1976 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000. A red one. I was also lucky, dad bought it for me, or was that unlucky.
I miss that car everyday and wish I never sold it.

Re: Wh was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
First car .. 1968 Renault R10 .... Bought myself. Can't remember too much about it other than that it had an Alconi conversion (pistons / head/ manifolds & exhaust) and ran like the clappers in between the numerous times I had to work on something that went wrong with the motor. It was a rear engined vehicle and the original radiator had been moved and built into a scoop in the front .... had to keep a constant eye on the temp guage. It liked to blow head gaskets because of the higher compression ratio. It had split rims with wide takkies and flared wheel arches.
It looked pretty neat in it's day but I was eventually happy to get rid of it. (The first and last Renault I ever drove).

Peugeot 404, bought it with my army pay, went everywhere & never broke down, only vehicle as tough as a hilux.
The first "expensive" car (R4300.00) i had to buy on HP was a Ford Escort RS 2000, i modified and raced it, sold it, bought it back and sold it again.

My uncle gave me a white '79 toyota corolla 1300 automatic when I matriculated. I swapped it the very next day for a bright orange '76 Mazda Capella 1800 with sunroof, mags, spots, etc. What can I say. When you're young, bling trumps reliability.

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
Dad loaned me his '57 Opel Rekord at end of matric, bought it from him next year with December holiday-work money- paid R 1 500,00 for it. What a car: orange (a real "kapoen" colour) - 1 car, 2 doors, 3 gears (on steering column) and 4 wheels (never had a spare). Synch was a bit out between 1st & 2nd ("scratched" a bit), big wide front and back seats (to enjoy the drive-in).
As solid as a rock: once tried to make a traffic light in Jo'burg, when the lady in front of me decided to rather stop, but her brakelights weren't working... so the Orange Monster modified her VW Beetle by moving the engine forward to right behind her seat. We had to repair the grill and straighten the front bumper on the Monster, but the lights weren't even broken.

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
Obtained a loan from the company I worked for after leaving the Army and bought a second-hand 1960 Opel Rekord Car-a-Van, 6v, 1700cc, 3-speed column shift. Sort of turquoise green on the sides with a white roof. Six months later bearing knock . With the help of a family friend, re-conned the motor and all was well again! Used to go camping often with that car, slept in the back of it with the rear seat folded down.

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
Somewhere in of just after matric dad and I had a JV with 2 DKW's. One was bare metal but complete and the other we drove home - until she ran out of petrol and in the next few months I could only get it to run once, still confused by that. Oh, paid R900 for both and sold for something like R6000, I think.
Our next JV was a Lada Niva. Bought it in George for R4500, drove it to Welkom - the last 60km with only 5th gear remaining. It had a 1600/1800 Toyota engine in. Eventually built a Toy box in, then the rear wheel bearings went. Could only get a new diff. Then the propshaft had to be rebuilt. After that some or the other stabilizer bar broke.....this thing started to cost serious money and ruined my fragile student budget. Sold it for R12000.
Come to think of it, the only car I ever lost money on was the one that was stolen...

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
My first vehicle was a Metalic light blue 1992 Corolla GLS Executive. Aircon, alloy wheels, central locking, Radio/tape, Alarm/Immobiliser and a gearlock. It was my mom's car and was bought in 1992 by my dad. I did use it in Matric to school and back, and was the only matric with a car that had aircon in it....... All the others got new cars but none had aircon fitted.
I got the car in 2004 when I moved to jhb. It was a agreement in the house that the Conquest was my brother's car and the corolla was mine when we started working.

19 late 70s early 80s not sure really, Datsun 1400, was my dad's work bakkie that the driver trashed, he said if I could fix it I could have it. Fixed it drove it for a few years. Still love 1400s drive one now as my daily run around.

an immacualte 1986 Nissan Exa Turbo - my Dads old car, got it for my 19th Birthday
up to that point I had riiden motorcycles since my 50cc on my 16th Birthday
...probably not the best to give a 19 year old (motorcyclist) a turbocharged car for their first car (but thats another story)

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
A red '83 Ford Bantam 1300 that Pops kindly supplied when I finished matric and waved me off to my Holiday job in Sedgefield that he had organised.
Was in great condition well looked after from a mate of his and supplied amazing memories of road trips with my surfer friends around the Eastern Cape( no I could not surf i tried but almost drowned fav quote then was "there only heat waves in the Karoo").
Unfortunately i wrapped it around a telephone pole after falling asleep on a trip back home for holidays 2 years later and was heartbroken, replaced with a gold one with a sunroof only to be informed it was a mates moms old one and was buggered, luckily had red bakkie as spares.Have now fond memories of old man and I swapping out engine and gearbox one holiday although then it was not so pleasant.
I so envy u chaps that have managed to hang on to ur originals well done.

paid by me ...1991 Citi Golf CTi 1800 - the benchmark for all boy racers in Klerksdorp ! Could not go to Star roadhouse without someone wanting a "dice".
ate a GLi twincam 16V corolla (one of my best mates) for breakfast down Roderick Campbell road, regularly...
Edit: also had an RZ50... '83 model, dad paid, R900 (my rich friends parents bought them brand new '90 models). I paid for the petrol, full fairing, respray & engine rebuild.
