3RZ Supercharger installed
So.... this morning i started with the supercharger install on the Hilux.....
. Removed the two part I/M and T/B... . I preassembled the S/C and I/M... . Slipped the S/C into place and bolted it down to the cyl head...
. Installed the idler pulley & bracket, nose carrier and belt...
. Installed the OE T/B, pipes and other hardware as needed...
. Still using OE map sensor, T off to FPR fom boost side of the S/C... (No CEL...)
. 3.5 hours later....... START-UP... Its very quiet at idle, almost like OE, till u stab the throttle!!! It squeals like a pig!
Installing Innovate LM1 just now to monitor AFR, and then off to RBTS on Tuesday morning to dyno tune the Uni-Q chip and boost module.....
AEM Water injection to follow soon...... injecting pre-S/C..

Re: 3RZ Supercharger installed
Yes i have George, went to work with it this morning, and now came home with it.......
Boost is at 6psi due to the altitude change from coast to JHB (5500ft above sea level, and it has an 8psi pulley installed). Even though it has not yet been tuned, its very different from this morning. The Lux has much more pep at the bottom and midrange, making it a pleasure to drive home, even untuned as it is now, and with 31"s on!
I left the std injectors and map sensor in place for now, & added a 255l/min fuel pump (recently done). Fitted my Innovate wideband AFR just now, and fuel mixtures are around 10 afr @ wideopen throttle under load....... very rich, but safe for now. Part throttle cruising is around 12afr, also rich. I plumbed the map sensor and fuel pressure regulator to "see" boost, hence the rich mixtures. This will all be sorted on Tuesday by RBTS Racing in Kempton Park, when the van goes for dyno (Uni-Q).
Overall i'm very happy with my purchase. The Charger is quiet internally, has no oil leaks, and looks factory fitted.
Will update with graphs on Wednesday : Std as it was, as it is now, and after the dyno tune........
Will have to upgrade the exhaust to 63mm system with header as well, as i suspect the std system thats still on the van, may be quite restrictive. The freeflow exhaust will also help boost build up, for the same reason.
CANT WAIT TILL TUESDAY!

Kostes beloop so R28500-00 nuut, sonder electronics....
Ek het R6700-00 vir die een betaal, tweede hands, en per ongeluk.....

So, the truck went to RBTS for the dyno this morning...
First run, the bypassvalve wasn't closing completely. added a return spring, and went back on the dyno...

.STD injectors
.STD mapsensor (No CEL)
.STD 54mm exhaust system
.STD throttlebody
.Uni-Q chip
.Walbro255 fuel pump
.Boost at 0.4 bar (5500ft above sealevel)
.No water/meth inj ......... yet.
.^^No type of intercooling ^^
.31"x15" tyres
Resulting in:
110wkw @ 5500rpm (0.4bar)
246.4nm @ 4000rpm (0.4bar)

Huge, especially when u driving it........ "feels" like a 4.0l 4 cyl.... hahahahaha torque everywhere. Will be much better once the waterinjection is installed and set up.

Re: 3RZ Supercharger installed
Jake, I have the following :
TRD Supercahrger with 5th injector (from what I read the 5th injector can be used for water injection or additional fuel injection)
Intake Manifold
New set of bigger injectors
Whole mounting kit (gaskets and brackets)
Boost sensor
Dastek chip
When I start doing mine I hope I can call on you for some advice, it has been sitting in the garage for about a year now and I am itching to install it.
What size is the pulley that is giving you 0.4 bar ?
Do you know where I can have pulleys made up?
What is the engine temps like with the SC?

110kw on the wheels! in JHB, Hoppy... up here at 5500ft, we are not as lucky as u guys down at the coast with ur nice thick/heavy air.....Hoppy wrote:110kw? aren't they supposed to push around 170kw with the s/c?
Roots type blowers, like these EATON ones used on the TRD kits, unfortunately suffer altitude problems, caused by no internal comp ratio, like Turbo's, centrifugal chargers and screw type chargers, that actually build boost pressure internally before exiting into the motor. We have about a 2 psi drop on these EATON chargers from coast to JHB, with the same dia drive pulleys (realtime).....
110kw(150HP) on the wheels up here, equates to around 155kw(210HP) at the flywheel. Also u must remember that i have 31" tyres on the Lux.... these things cause even more losses due to parasitic drag.....

Re: 3RZ Supercharger installed
AEM wmi installed today. Tank mounted inside loadbin, between the rollbars, controller on gear lever console, and pump under loadbin. Nozzle installed in intake duct before T/B. I have not yet checked system pressure when pump is operating. Using water only (no meth yet) i started off with the smallest nozzle (130cc/min). NO difference whatsoever, even when adjusting the pump pwm.Went up to next size nozzle (315cc/min). Set initial load to 0.5psi, and max load to 10psi.My "butt dyno" and the boost gauge, says there is a significant difference. The truck "feels" stronger low down to mid range, and it gets onto max boost (0.5bar) much sooner (2500rpm vs 3000rpm without wmi). (Boost used to hang around 0.4, and creep up to 0.5, at around 5500 rpm only). High rpm gains are difficult to "guesstimate" though. Whats more astonishing, is the amount the actual blower casing temperature changed by! With wmi off, the casing temp reaches almost 60degC after a run at WOT from 1st to 4th!!! With wmi on, the casing temp went down to 42degC, under the same conditions!!! Indirectly this means that intake temps dropped, and that my "liquid intercooler" works thus far. Dyno time, hopefully this week, will confirm.

Theoretically the fuel consumption should be improved due to more efficient combustion because of the increased compression and air / oxygen volume in relation to the fueling. The temptation to become heavy footed with the extra power is real and can lead to the loss of those benefits.

on one of or vehicles have done a few bolt on mods, full exhaust, inlet system, a programmer for the fuel injection, all things that do help the fuel consumption
however
it feels good and sounds so good that it has become very difficult not to enjoy
and fuel consumption is now out the window

Re: 3RZ Supercharger installed
Jake, you have had it on for a while now. Give some feedback.
How is it behaving?
What is the fuel consumption like?
Did the water injection reduce the heat the supercharger produces sufficiently?
I want to install mine next week. Do you know where I can get an aluminium pulley made up?

Re: 3RZ Supercharger installed
Sorry for the delay guys.... been helluva busy at work the past few weeks, and have not had much time to spend on my truck, or the forums.....
Fuel consumption is very similar to std, give or take a few points...... IF and only IF u drive it decently. This is very difficult though, as stated above, because with the S/C, the motor revs freely to the redline without u even noticing or in fact trying!!!!! i had to condition myself to actually "short shift" while driving... When u "accidently" drive like i described above.... fuel consumption is almost halved... :x Torque is everywhere though, even with my 31"s, and cruising on the highway and passing traffic has become a breeze.... unlike before where i actually had to time a passing manouvre succesfully, or remain where i was behind a truck or similar.......
The watermeth kit is installed, but only pumping straight H2O at the moment. Methanol to be added later.... Using it primarily to cool down the S/C internally ( no intercooler ) I had to go up to a 580cc wmi nozzle, to even start noticing a drop in temps. Injecting H2O before the S/C and throttle body. The AEM controller has a built in map sensor that senses the boost pressure. It is adjustable for start and duration. Its set up to activate the pump as soon as it sees any + pressure (boost), and then pulses the pump from slow to fast(max delivery) depending on the secondary controller setting. H20 consumption at the moment is around 4.5 Lit to a tank of fuel, depending on driving style obviously.
On Saturday i had some time, and went to Viper exhaust in Kempton. I purchased some 63mm mandrell bends, straight tubing, two silencers and a branch manifold. Went back to my shop, removed the teeny std exhaust system and started to manufacture my own "freeflow" system.... 3.5 hrs later i was done. i placed the rear silencer as far back as i could, as i hate a "blaring" exhaust.... this resulted in a nice subdued but deep exhaust tone.... just what i wanted.. The branch fitted with ample clearance around it.
At the same time, i replaced that damn "cone filter" induction with a HONDA sealed airbox and some silicone 76mm piping. This quitened down the S/C whine nicely, and got rid of the heat soak i had with the stainless steel intake tubing....
IF i get time this week, the truck will go back to the dyno, to tune the new exhaust, induction and watermeth all at the same time....

U can either visit me at the shop or gimme a call... i will gladly assist where i can.Bazzer wrote:Jake, you have had it on for a while now. Give some feedback.
How is it behaving?
What is the fuel consumption like?
Did the water injection reduce the heat the supercharger produces sufficiently?
I want to install mine next week. Do you know where I can get an aluminium pulley made up?
I can have pulleys made up no problem..
Thinking of having an overdriven crank pulley and P/S pulley made up, to increase boost a little for our altitude... mbe 20% increase. The blower rpm redline is 16000rpm, and with my current pulley setup, its now only at 9464rpm at engine limiter....
U have PM btw..

Have you had a chance to work on the overdriven crank pulley. Would you need to change the fuel delivery for the extra boost? How much additional boost do you think you can get before the p/s starts to take a hit with to many rpms? Can you let us know how it works out.Jxjdm wrote:U can either visit me at the shop or gimme a call... i will gladly assist where i can.Bazzer wrote:Jake, you have had it on for a while now. I am looking to get an LCE supercharger kit for my 4runner. I live in California and a turbo is not an option due to the California Air Resources Board. When i first looked into the option of the supercharger it looked like a good option until i was told by the guys at LCE that 8 psi is the is the smallest pulley they sell netting about 170~190 hp to the stock wheels. I was hoping for a bit more.
