Spare wheel
Hi all ,I wanted to build a swing arm for my spare wheel and wanted to fit it to a standard bumper,so this is what i came up with.
It can be done for around R500-00 and some great friends.thanks to those, you know who you are.Cheers
First press fitted two 50mm long bushes into the two tubes,M12 thread in bushes.
I then made up a simple bracket to fit the bearing housing too.
Next was to measure the tubing to make sure the tyre sat in right pos.
Then followed the welding..........
I then fitted it to the bumper to make final adjustments.
Now all thats left to do is the latch system and final paint.I will post pics when completed(hope before Dec, )It can be done for around R500-00 and some great friends.thanks to those, you know who you are.Cheers

Great work!!! Do you have any ideas regarding the latch yet? If not, maybe this could help. Instead of using a latch on my own carrier, I manufactured a bracket that the carrier slides into and is then held in place with a spring pin. Very basic and inexpensive. Here are some pics...

Re: Spare wheel
Neat and simple Neil!
Your design looks like it will be reasonably sturdy against sideways flex, but you may need some reinforcement to prevent front to back flexing. The two bumper tubes should perhaps be tacked together at the end, the bearing mounting bracket gusseted top, middle (between the bolts) and bottom. Then there might still be some back / forward flexing of the bracket itself between the bearing and the wheel mount.
The other issue that you might want to consider is an 'open position' stop and lock so that if you're on a slope the arm doesn't swing right around and klap the side of the rear fender, or interfere (swing closed) while you are busy in the back with the canopy lid open.
But looking good!

Did you tack the two bumper tubes together? No back / forward flex? ... (A nice corrugated gravel road should be a good test).

I did not think of tacking the tubes together, rode on a corrugated road this past weekend,no movement seen,i still want to put in some extra ribs below bearing housing, just for some extra strength.Mud Dog wrote:Did you tack the two bumper tubes together? How did you make the spindle that the tyre swings on.
Is it a perfect fit with no play at all?

Re: Spare wheel
How did you make the spindle that the tyre swings on.it is turned from one bullet of steel, there is a shaft onto which the arm fits.
Is it a perfect fit with no play at all?there are two bearings in the arm housing, one at the top and one at the bottom.
Does it have a grease nipple?no,they are sealed bearings.

Re: Spare wheel
Love the idea, simple, effective and not expensive. I would however move the number plate to the left side of the bumper. You could also add some LED lights either side of the number plate to make everything legal. SAPD is a bunch of buggers...
