DECIDING WHETHER TO INSTALL CHIP ON A HILUX 3.0 D4D

Post by Alex2539 »

Hi there

My hilux just reached 200000 km on the clock. The bakkie still drives perfect, the only major thing that was replaced was the turbo at 120 000 Km and clutch at 170000 km. I see many people have installed chips in these motors. Can anybody advice on a good chip brand and whether there are any side effects i should be worried about when considering installing one.

many different opinions on this ....

1) leave it be - you know what you have, and you know it will last many more kilos ...

2) plug and pray chip - "some say" these are pre-programmed to over supply diesel thus providing diesel .... personally not a fan

3) fully programmable chip - have it fitted by a reputable tuning company, that also fine tunes it to specific dyno values. In Windhoek your altitude means "standard settings" may well result in total over supply of fuel. Rather have it properly tuned for YOUR location. I had a chip fitted and properly tuned, on a 2,5 - very happy with the results.

My KZ-TE chipped from very low kilos. Currently on 353000km and pulling like a train. EGT way below 650°C

What chip have you on your 1KZ please Louis?
Did you do it for fuel efficiency or performance?
Interested cos my Prado is a dog on the highway and she drinks diesel big time.

Only chip to trust is a Unichip.

Had my Kz chipped on 72000km and sold it on 433000km. Had the head replaced on 400 000km and it only had one crack where the most Kz's had cracked heads at around 200 000km with mostky two cracks.

Yes, just fitted an AMC Head, had two cracks over number 4 pot at 280,000.
Will research Unichip, is it Plug n Play or a workshop jobby?

Dastek Q+ only chip that does not give problems...if you read the forum

I did it together with an IC to see whether I can get my EGT values down. It worked.

Fuel consumption the same - 7.5 km/l

A lot more power/torque

Mine was a dog, now its a young dogImage

Will check out Dastek too.

Have a factory fitted IC.

And a spare genuine Toyota one with Boost Sensor I'm looking to sell if anyone is in need.

Alex..

My 2010 D4D (160 000km) was treated to a plug&pray RaceChip about 30 000km ago. Results were amazing. Until a little while ago, when the clutch started slipping and the bakkie started going into "limp" mode for no apparent reason.

I unplugged the chip, and all those problems are over now. The clutch is still shot, but I was going to replace that anyway.

I got used to the extra power, it made the D4D nice and responsive and a pleasure to drive. Now I am missing it...

But all is not lost.... Next step from here is to replace the clutch with something that can actually handle 500Nm +, not the standard Toyota rubbish, then do a free flow exhaust and then a Q4 chip and tuning. Got the go-ahead from the Minister of Finance and Fun on the weekend.

BTW that RaceChip is for sale.. Only used it to drive to the mall and back..

Most chips are rubbish, tuned to suit any rig. If you value your pride and joy go with a full wire in unit like the HKS and then it'll be dynoed to suit your engine and mods. Guys over here do a package with the computer, exhaust, bigger flywheel and clutch.

I have heard of hiluxes burning holes in pistons in the dunes when chipped.

I wouldn't. If you want more power, have it remapped by a good tuner with EGT reading integration.

Hi all what does remapping involve? How much can they remap, and if they can remap the standard computer why get a chip then.

From what I've been told here in aus they need to open up your ecu so they can modify it to allow it to be adjustable. Don't quote me tho! Thats why some people r still shying away from it, who pays for the new ecu if they cock it up!

I've had the RaceChip Ultimate on my 3.0 D4D for 14 000km now. HAs not skipped a beat and I'm loving it. No problems at all and I get 11,5km/l open and urban mixed driving. It really brought her to life.

Haven't used any oil or coolant as it should be.

Overall I'm very impressed and happy with the unit.

I must add that I did have Toyota replace my clutch with an uprated one but that was before chipping. No slipping whatsoever.
