SA4x4 - March 2010 - Everything but the kitchen sink

Post by ThysdJ »

He might make your blood boil, or he might make you change your mind entirely, but one thing's certain: 's views on overlanding are sure to get a reaction out of just about everyone.
I came across this very interesting article by a guy called Tim Ebersberg who is in the "Safari" business for a while now, and had a good chuckle, as i see so much of myself and my fellow Hilux-Forumians in the article. He offers a fresh point of view on the whole 4x4 overlanding accessories industry and the suckers who falls for it all.

Read it if you dare...

Great read
This is going to be my philosophy with the new van. Maybe not so extreme. I am going to re-read Jan Joubert’s book. He had the same kind of approach.
Still deciding on the RTT  The fridge definatly stays

The RTT stays, and the fridge...... basically because I already have it, but there is a lot of other stuff I wanted to buy which I am rethinking...

Agree, a good read - I've also made some changes and it's amazing how much of a difference a couple of kg's make wrt handling, etc.

But obviously we kit vehicles for different applications for example overlanding and weekend trails....

Maybe we should start a fred for each and list what is important and maybe more importantly :) what is not

The ideal (like he mentioned) is to have a kitted vehcile just for overlanding and then your day to day runner.
My problem is my day to day runner and overlanding is the same.I will have to keep a balance.

Finally! It's what I've said here many times ... weight is the enemy! What I keep in / on the van as permanent extra equipment is no more than about 20kg. I then pack the vehicle in accordance with the trip requirements.

haha good article, probarly exactly why I am still procastinating on further mods to my bakkie, whereas just to use the cash that I were to spend rather for fuel for more surf trips, when ever there is swell.

I still wouldnt mind a 40/50 fridge tho, really getting tired of forgetting to buy ice and then ending up with soggy chops after 3/4 days.
