The new Fortuner 2.5 Diesel
I recently bought the new 2.5 diesel Fortuner, and to say the least I am very impressed.
I had some extras fitted mostly being afforded by the big saving on offered over the 3.o liter's price.I have replaced the standard exhaust pipe with a 63mm free flow unit and then asked Sac to fit a new chip to it with remarkable results.
This was the first 2.5 diesel Fortuner they chipped and the performance specs exceeded that of a friends 3.0 lit Hi Lux fitted and tuned by Sac at the same time.
I did not opt to have the fortuner chipped as to gain better performance but to optimize on fuel consumption.I tested the Fortuner on the speedo-cruise set at speedo 120km/h (116km/h on the gps) and locked 14.5km/lit on a round trip to Witbank and back. I am regularly able to achieve this consumption which made it a worthwhile expenditure
The extras I had fitted are,Mitchellin tyres, tinting, radio with Gps and camera and leather seats.

Baie nice, veral die fuel consumption wat amper beter is as my ou Yaris wat ek gehad het!

What power increase did you get?
Is that 14.5km/l from the trip computer?

Re: The new Fortuner 2.5 Diesel
Jacques,
The consumption 14.5Lit/km are being measured by the pump upon actual distance (Speedo) traveled on tar road with 3 persons on board, air-con on, cruise control on tyre pressure at 2.0psi
Kw increase at 1500rpm 17.4kw, Kw increase at 2500rpm 28.4kw, Kw increase at 3500rpm 25.9kw
Kw increase at 2000rpm 22.8kw, Kw increase at 3000rpm 25.5kw, Kw increase at 4000rpm 22.8kw all measured on the rear wheels.
Nm increase at 1500rpm 132.9nm, Nm increase at 2500rpm 130.2nm, Nm increase at 3500rpm 84.8nm
Nm increase at 2000rpm 130.6nm, Nm increase at 3000rpm 97.4nm, Nm increase at 4000rpm 65.4nm all measured on the rear wheels.
the best Kw reading was at 3000 rpm with 107kw and at 2000rpm 465.0NM on the rear weels.

Ernest, that is brilliant result.
Toyota could have doubled their sales of Fortuners if they had started with the 2.5 from the word go.

Re: The new Fortuner 2.5 Diesel
Are you sure that NM reading is on the wheels? That will then be well over 500Nm on the flywheel if you take drivetrain losses into account! Cannot see how that can be possible :DOu Poot wrote:Jacques,

Re: The new Fortuner 2.5 Diesel
The 2.5 Fortuner has a different version of the 2KD-FTV motor than is used in the 2.5 Hilux. The Fortuner version has a variable nozzle turbocharger (apparently the Hilux will be getting the same motor some time in the near future).
The Fortuner's 2KD-FTV (VNT) has the following outputs:
106 kW @ 3400 rpm
343 Nm @ 1600-2800 rpm
...compared to the Hilux version which has these:
75 kW @ 3600 rpm
260 Nm @ 1600-2400 rpm
So you can see that the Fortuner has a good 41% more power and 32% more torque. The Fortuner also has a broader high-torque band. It also runs on 265/65 R17 rubber and not on those little 205/R16s...
For interest sake, the 1KD-FTV in the 3.0 D4D Fortuner has the following outputs:
120 kW @ 3400 rpm
343 Nm @ 1400-3200 rpm
...so the 2.5 version actually has the same peak torque (albeit in a narrower band - hence the lower peak power output).
The 2.5 Fortuner won't tow quite like a 3.0 D4D, but will probably be in a whole different league to the 2.5 Hilux. It might just be what you need.
I have not found published power and torque curves for the three engines (2KD-FTV VNT, 2KD-FTV and 1KD-FTV), so I constructed these approximate curves from the published figures (i.e. the two engine speed/torque coordinates at the edges of the torque plateau and the speed/torque coordinate at maximum power). They should give an idea of where the relative performance of the motors would lie
The really important one as far as the real world drivability and towing ability is concerned, is the torque curve comparison (not only the peak value, but also the shape of the curve). As can be seen, the 2.5 VNT motor is much closer to the 3.0 motor than to the 2.5 Hilux motor.

Re: The new Fortuner 2.5 Diesel
Another interesting point to note is that, according to ToyoDIY, the 2.5 D4D Fortuner actually runs a deeper final drive ratio than the 3.0 D4D (3.909 vs 3.583), so the startability will be better when towing with the 2.5 than the 3.0! The 3.0 will ultimately be able to tow at higher speed, but that is hardly of consequence given the realities of towing safety.
Here are the approximate cascade curves (curves showing tractive effort in each gear) for the two. The 2.5 curves are the blue ones and the 3.0 curves are the red ones; each successive lower curve is for a higher gear.
The dotted lines are constant power hyperbolae for the two vehicles respectively. With a continuously variable transmission (e.g. hydrostatic drive or belt drive CVT) the tractive effort curve would lie on such a hyperbola.

Gerrit, welcome, wish that motor was in the hilux, then I could live with it. That 2.5 in the hilux is good for a workhorse but overtaking is night mare, not enough horses.

Re: The new Fortuner 2.5 Diesel
Johan, rumour has it that the launch of the 2.5 VNT motor in the Hilux is imminent (either this month or next). It was supposed to be launched at the same time as the automatic version of the 2.5 Fortuner and I saw a TV ad for that one last night...

Dankie vir die goeie info Gerrit, ek is huidiglik in die proses om 'n 2.5 Fortuner te koop.
Ek sien ook die sterker enjin kom net in die dubbelkajuit uit.

Re: The new Fortuner 2.5 Diesel
