D4D in SFA

Post by MonsterLux »

So I know this topic has been discussed several times. So lately I searched for all the information on the forum about engine conversion I could get. So the conclusion I made was Horses for Courses. After coming across viewtopic.php?f=92&t=16090&p=178026#p178026" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I found my horse for my SFA.

After reading the whole thread I have a question. What will the reason be that he used a prado gearbox instead of a 4x4 D4D gearbox or making up a bellhouse to use the SFA gearbox on the D4D?

HI

The Prado box is a strait bolt on the block of the d4d and the kzte is the same so they fit on the same bellhousing and i think it is a bit stronger box
Hope it answers you question

Correct, but the front prop exits on the wrong side.

I'm building an adapter to fit my SFA transfer onto the Prado box

Thanks for the information. So if I understand correctly I am going to need an adaptor for either the prado or kz box to accommodate for the SFA transfercase.

Hoppy can you please upload a few pics off the adaptor you are bussy with. I would like to use the SFA transfercase because with time I want to install a dual crawler.

The KZTE front prop is on the same side as the SFA, but it's a chain drive transfer, no Crawler gears available, I have a 5-1 Marlin Crawler kit in mine and i want to retain it.

You can also get a D4D gearbox, same as Prado with passanger side exit front prop

Thank you for all the help Hoppy. I also want to retain my SFA transfercase with the plan to install future marlin crawler goodies. Wouldn't it be less mods if one can keep the current gearbox set up of the SFA and just make a belhouse to D4D?
Sorry for all the questions but I am a rookie in the whole conversions.

Hello Johan
The SFA uses the "G"series gearbox (I think).
Prado, D4D and KZTE all use the "R" series gearbox in various configurations, which are a lot bigger and stronger.
I have seen the G series destroyed behind a Ford V6. The D4D has a lot more torque and will make short work of it.
Your best bet will be to use a R series box that can bolt straight onto the D4D motor and then use an adaptor for the SFA transfer to accommodate the crawler gears.
I think Dr. Hoppy will concur.

Thank you Roelof

So then it would be a R series box with adaptor for SFA transfercase. You guys are the best.
