Diesel conversion???
Hi, I am relatively new to this site and don't really know if I am asking for help at the right place. I am planning on buying my girlfriends' dad's 1980 toyota hilux 4WD bakkie. I dont even know what engine it has in except that it is petrol. Since he only wants R25k for it and its only done 202 000kms I think its a bargain. It has been really well maintained and still in very good nic. The only "problem" that I am aware of is that it's very heavy on fuel consumption (+-5km/litre). So I was thinking to do a toyota diesel engine conversion. Will this be worth my while? Does anyone know what kind of diesel engine would be best and how much it would cost? And where can I find one??

Hey welcome here. I take it its the "Scout" shape Hilux with the round wheel arches ?
Those are flippen stunning and very scarce and sought after.... I wouldnt change anything on them.

Danie
The diesels that would fit exept if you go for a KZTE would also not be that economical. And you ratios would be out si that would mean more modifications. This baby may either have the 2Y or 3Y engine in (1800 or 2000). Its consuption should not be very different from a 4Y (2200) if optimised correctly. How about an EFI conversion rather?
P.S.
I agree those shapes are classic, do keep her as std as is, it is already becomming a collectors item, in a few years who knows. Otherwise if you want to convert anything, just make sure you keep the shape as is (do not fit other fenders and grill to make it look like the later shape). See this great looking one.

Re: Diesel conversion???
I suppose you guys are talking about the "Stout" body shape. The 2x4 Toyota Stout was the only Toyota I ever drove with a front suspension that was less compliant than the SFA Hilux. Like the latter, it also had leaf springs in front, on a beam axle.
I would agree you keep it as close to original as possible. Get the engine overhauled if necessary, get the carb sorted, maybe fit a nice exhaust branch, but PLEASE don't go replace that ultra-reliable petrol engine with an underpowered Toyota diesel!

Re: Diesel conversion???
Thanx for the info guys, must say you've made me reconsider the conversion. I'll rather look at other ways to get the fuel consumption lower.
