D4D 3.0 to replace KZ-TE 3.0 in Double cab
My 2000 3.0 KZ-TE on 200 000km just now blew the cylinder head gasket. Estimate repair costs received were between R13k to R18k without the engine open which may increase the quotes. I also heard that after such repairs the engine start to use oil and other components like turbo, oil pump etc most probably will also need to be replaced on the 10+ year old engine at a later stage which make the repair not looking very economical.
I am thinking to seek a good second hand low mileage 3.0 D4D (Complete engine, gearbox, EMU and harness) from a write-off insurance claim which apparently can be bought for less than R40k and to have it installed in my 2000 model D/C.
Do anybody know if such a conversion has been done, where I can find more information and contact details, any complications/difficulties and expected outcome

Hallo Herman,

Maak hom reg. Ek het myne reg gemaak, en hy gebruik nie olie nie, sy turbo is nog reg na 9000km en hy trek soos nooit te vore nie.

Re: D4D 3.0 to replace KZ-TE 3.0 in Double cab
Get Fana to make you a belhousing and fit a D4D, its a far better motor and way better fuel consumption that the Kzte. It can definitly be done, otherwise fit a lexus. I have often thought of fitting a lexus to the Kzte as the gearing is perfect for that moto and I think the fuel economy will be pretty good as well.

Hallo Gunta
Yes very attractive options
The fitment of the D4D drivetrain will be relative easy but the electronics we see as the challange.
Any idea of somebody that did such an conversion or that can be recommended for the eletronic/ wiring part?

Re: D4D 3.0 to replace KZ-TE 3.0 in Double cab
Depends on if you are using the original ECU or going aftermarket. Personally I would go with the original. Any auto elec would be able to tie in the ecu into your harness with ease. I had mine done and it cost me 2k otherwise you are going to spend 5k going aftermarket.

Re: D4D 3.0 to replace KZ-TE 3.0 in Double cab
Hallo Mark
Thanks for the advice.
No I want to use the Toyota D4D and not any aftermarket system.
I saw on your profile you have a 1995 DC with accessories.
Did you do the D4D into this vehicle?
What is your overall feeling, like fuel consumption, power, ease of the conversion?
Didn't you run into problems with the D4D being a bit higher and the intercooler on top of the D4D a problem in your vehicle?
Did you also install the scoop on your vehicle for the intercooler?
Thanks for the advice.

Herman,
Mark has the 7MGE motor in his 'lux - the old 3 litre Cressida motor - But it is still a very nice truck!
AFAIK no-one on this forum has put a D4D into anything???

Re: D4D 3.0 to replace KZ-TE 3.0 in Double cab
Hallo Thabo
Yes I think you are correct as the communications are all around the D4D, everybody believes it will be a super conversion but I can't find somebody that has attempted it up to date.
I have registered this post on the Land Cruiser and Mud forums, who knows maybe I do find somebody that can give some guidance.
However if not I may repair the KZ-TE as cheap as possible, seek a good D4D drivetrain with all bells and whistles and then remove the KZ-TE engine and sell it off and start the D4D swab.

Re: D4D 3.0 to replace KZ-TE 3.0 in Double cab
There is no way that a engine swap would be cheaper than a proper repair!
And think of resale value - will you buy a vehicle with a different motor in? I would not easily part with my money for a conversion, unless it has been proven before.

Re: D4D 3.0 to replace KZ-TE 3.0 in Double cab
You are correct. An conversion swab-out will cost between R45-50K and the resell of KZ-TE drive train R10-15K. Meaning that it will cost on the long run between R35 - 40K but then you have a relative new motor, much better power and fuel consumption.
My 2000 KZ-TE body is in an excellent condition and if I have to buy a new/later model DC will I again have a lot of debt.
My idea is not to convert and to sell but rather to upgrade and keep enjoying the same vehicle.
I also think if I want to sell somewhere in the future the person buying the vehicle will also have done their own homework and will have to compare prizes to what is available.

I dont think you will have a problem selling it with a D4D. I would do the swap if I were in your position.

I would deffinately fit the D4D, as I understand you dont even need to swap bellhousing as the KZ, KN and KD engines share the same bellhousing.
Maybe you would have to mount a scoop on the bonnet
Go for it

I guess you mean ECU. You can normally get one at the scrap yards with the engine.

Re: D4D 3.0 to replace KZ-TE 3.0 in Double cab
ECU.
Yo have it tied into your normal vehicle electronics which is the problem.
Aftermarket petrol ECU's is not any problem but with diesel you have to use the manufacturer's EC.
I even heard that the ECU can control ABS etc and the old ABS and what is installed in the D4D isn't the same.
I am just scarred to purchase the D4D have it installed and then not be able to get the engine to fire and talk to all other electronics in the vehicle.
I can't get anybody on any forum that installed a D4D but many installed petrol engines etc.

Herman, get the KZ fixed up. Allan Venter has been talking about fitting a D4D into a SFA for a while, but the engine remains too expensive for it to be a viable option!

William phone Japan auto 011 397 6789 and get a complete motor from them. You will have to try and source a wiring harness and management system from a scrap yard and then buy a bellhousing from toyota and the get a mechi to fit it for you.

Good day. My 3.0kzte double cab 2×2 fills the coolingwater reservoir up with water after 2 hrs drive and overheats. I changed the radiator, thermostat and waterpump with new. It's still doing the same. What else can I do. 385000kms.

Re: D4D 3.0 to replace KZ-TE 3.0 in Double cab
Typical symptoms of a cracked cylinder head. Buy a new, bare head at Alert Engine Parts, have the cam and valves build over to the new head, get a TOYOTA headgasket and a 74 degree thermostat. And all the usuals like timing belt, tensioner, waterpump, etc.AlfredMichael wrote: ↑Tue Feb 15, 2022 11:07 am Good day. Also, very important, have the radiator chemically cleaned and tested for flow rate.
Do it proper, then you only do it once.
