I Have got the Canon 50D and I am very happy with it. I have had many cameras over the years as photography is a hobby of mine. It may be bigger but at the end of the day you want good quality pics that are going to record your memories for ever. IMHO I would get an SLR, once you have used it you wont look back and you can get lenses for all applications.

Between us we have a 30D, a 5D, a 1D, and my trusty old Minolta film camera that still kicks ass, won't be able to go back again, it takes a lot of space, but worth the effort.

Also have an old Minolta film camera with an assortment of lenses and filters .... not worth selling because you get nothing for them nowadays (cost me upwards of 10k many years ago), but it's too much schlep to use.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I, too, have a Minolta 35mm SLR from donkey's year ago, and then a Sony Cybershot from around 1998 and a Panasonic FZ5 from about 5 years ago. All snapping their way merrily!

I take my films to the Kodak shop, they develop the film and put it onto a cd, it's much cheaper than printing and you won't believe the quality, still better than digital.

Celluloid will in theory always be better than digital (with equivalent lens quality) because of three basic factors .... pixelation which you dont get with celluloid, quality of the digital CCD unit (captures the image) and the size of the CCD unit by comparison to a celluloid frame. If you have a 100k plus to toss about and you have an old Hasselblat or Roliflex with Zeiss lenses (they used the old 120 size film) you could fit a full frame CCD ... then you would get images that can compare with film. However the only time you would need it is for studio work to create crisp life size prints ... the eye wouldn't be able to see differences between film and decent digital equip in snapshot sizes.

Cost of developing and putting 36 pics on CD R45.00, cost of film R 35.00, R2.22 per pic, not so bad!
That's at Kodak express, might be cheaper if you have time to shop around

No, not too bad ... but with digital you can do it all yourself so much easier, and the only cost is only a CD or DVD disc that can hold a few hundred pics in full resolution ..... used to burn all the stuff to CD before, but with removable drives it no longer makes sense ... now just store it on an external drive. Most modern day AV equipment has a USB port and is able to interface with the drive, making it even more practical. Doubt I will ever go back to celluloid media.

Self have the Cybershot DSC1920; no real optical zoom to talk about, but fits nicely in a pocket (shirt or baggies) and the close range shots are relatively good quality. Tend to get the red as well with pics taken in low light conditions.
One is one day when I'll get a Canon SLR....not ball & powder type though...

But YES - EXCELLENT service !!
Bought a new flash last week. After the whole sales discussion, a demo flash and camera was used to give me a FULL course in using the unit ! Went back the next day with some pics, had a nice discussion and got some more technical info on how to use the flash, settings etc.
already got a price on my current 500D for the "possible" upgrade that might just "possibly" happen in two months time ....... :)
The 5D Canon is marked DOWN now (with the new model looming). So you can reaaly get a TOP camera for 10k less than a few weeks back. :)
ps- it might not fit in your pocket though, but then easy enough to fit bigger pockets .... :)
Tx Chris....'big camera make big hole in little pocket'....or something like that!
