Engine nr change reg

Post by cprinsloo »

Hi all,

Do I need a receipt for changing engine number after a conversion? Mark Watson did mine, but I have no idea where he bought it.

Cheers,

Chris, as far as I know you need to get the engine number cleared at a SAPS, who will then issue you with a certificate. You then need to present this to the local Vehicle Licencing Authority who will issue you with a new disc. Simply providing a receipt for even a new engine does not work.

Yup, clearance certificate from SAPS on the 'new' engine. Then registration paper with ID to your registering authority. You might have to pay a slight premium on the annual licence over what you did before because of the bigger motor.

Thx for the feedback. I know I have to get the SAPS clearance, just wasn't sure if I need a receipt when I go to them.

Just get Mark to issue you with a receipt with the engine number on it. That is what you need to get SAPS clearance.

Hi Chris
You not need a invoice for the purchase of the engine. Firstly go to the licence office and get a engine no. change form, take the original registration certificate and the ID of the owner with. Then you must do a datadot on the vehicle and also there you must have all the papers. After that you go to the SAPS with all the papers BUT make a copy of the datadot certificate and the invoice do not give the original to the SAPS you can present the original only. Then they will give you a clearance certificate if the engine is clear on the system. After that all you can go to the licence office with all the papers to change the engine no. they will only give you the new licence disk. I hope you come right.

:eh: :eh:

I think you might need some sort of letter/receipt from the installer of the engine, reason I say that is for my trailer to go through clearance I had to get a letter from my dad stating that I got/bought the trailer from him together with a certified copy of his ID and the original reg certificate of the trailer. On top of that I also needed the data dotting and a new VIN number (original serial number was too short and came up as a duplicate on the system), and a RWC of course

And this was a fully lisenced trailer all up to date; only thing was the original reg certificate was an old pink Tranvaal one...hence the whole clearance business, which cost more than the trailer is likely to be worth

Thx Stef, I think that trailers are a bit different, AFAIK one can't build your own trailer any more, and there some issues w.r.t. the weight that a trailor can carry (maybe it's still pending). One can't use an old moeg Venter and use the reg nr and chassis nr to build your own off-road trailer, maybe that's why they are more full of cr@p when you register an old one.

That's all true...i actually had the trailer with me at the time, but the issue here was about whether it was stolen or not , whick is the purpose of a police clearance, and I think it would be the same for a replacement engine.

Guy that worked for me bought an engine from Barrie here on the forum and got pulled over in a road block on the way back. Police wanted a receipt as well to prove that it wasn't stolen; they very nearly confiscated the engine. fortunately they could get hold of Barrie en he could verify the info ..

Bottom line is that you might need some form of proof that it wasn't stolen, although it might not show up on the system as stolen or as a duplicate.

Best way is to just go find out ;-)

I did the Surf last week.
For police clearance you only need your vehicle's registration papers, a receipt from the person who sold you the engine. In my case where I bought the vehicle with engine in they also wanted a letter from the seller to state that he sold the vehicle to me and a copy of his ID.

That was all.
They clear it, you go for datadot, you go back to cop shop, you get your papers.

Then after that you can go to registration department.

Seems it is a big mystery to what happened to Mark Whatson.
I would write a receipt on his behalf and write his name, business address and cell number on it.
You probably got that.
DO you have an invoice he gave you for doing the conversion?

O ja, I don't want to be negative, but if something goes wrong and if it was perhaps a stolen engine, remember that the only thing they may take is the engine block. Apparently they give you 3 or 4 days time to deliver it back to them (in the Western Cape that is).
