Re: Hilux mod
Luke, before deciding on that I'd first ask myself two questions:
- What is the reason/goal for the modification?
- Can I ever recover the money invested into the program?
After I have seen the malody some people have had with mechanical conversions I am very afraid to go down that road.

Re: Hilux mod
yes Luke, coils will work great, but there are very few such conversions that I know of so you'll be virtually breaking "new ground". Rather get the engine conversion sorted out 100% first before tackling additional projects, as this will lead to further frustrations.
As far as re-couping expenses when doing conversions, that will never happen, at least not in a financial Rands and Cents kind of way. The reward lies in the uniqueness of each conversion. I know it sounds nuts, but that's the way it is..

If i do decide to keep her the 7m will be the first thing to go,iv'e dream t about a v8 few a good many years and a few guys i know down here are running 5.0l hemis and ford 352s.Simple and cheap especially the 350 chev motors cheaper than the 7mge to rebuild actually. But first before any rebuild happens i must count the cost, not rands and cents but time and emotional strain, will let you okes know as the time draws near

Re: Hilux mod
Well heres an update of what im up to,in the past few weeks iv'e picked up a v8 engine and began stripping it,its a 1957 318 5.2 with hemi heads,i picked it up for a song too, although it will need some work.Alot of work actually ia 150% rebuild to be perfectly honest, but i hear these engines are very very strong!forged steel crank and blocks
being carved from a solid iron pig.Stripping of the bakkie will take place as soon as i get time to sort my workshop
and make it waterproof. Then its a full strip of the chassis and suspension change,i think Defender 110 suspension
trailing arms etc will be the most simple.Anyway any input is most welcome.
Ive got pics just cant upload them,no gigs so will post them next month.

Re: Hilux mod
Luke the 318 is definitely a 5.2l very good engine. Does not make sense with the bore and stroke. Where did you get them, and are you sure it's a 318?
I might have a manual somewhere, will have to look in the archives. Been a while sice I worked on one of those.

Chrysler A engine
The Chrysler A engine is a small-block V8 automobile engine from Chrysler Corporation. It was produced from 1956 until 1967, when it was replaced by the wedge-head LA engine. The A engine's combustion chambers are polyspherical, and it is not related to Chrysler's Hemi engine of the same era.
Hide Plymouth Poly A
The A-block family began with the 1956 Plymouth 277. The cylinder's bore centers are 4.46 in (113.28 mm) apart, a larger separation distance than was used in the earlier Dodge-based poly engines.
277
The 277 was the first A-block engine, sharing almost nothing but the basic concepts with the Dodge engines. It displaces 276.1 cu in (4.52 L) and was produced for 1956. Bore is 3.750 in (95.25 mm) and stroke is 3.125 in (79.38 mm).
303
The 1956 Plymouth 303 displaces 302.3 cu in (4.95 L) and uses the same Connecting rods as the 277; the bore is 3.8125 in (96.84 mm) and the stroke is 3.31 in (84.07 mm).
This engine was used in the following vehicles:
1956 Dodge Custom Royal (Canadian)
1956 Chrysler Windsor (Canadian)
1956 Plymouth Fury, 240 bhp (179.0 kW) with 4-barrel carburetor
1957 standard on all 118 in-wheelbase Dodges and Plymouths
301
The Plymouth 301 replaced the 277 in 1957. Its piston displacement is 299.6 cu in (4.9 L), owing to its 3.91 in (99.31 mm) bore. These dimensions are entirely different from the 1955 Chrysler 301.
313
A 312.3 cu in (5.1 L) version of the A engine called the 313 was produced primarily for Canadian and export markets. This engine has a bore of 3.875 in (98.43 mm) and the common 3.31 in (84.07 mm) stroke.
This engine was used in the following vehicles, amongst others:
1957 Canadian Dodge Custom Royal
1958-1964 standard on all 118 in wheelbase Dodges and Plymouths
1957-1964 Australian Chrysler Royal
Bristol 407
Bristol 408
318
The 318 is the most common version of the A engine, produced from 1957 through 1967 when it was replaced in all markets by the LA 318. Only Plymouth used this 318 in 1957 and 1958, but it was shared with the other Chrysler divisions from 1959 on. It displaces 318 cu in (5.21 L) and has a 3.91 in (99.31 mm) bore and the 3.31 in (84.07 mm) stroke.
A special 1957-'58 version used two four-barrel carburetors to produce 290 bhp (216.3 kW), making it the highest-output A engine. It was used in the 1957 and 1958 Plymouth Fury, but was also an option on "lesser" Plymouth models. The Bristol 409 and 410 continued to use this engine until 1969.

Pampoen, saw your post on allpar, small world!!
on the pool acid, yes have seen that being used before, on engine parts!!
however used pool acid to clean some rust on my traylor, YES is removed the rust, however by night time the rust had started to form again!!
my advice would be if you are using pool acid, is to oil the part as soon as the rust is gone, either wise it might just start forming again!!
me think the pool acid strips the metal bare, including removing all rust, however it also leaves it exposed with out any other protection!!
good luck!!

Re: Hilux mod
Pool acid is far from ideal ..... It's hydrochloric, and Chlorine is in itself corrosive, hence the immediate re-appearance of rust. Sulphuric acid might be better, but I would think that Phosphoric acid would perhaps be the best option since it would probably leave a surface layer of iron phosphate (black) which neutralises / inhibits rust.
However, don't take my word on it and rather check with the guys that do it professionally. The other issue is what rate of dilution should be used so that it doesn't eat away at the metal.

Interesting, but like they say, it's highly corrosive. Nonetheless it seems as if it's used for de-scaling. Re: Hilux mod
Hi guys tommorow i buy my v8!! a 305 chevrolet with a turbo 350 box, does anyone know if they make an adaptor from the autobox to low ratio 4x4 box ? ive sorted all my rusted holes out by putting NS1 Rust Buster followed by two coats of red oxide, then i rivit an aliminium plate on either side and fiberglass the whole area.An old panelbeater said to me you keep the heat down and you dont have any flex plus the metal will always want to rust where you welded.so i guess time will tell.
