TOM TOM One XL Widescreen GPS Kicks Butt (At Under R2000)
TOM TOM One XL Widescreen GPS Kicks Butt (At Under R2000)
The Bridgestone Night Challenge in Slaapies this past Saturday night required pin-point GPS Navigation Accuracy, it was not just about Offroad Driving Skills.
Heats included:
1. Shortest Straight Line in Atlantis Dunes to a GPS Co-ord.
2. Each Stage was given to Competitors by GPS Co-ords (mostly off the beaten track) with multi-check points.
According to the Fundis SWAMBOs el-cheapo (under R2000) TOM TOM One XL GPS is was not up to the task, we were doomed to failure
However, I can assure you that, in the right hands a TOM TOM One XL can hold it#s own with the Leading Brand (in RSA) Models which 3 times++ the price GPS Instruments.
We found every check-point timeously, unlike many in the field who were armed with Big Boyz Navigation Toys
Infact: My Ace Navigator and humble TOM TOM netted us a top-end straight line result and the Fastest Stage Time in the Forest Dash Navigation (Stage 11) this weekend; not bad since most of the field had twice the Engine Capacity and Cylinders of Dadz
Great to see that there are cheaper Options for the Offroader and Overlander than some of the GPS Fundi s will let you believe.
Sure; Trackss4Africa (thanx Andy) is Garmin compat only at present, but believe me Competition does great things for the us the humble consumer.
Dadz Verdict: Garmin is hideously over priced in RSA due to it#s monopoly and hood-winked consumers
TOM TOM is the UK#s Leading Brand and fast gaining speed in Africa, worri not manne
The TOM TOM One XL has a huge but incredibly slim widescreen LCD with Auto Day/Night colour switch and is rechargeable so going cordless for several hours is no sweat and the text-to-speech facet is lekker .

I think you mean "Tracks4Africa", Rich .... maybe the 'late night factor you referred to earlier
Pretty much standard features, I think, .... I get about 5-8 hrs re-charged cord-free time and many additional features for only a little extra cost on the Nuvi 500. One thing the Tom Tom has and the Nuvi not is Bluetooth data transfer, which could be very handy for map / track sharing. The TOM TOM One XL has a huge but incredibly slim widescreen LCD with Auto Day/Night colour switch and is rechargeable so going cordless for 2-3 hours is no sweat and the text-to-speech facet is lekker
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Re: TOM TOM One XL Widescreen GPS Kicks Butt
Hentey, I looked back in my posts to see when it was that I was looking to buy. Turns out it was at end Jan 2009 .... more or less the same time you mention you got yours, and there on the thread was this post of yours ...
So if I understand correctly, you only paid 1300 as a part of a cellphone deal, but were told that the going rate was 5000 (excl or incl T4A?). If incl. T4A it would sound about right for the time, since my cost was a limited special. While all the dogs are on this post, got a nuvi 500 when upgraded on my cell contract.Had to pay in R1300.00 but the normal selling price was nearly 5k. Just remember the tracks for Africa software is an opsional, witch can set you back another 500-600 bucks.Dont trust any Tom Tom Dick Dick Harry Harry in the bush.

My Nuvi 710 does indeed have BT data transfer! One thing the Tom Tom has and the Nuvi not is Bluetooth data transfer, which could be very handy for map / track sharing.
Current Selling Price of the Nuvi 500 is around R4700.

My choice is influinced by quality, back- up, parts and accesories availability and resale value, not by the screen size or functions.
Would you have won the competition with a bigger GPS?

Sorry Eric .... should have been more specific ... I was referring to the Nuvi 500 in the discussion. Pity about that though, 'cos it's a nice little machine otherwise and BT would have put it over the top. :DFamily_Dog wrote:My Nuvi 710 does indeed have BT data transfer! One thing the Tom Tom has and the Nuvi not is Bluetooth data transfer, which could be very handy for map / track sharing.

There's a new Garmin on the way that is designed to replace the 276C. Nice big screen for youngsters like me, but nice big price as well

Re: TOM TOM One XL Widescreen GPS Kicks Butt (At Under R200
Been down the Tom Tom route, with a One XL and I nearly got lost coming back. Tom Tom is a piece of absolute junk.
Before I could put a hole through mine using my .416Rigby and a 400gr Woodleigh solid somebody convinced me to give it to them in trade for a box of bullets.
I'd rather follow a crayon map drawn by a 3 year old than using a Tom Tom again.

Tom Tom's are fine for teerpad driving and nav... but offroad is the issue... T4A works perfectly on the Garmin... therefore a Garmin works for 4x4 offroad applications!

Probleem is dat die ondersteuning vanaf Tom Tom is 0. So as jy probleme optel is dit maar jou persoonlike tragedie.

After reading the attached ROUTING TEST (even though it is a bit old) - I'll never even consider getting a Tom Tom.

I might be a bit doff but on my last trip in jhb believe it or not my Nokia route 66 gave me better directions than my Garmin but then i also have a tom tom which i find more user friendly. When i go out of the country i find i rather use my Tom Tom
