no issues
here is the interesting tidbit
have a set of branches that fit V6 in a hilux!!
not sure what hilux
advertised it here long ago, people wanted it and in the end no one bought it, so its still available
need to go bump that add up!!

Anouther tip.
We had a V6 in a landy and a V6 in a Datsun trekker
Both had starting issues due to the starter motor's position under the branch.
A proper heat shield sorted it quickly.

on the started issues, yes the original starters were poor to say the least, and big and heavy
later, and I got one about 10 years ago
its a shorter and thiner and lighter one, think(not sure) its a Bosch, what a pleasure
they still going for R700/800 range

Hoppy advised me to modify the Ford flywheel to fit all Toyota Pressure plate, Clutch and Thrust bearing. Most of the bellhousing castings are a bit skew and contributes to some shuddering on the cluth, so that has to be checked, but Hoppy has plenty of experience on these conversions and also Louis from 4x4 Megaworld in Pretoria. My bellhousing is in for alignment at the moment and i'm going to fit a Quantum Clutch Kit. m2cw

got that bellhousing from sprimgbok scrapyard, they also sell new parts, when I did that conversion
not sure if the bolt patern on the hilux gearbox is the same. however know that they also had other bellhousing s

How much truth is there about the oil channels in the crank blocking up and causing bearings to run with less than required oil? I read somewhere about a conversion where the oil channels where bored a bit and the motor runs and revs smoother..

however, for high reving motors instead of enlarging the existing oil holes, you could have the crank cross drilled

the 4y are know to be pulled proof, almost and self would not tinker with anything on it, unless full out modification was being done
extra oiling for the crank, like higher oil pressure and cross drilling of cranks for better lubrication. cant hurt, however those are practised mainly on high reving race motors
and the 4y and the V6, both have strong enough bottom ends that if build properly with good quality parts, should need no further modification
the V6 stock bottom end starts coming apart after 600hp yes turbo and nos and used for drags
with steel crank I-beam conrods, turbo and nos and over 1000rwhp has been achieved
conclusion for what we are using them for, they are fine as they are

ok then decided to sell the original 4y and use the cash to get the bellhousing and re-do the v6.
Anybody have an idea what its going to cost me to re con the v6? +-

tried to post the other day, however picked up connection problems, so lets try again
depending how far you are going, engineering could cost you more then spares
the last time I redid a V6, did new pistons, new valves, new oil pump. . . . new cam bushes
on a fir V6, only use Payen gaskets
would estimate around 7K
a 3.4 would come to around 10K

ok changed my mind , decided to go for 4y efi ( gwm motor with complete box etc...)
after thinking and thinking and thinking my reasons for not installing the v6 -
1 - to much can go wrong in my opinion
2 -this is not going to be a drag bakkie , weekender ...... occasional week trips dont realy need the power.
3 - 4y = reliable - milions of taxis so spares are available all over africa.
anyone know where to find these?

i found one complete with the computer for 8500 and will only pay in 3500 when trading my motor ( not to well , using 500ml oil every tank petrol)

That's basically it what George said... they are not true 4Y's, but knock offs/replicas, not built to the original tolerances and specs... for that matter you might just as well fit a Land Rover motor.

Why not have your 4Y rebuilt, or is it already a ching chong knock off?
Then you can just EFi it! I rebuilt my 4Y myself, it cost around 4.5K to do the job 100% properly... that motor was sweet till the day I sold the bakkie!

to redo motor and get parts for efi will cost allot more they are giving me 5000 for my motor and i have to pay in 3500 for the complete motor with efi

firstly i the efi will not have problems , i am putting the complete original unit in from the gwm bakkie. No aftermarket ecu's and stuff
i am looking for a reliable vehicle if i decide to do a long trip. If something realy oes wrong there will always be options available to fix it.
i drive mostly on weekends only this bakkie isn't built for speed anyway. the power available with low range is more than enough , we do not go extreme offroad and i am sure the 4y will go many places.

new problems , the ecu that came with the motor is stuffed.
starts and then dies , we changed it with another gwm ecu and it starts and idles.
where will i find a ecu , looked all over at the local scrapyards nobody has got?
Iam not paying 5k for a new one.
The number on the ecu - bosch motronic - 0 261 208 078 and 20.09.07
new problems , the ecu that came with the motor is stuffed.

ELectronics eish! Best of luck, at auto style they sell a Gotech ecu at around 1.5k n dictator at 2.2k (after market)

went on our first trip and realy feels good , the one injectors needs a clean and service.
got 5.9km/liter towing camping trailer. Another sfa also towing a trailer got 6.2. So I am happy so far with 5.9 with dirty/faulty injectors.
Could feel the that the efi motor had more power on 120-130 towing. At one stage i went 140 and there was more power left , with the 4y i could barely go 140 without towing.
We went to pelwana reserve near hoedspruit , so lots of mountain driving.
Will send injectors in next week and see what it does.

went on our first trip and realy feels good , the one injectors needs a clean and service.
got 5.9km/liter towing camping trailer. Another sfa also towing a trailer got 6.2. So I am happy so far with 5.9 with dirty/faulty injectors.
Could feel the that the efi motor had more power on 120-130 towing. At one stage i went 140 and there was more power left , with the 4y i could barely go 140 without towing.
We went to pelwana reserve near hoedspruit , so lots of mountain driving.
Will send injectors in next week and see what it does.
