2year project
Hi all...I have a 2year project that i would like to start late next year(i know its long from now but dont wana run through too many hick-ups)...
I plan on building a double cab SFA hillux with the following specs
>fibre glass body
>land cruiser diffs(will this fit)
>d4d engin/fordv6 (which would be better)
>ome suspension
>33"
>and of corse the usual bla bla bla...
building it for fishing and the odd camping trip with the brothers;
now my querie is...would the land cruiser diffs work,or will there be problems, does the fibre glass body have mountings on the body or does the engin mount straight onto the chassy....i also wana rubberise the interior and place carpeting over it.linnings and so forth...last but not least>>>>has any1 done this kinda thing before(diffs and d4d in SFA)and what was the outcome...I'm not gonna rush this project, want every thing to go as smooth as posible...

Re: 2year project
Why do you want to use Cruiser diffs if you are going to use the vehicle for fishing and trips.?
The cruiser diffs are wider, so you will have to fit fender flares or else the wheels are going to sit outside the body.
If you are going to fit a fibreglass body the vehicle will be very light.Personally I will stick with a old trusty 4y.
The D4D are going to set you back +/- R 30 - 35K, and the Ford thing doesn't do it for me.(Sorry Thys )
The engine mounts onto the chassis so you don't have to worry about the fibreglass body.
Good luck with the project, and remember to keep the pictures coming.

Re: 2year project
Just watch the fibre glass body. We did a conversion for a client on a Suzuki. Well we were told it all just bolts together. *a*! +-100hrs later yes it did! And that at R20K for the skeleton shell. The doors never sealed properly, the windows never wound up properly either as the glass fibre doors were made so bad. The frames had to be cut, the windows set in the frames and then glass fibred to put it back together. Then they didnt match the body.... Stay away from the fibre glass thing unless someone is prepared to vouch for the body!!!
Stick with the 4y...

Spoke to Steve(think that was his name) from Mboza...He say's the bodie are all straight and fit in snug...thought about that point of the windows not winding...will have to go and have a look at the quality and workmanship of the replicas...>yourll sure about the 4y....wanted abit if muscle under the hood... 30-35k for the d4d...yieks :wth: :!: :!: rather not then hey...thaught the cruiser diffs would be better...but its cool, standard is king...lol...thanks manne.
oh and while we on the topic of 4Y>my present 4Y,after 3000rpm just makes noise, wont pull or continue the increase of power(even if its slight)just kills the gas...is that due to the carb not opening its second stage, cant think of anything else...just repaced the timing chain and jets in the carb...HELP

Galvanize the chassis!
Ford V6 is still the cheapest R/kw you can get!

Re: 2year project
hi manne,I met a guy yesterday with the hillux fibre galss body that had been purchased 13years ago...the body looks really really sweet, pin straight, with no defaults, the windows wind up perfectly, the doors close with ease, the tail gate is solid and so is the body. The make up of the body is not like a beach buggy. The owner(dave)had rolled the vehicle about 4years back, and steve from Mboza repaired it,there is no sign of accident damage at all.The engin bay is identicall as the original bakkie.
Now my decision is do I put a 4y or a 2.8tdi ltd engin in...need help here too...

Re: 2year project
Shuaib I am planning on keeping the 4Y with an EFI conversion, don’t feel like all the hassles in doing a conversion, I want to rather stick with a strong reliable 4Y engine and the extra money I will spend doing the conversion would rather save for a holiday even if it takes a bit longer to get there……… maby at a later stage i will do a conversion.
Steve should start with my body in the next 2 weeks so you can see how it comes out

Re: 2year project
cant comment on the fiber glass body, however can comment on the motor issue!!
agree Ford V6 best Rand/Kw
and the Ford V6, easiest conversion possible!! no EFI, and wiring and pumps, and all items for the conversion available off the shelf!!
the Ford V6 will be lighter on Fuel the any 4 Pot motor
and if extra power is needed then maybe a 8 will be in order, like a Lexus V8
and so just by the way, a well set up Lexus V8 is lighter on fuel the a V6 and way more fun!!
not knocking the 7MGE
enjoy, and keep us posted!! should make for interesting read!!
