Do I EFI my 4Y or do I go the Lexus route??

Post by Agteros »

I have to make the following decision:

1. Do I EFI my 4Y - this can be done by Louis Zanoli at 4x4 Megaworld Menlyn for around R13000. It will push up power slightly and improve driveability and maintain the reliability - but this is not an "exciting" option (although maybe the sensible one).

2. Go the Lexus V8 route - I received the following quotes - R55000 for the 1UZ - R70000 for the 2UZ and R80000 for the 3UZ. This is potentially a "very exciting" option but has the potential to turn into a "mine field". I have read horror stories (and a couple of good ones) on this conversion but my main problem is - who can be trusted to do this conversion above all doubt??

Hugo,

You have allready answered your question. The EFI route is the way to go if you are doing lots of remote overland travel. I do not say that the UZ conversions are unreliable, but many have been done and few are actually really running 100% without any problems.

SO its horses for courses. If you are willing to sort all the "teething" problems out over time the Lexus might be a good option if you are power hungry. But remember that you will need to do a lot of upgrades to the brakes ect of the vehicle if you go that route, so 70 K might end up being closer to 90K and that is a lot of dough to spend for more power and same fuel consumption.

You can speak to BlumTRD here on the forum. He did a lexus conversion on his 2.7 and as far as i know he is very happy. There is a place in pretoria where you can get the I think 1urz engine, box and original management system for less than 10k.

If your lux is in good nick and you got the bucks... go Lexus... remember you are probably going to break things in the drive train over time, but well that's the cost of owning a power monster! Speak to PersKers, Spartan, RedHummer, ConversionMan(Fana) on the forum, they are all very knowledgable on engine conversions, and know who can do it properly...

Thanks Guys for all your responses so far.......

Thanks Mr B for all the names (I have spoken to Redhummer last week - he said he will get back to me).

Tiaan, Quintin - seems you guys are very happy but acknowledge the teething problems - my biggest problem (if I decide to go ahead with the conversion) is to find the right man to do the job

Kom ry my Efi.

Johan se Lexus staan weer by my met 'n clutch probleem(ingesit deur ander instansie).

:boss:

Beloer die webwerf en kom kuier: http://www.lexusv8conversions.co.za/w-l ... isplay.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So voel vry kom ry my bakkie met 'n conversion in en dan maak jy 'n besluit.

Groete

HI Guys

Followed the discussion of the EFI vs LExus on the 4y 2.2. Visited Louis saw his conversion. I am interested in doing the EFI conversion - but want to go the DIY route. Do you have any suggestions on where to find parts.
