I have owned only Toyota so really can't write anything here about that.

My dad used to own a 1991 2.5 VW Caravelle bus. Bought it brand new when they came out. Owned it for 16 months of which it spent 11 months in at garage for various repairs. :o:

Vw eventually had to buy it back and he bought 2x Toyota's, 1600 Corolla & 1600 Conquest Sport in the place of that vehicle.

SO no matter how good their marketing is, I will not but that product, as from experience in the family they always gave our family poor service & reliability.

My very first vehicle ... A 1968 Renault R10 ..... bought it myself with money I had managed to save working holiday jobs during my schooling. Seemed to spend more time working on it than driving it, so from that aspect, perhaps it was one of the best because I learned a lot by having to fix things myself.

Looked very similar to the one in the pic, except it had an air-dam with front air-scoop (radiator had been moved to the front), flared wheel arches with wide takkies and mags, but without the 'racing stripes'. Really looked the part, and the 1600 Alconi motor wasn't too bad on performance for those days. Don't think I have a single pic of it.

Opel kadet cub (My first car).
And then few years later Opel corsa pickup.

Both of these gave me endless problems. The kadet was an old piece of junk. The corsa bakkie was sold at only 30000km.

Will never touch an opel in my life again!!

I have had a Datsun Pulsar 1400, Renault 5 GT, VW Chico, VW Life all good cars. My Fortuner is my first Toyota, so if it's half as good as you guy say Toyota is, then I think I'm going to be very happy.

I can't agree more!! Had a 2001 model. Motor blew 1000km out of motorplan. Took 3 months to fix  . Had it a week and the motor blew again   . Back for 3 weeks. Got it and had it a DAY, same story    ! R40k down the drain.

3000 km out of motorplan aircon went - R12k. 2000km later diff went - R20k :alvarin: . Then the gearbox started whininng and I sold it immediatly.

Where to start.....

1. 1985 CITI Golf 1.3 Carb 4spd, clutch burnt out, starter gone, roof leaked.
2. 2004 CITI Golf 1.4i, not bad, very heavy on the petrol. and then one day a BMW 5 series turned into me
3. don't know the year, CITI 1.1 carb 4spd this was the worst by far. . so many problems
4. 1997 CITI 1.6 carb 5spd. had it for 2 months replaced the rear tires 3 times and it burned out!
5. don't know the year, got it, and got rid of it.

Did motor a few times.

the blerry nut on top of the carb kept coming loose and falling into the carb!!!

Apparently it was a common problem.

Had many vw's, much more of a drivers car than any Toyota, Toyota must stick to bakkies, i had about 20 golfs, jetta's, bugs, beetles,old Kombi's and 7 Microwaves, they gave good service and were cheap and easy to repair(except the boxer motors, i converted them all), my worst cars would be;
1 Mini
2 Opel Kadet
3 Chev Beuville Van
4 Toyota Tazz 1.3
5 Alfa 1750 GT Junior
6 Nissan 1400 ldv

Best car ever, even beats all the Hiluxes: Peugeot 404, just could not break it.

Worst car I ever drove, Toyota Camry, but the bugger NEVER gave problems and I tried to break it, was good on fuel etc. but oh so boring.
Reliability is for old ladies :banned:

Worst car in terms of breakages?
I've had a lot of Alfa's and if you do not worry about the rust, the brakes, the electrics and the crap rear gearbox it's actually a very reliable car. :naah:

But a Mini was the the worst, but boy it went well around the block until something fell off again.

I was so glad when it was eventually sold.

I think the worst car I owned was a golf 4 GTi. But i do miss the performance. And I hate to say it but the other worst was my wifes Verso. The engine was terrible, noisy and not enough power for the size of the vehicle so you ended up burning the clutch to pieces and parts were expensive. Pity because it was quite a versitile vehicle.

Like my signature says, toyota fan all the way.
I strive to only buy toyota's but i fear pretty soon financially the overpriced nature of the brand will lead me to look elsewhere.
I had a 1991 / 1992 2.0 GTI for about 2 months. bought the car as everyday vehicle, as the 2.2 lux was killing me with petrol... turned out to be heavier than the 2.2 due largely to the lovely baratone notes produced by it's air filter - something which i have never been able to achieve with any toyota - been told you can, and tried all sort of tricks, still no luck... swapped it for twincam and was happy again.

But the worst car i ever drove was not mine but my dads. Mitsubishi Tredia :wth: Was the weirdest looking car.
It was my first car and it embarrassed me endlessly. Not only did it look like a UFO, but rings were shot and clutch was slipping. And as my first car to varsity ... ah well

Eventually dad pulled out the motor, we did the rings and clutch, and then when i had to take it for test drive, nobody told me to keep the revs low. So first drive around the block i'm redlining this poor little engine - needless to say it started smoking soon again :(

Anyhow, i bought me my first car - the RSI. Bought it with faulty starter, and for week or so, had to park on inclines or boys had to push, but we didn't care - it was an RSI :yahoo:
Tredia stood infront of the house, piece of metal fell on the windscreen cracked and she got pulled into the courtyard. There she wasted away, till vagrants started to live in it... can you believe it, behind a locked gate !! Soon they almost burnt it out, then my dad decides to sell it...

FYI, the tredia came with a second gear lever - just like a 4x4 :D: This was an overdrive type thing - not sure what it did, if it had in effect 8 gears, but it did work , going uphill with dodgy clutch.

Besides the rings and clutch though i could not fault it. Did not throw me away once, and put up with my verbal and physical abuse and simply soldiered on - up until the day i cast her aside for a sleeker , faster, fuel injected, single gear lever model :D:

Very interesting, Shaakir. I had not heard of that before.
The Super Shift gearbox was developed from a standard four-speed manual transmission for use in the first generation Mitsubishi Mirage, the company's first front wheel drive model. As the transmission was mounted beneath the engine, the gearbox needed to take power down from the clutch. It was not possible to do this directly as this would have meant that the gearbox rotated in the opposite direction to that required, and therefore the use of an extra 'idle' shaft was required. It was subsequently realised that this shaft could be modified as a separate 2-speed gearbox, which would be controlled by a secondary shift lever mounted alongside the main gear shift lever inside the cabin.
This resulted in a transmission with a typical 4 speed 'H' pattern shift mechanism, plus an additional 2 speed 'high-low' selector. This meant 8 forward gears in total. It was also possible to use the 2 speed selector in reverse, meaning that two reverse gears also existed. In the majority of cars, the 2 speed selector was labelled as 'Power' for the lower range, and 'Economy' for the higher range. A dashboard light system was used to indicate which mode was selected.
In practice, it was very difficult to use all 8 forward speeds in sequence as every second change required movement of both gear levers at the same time - this was almost impossible without using both hands. Many owners settled on using the transmission in low 'Power' mode the majority of the time, and only using the secondary selector to select high 'Economy' mode when in 4th gear, effectively creating a 5th gear from 4th 'high'.
Production of the Super Shift transmission ended in 1990 with the discontinuation of the Tredia and Cordia series of vehicles.

Ha Ha they could do 70km/h on a 40% downhill with a tailwind if you pray hard enough!
The 2.25 petrol used more fuel than a Bedford truck and was myabe 20km/h faster.
We had the whole Landrover range in the SADF that we had to maintain, i was totaly cured of LR Fever before i left the force, i can not recall a single moment that one impressed me, i wil never go that low, that why another british failure tops my list.

Fiat Uno 1100. The most boring, personality-less, ugly, slow deathtrap of a car. Cheap to run though
Happy trails
