Lugtenk

Post by MORNE »

My opinion is that the compressor behind the seat is good for the worst case scinario, a tank somewhere under the car, for the odd tyre topup, maybe even try get a valve on there that you can fill the tank at the garage when required, and if you can do this all with a old Divers tank, great, for its capacity.
Not sure how do-able that all is though... :problem:

OK here goes.....I had a 20l airtank fitted under my 2.4. A airpump cant fill it to 8bar. Garages have limits as to how much they can pump / produce. The best I could get was 10bar, then their compressor cuts out.

With a 20l airtank at 10bar you can only pump up a 265/75/15 tyre from 1 bar to 1.8bar, then the tank is empty.

Using a dive bottle, u get 250bar. Much better but has other implications, refilling / visualising every year and you have to have the right attachments.

What worries me the most is if that bottle says caboom :!: for whatever reason, you will prob go straight to heaven

None of this makes sense to me either. Your mini compressor is not designed to run for long periods ... it will burn out. Why would you need to carry a volume of compressed air ... no good reason I can think of except if you perhaps de-bead a tyre, but even there, lighter fuel is so much quicker without the weight and space issues. Even without lighter fuel, a tornique around the circumference of the tyre while jacked off the ground will seat the beads well enough for the mini compressor to pump it up. It works. I've done it.

Next you will be wanting to have a built in gen-set with a drawer system for your power tools etc. No man, keep it simple and lightweight.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I have seen in a 4x4 book that the guys just use the spare wheel for the purpose of beading a tyre that came of the rim. They pump the sparefull up, can't remember to what bar, and then used a hose attachment. They attached the hose to the wheel that needed beading first, and then to the sparewheel... the sudden flow of air into the sparewheel caused the tyre to bead instantly...

I haven't tried this... I guess your sparewheel can also be seen as a "tank" ...

Do you know of anyone selling these sort of hoses needed to fit on both wheels...

Easy enough to make up yourself, the fittings and hosing are readily available.

Morne, all you need to reseat a tyre is a little bit of lighter fluid and a match... kaboom daar sit hy.. I have done this before, it works...   Then use the compressor to inflate the wheel to the correct pressure.

I installed a small 2 litre tank in the engine bay when I installed the ARB compressor for the diff locks. That way the system has pressure with a reserve volume, and the compressor doesn't have to run everytime you engage the lockers.

I used a Festo stainless steel air receiver and also connected it to a manifold block with a fixed gauge and quick coupler for inflating the tyres.

Salute',
My drawbar (Towbar) rusted through and I replaced it with a sched 40 carbon still pipe (2 off) with drain plugs on the side. These I use as my "air tank". My compressor is fixed, outlet to tank and Quick Coupling, kicks in at 400 KPag and out at 600 KPag via a press switch. I switch on and off only. I found this tank + PUMP RUNNING to be ample to get tyre back on the rim. After 3? years I parked on an angle to drain the pipes/tanks I found no water inside. Note I have a cerifugal in-line drier on the outlet of the complessor complete with autodrain (when bowl of drier gets a water level, it drains automatically). Note you rpipes inside diameter must be large enough to eliminate pressure drop. The only restriction is the valve orifice. Done 12? years ago. I have photos. Want to see?, email me stheron@chevron.com. Regards.
PS: I used an air con pump in the begining but are curently using a high volume dual head pump.
