Our Aussie/Kiwi/Irish Hikux-mates

Post by ThysdJ »

After meeting Bryan and Lani, our touring friends from Down Unda, we discussed a day out so that they could familiarise themselves with their newly acquired Hilux. Bearing in mind that they are complete 4x4 novices, what better place to go for a run than Atlantis, where one can get rid of your spatial disorientation and admire the glorious moonlandscape of the dunes with Table Mountain in the background.

The morning started out with a shower or 2 but after that the sun came out and besides a chilly breeze we had nice sunny weather. Niel and all his brothers showed up to keep us company, and Coenie (Koning Rot) also came along for the fun.

Bryan and Lani started out on hard tyres, and were pretty nervous about their first attempts. They jiggled with the gear lever, and feathered the throttle, and got horribly stuck once, but soon they got the hang of it and with tyre pressures systematically brought down to 0.8 they understood all about the importance of traction and tyre pressures as well as torque, revs and powerbands and stuff. Coenie and I dumped them in the bath-tub and told them to see if they could get out of there without assistance. After a bit of to and fro in the hole Bryan managed to get the Hilux out of the hole, then it was Lani's turn. Must say, she would put many a Cape Town 4Y driver to shame, the way she handled that Hilux and with a few revs, a puff of smoke and hardly a wheelspin the Hilux came out the top.

After that we went to the Horse Shoe, and Coenie put up a spectacular show for our visitors. Must say, that Ford motor sounds cool! Once again B&L dropped in and quickly got the hang of the obstacle, making mince meat of the side approach and running around the back end like pro's. Especially Lani who got dubbed Lani Piston-Slap, for her lack of fear near the red line... :crazy2: :drinks:

Same thing happened at the Big Dune, and by now these two were having a ball, running every dune and trying different gear ratios and run-ups.

We all had heaps of fun, and I am convinced that they got to know their Hilux a lot better. They also feel more comfortable driving it off road as they have a better idea of what it is capable of. Good luck on your journey ahead, and when you get back to Cape Town, we do this again.

If you guys have soime nice pics, please post them here...

What a day we had! Thys and Coenie your tutoring was immense and has prepared us perfectly for our big trip.

Lani feels a lot more comfortable (it was her first time offroading in a 4x4) and she is loving her new 'piston-slap' nickname!

We will upload a few pics to our next blog and make sure we name drop you as a teacher Thys...try to drum up some aussie business for you.

For now here are some pics, the best one has to be me getting stuck as hell.

Cheers fellas

Bryan & Lani

Looks like I'm driving on the Moon! I really had am major jol on the dunes.
As we drove back I started getting really angry about Bryan and Lani: I was green with jealousy about them going off into proper Africa for a whole year. I should’ve done it when I was their age, not worry so much about work and trying to prove a point as I did then.
Godspeed and enjoy your endeavours. :yahoo:
