Rawsonville Tierkloof - Jan 2011
What a lekker day! Almost everybody arrived at the meeting point on time, the guys who were late will have to make amends in some way still to be determined by the rest of the group. In their defence I must say they were no more than about 4 minutes late. The drive to Rawsonville was not without any incidents either, Ciske had a "overheating" scare, turned out he was the one overheating, not the 4Y. In the process he picked up some stranded passengers to give them a lift to R-ville. That was his good deed for the day done. Or so we thought..
Once we arrived at Tierkloof, Stuart and Boetie had coffee water boiling, and the (by now) FAMOUS bacon sarmies were waiting for us. They were fantastic Stuart, did the Naked Chef teach you how to make them? We owe you big time.
The trail itself was great, much more washed out than the last 2 times we were there, and the rock steps going up seems to be getting more and more challenging every time. Unfortunately they had a big veld fire about a month ago, so there was not a tree/bush/shrub/tuft of grass anywhere in sight to provide any shade. It was vrekhot.
Stuart had a radiator related malfunction with a hose clamp that came loose, but we got that under control quick-sticks. The new guys, and the not so new ones performed brilliantly and hardly ever put a wheel wrong. Once we reached the top, the long downhill started, and Ciske us some music on the radios. Teary country music, and I think it was Tertius who was threatening to go over the cliff. In the mean time we were all sweating, and dodging blackened branches, but we made it to the bottom in one piece.
At Diepkloof the guys had a little play, and Johannes showed us exactly how an OME suspension should work. He also showed us how absorbent those Safari Seat Covers really are, but he'll never admit it. Anybody got pictures??
This is also where Paul (Pavlov) realised his red 4Y is busy losing its head (gasket). He decided to call it a day and watch the rest of us battle the sandy stretch on the way to the campsite. The sand was quite loose, and the entry is tricky, sapping all momentum as the drivers need to negotiate a tight turn. Roy(co) in the Vigo 2.5 SRX took a couple of attempts, and pulled over to deflate his tyres more. There were a few others, including Ciske/Stubbsie/Boetie who had to also deflate to get up the top. After they deflated they all passed with flying colours. Not Tertius Fly-Boy Smit, he approached the turn at approx 140km/h almost flying into the Brandvlei dam. Met genoeg geweld kan mens jou vinger in jou neusgat ook afbreek.
Once back at the campsite some of the guys lit fires and had a braai and reflected on the happenings of the day. Everybody had a good time, and meeting the new faces was great. Paul made it back to Cape Town despite the gasket problem, well done.
Hats off to those of you who traveled long distances to join us like Marius Flying Hilux and Johannes vd See. And to everybody else, I just want to say, a big and warm thank you for your cameraderie, your friendship and the good times we shared today. It was a priviledge to be part of that.
That, my dear friends, is the short version of the events. Do you want the long one?? Just wait until the other guys come add their comments..

There is a fine line between getting a fright and an adrenalin rush, both have the same symptoms though.ThysdJ wrote:

Think I had both!
As for the Safari Seat covers, looks like it's skid mark resistant,

A little too much info Bretton, but we'll hang on for the pics.

Morning gents, the posting of pics will continue shortly, but I'm changing tack... the forum upload tools are a little frustrating, so I will be using Picasa to upload medium res higher quality images, 640px doesn't do alot of the shots any justice!
Please be a little patient, I will commence the Picasa uploading in a mo...
Tx Pieter, conditions were perfect, and I got the hang of the Pentax digital!

Ok guys... all pics are now online in a Picasa gallery, just over 200 of them:
They are uploaded @ 1600px... so you can zoom in to see all the detail & action!

Because... if there was a Hilux type smiley, no other smiley's would ever get used, in fact if would be considered rude to use anything else!SWBrand wrote:Thought of the day . . . how come we have 300 different smiley faces, but not one is of a Hilux . . . ???

Re: Rawsonville Tierkloof - Jan 2011
Thanks guys it was really a lot of fun. It was also amazing to see how the experienced drivers managed the route with ease.
Ek moes omtrent 5 keer nuwe onderbroeke kry... that down hill was something else... and I have photo's to prove it. (nou nie van die onderbroeke nie!!)
Tertius, check out my bash plate!! I need to do something about the "pad skraaper"!!
Here you can see the RH LCSP (not too damaged)
Here is the left hand LCSP, you can see how bent it is.. well, I hope you can see it.
Dankie Uys, I think you save me some serious underbody damage!

Roy, by the time I got to the steep downhill, with the camera, you guys were long gone...
I did manage to get this pic of Tersmit stopping so his lux could do the 'taking-a-leak' pose...

A Million thanks for the great photos Mr B! A man of many talents indeed.
To all that helped to make the day a stunning success...
It was great to learn from the "ou manne" although the highlight for me was the camaraderie shown when I had a head gasket failure.
Great place to be. Exceptional people to be with!

Just remember the a bash plate is made to dent and soak up the impact, if you use too thicker steel, the impact force will be transferred to other more sensitive/critical parts, like shock mounts, engine mounts, etc...tersmit wrote:My bash plate took some serious hits yesterday, a replacement is very high on my to do list.

The bash plate and LCSP is 5mm steel, made by StofPad....tersmit wrote:My bash plate took some serious hits yesterday, a replacement is very high on my to do list.

Nice Pics Bretton! That looks like an interesting trail, not a vehicle basher (apart from the odd bash plate and the Isooz that lost a fender flare) but challenging enough to make it worthwhile ..... and scenic too. (Must do this one next time in the Cape). That burnt veld looks like it must have been quite a fire!
Thanks for the pics!

Andy the Izoos arrived without a fender flare. I suspect he lost it at Tygervalley or one of the other big 5 in Cape Town...Mud Dog wrote:(apart from the odd bash plate and the Isooz that lost a fender flare)

Re: Rawsonville Tierkloof - Jan 2011
Dit was great om comms te he met die hele groep, sonder onderbrekings en swak opvangs. Tertius se handheld se battery was net baie gou pap ten spyte daarvan dat ek hulle almal vol gelaai het vir die trip. The guys were chatting away and sharing their experiences, and road conditions with others, Great stuff!!
