Effect if RTTs on trial driving
Hi all,
This is probably a silly question showing my ignorance. But....
I have just added both roof top tents to my Lux in preparation for a short Lesotho trip in a couple of weeks. Wanted to get it all up to make sure all is still fine since I havent used them jn a while.
Now I am lazy and dont want to take them off before the trip, but I got an opportunity to do a trial I have been wanting to do for a while before the trip. I have never done a trial with this extra weight on top... Will I be looking for trouble to go as is??? Rather remove it and put it back again?? I dont use it as a daily runner so the extra fuel cost for leaving on not an issue. Thanks Below is a pic if my "overlanding/ tour" setup
Also, with the family of 4 we need two rtts. Is there a clever idea for opening the "windows" between the two tents for some communication purposes?? Not enough space to get the flexible "tentpoles" in to open the external cover (i hope this makes sense...)

Depends on the trail I suppose ..... if there are severe side-slopes or the possibility of the RTT getting damaged by overgrowth / trees then take it off.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Well its the Serendipity eco trials... If that makes a difference. I was told its not too hectic, but I guess I wont know until i am there...
Thanks for the replies. Seems like its removing it or wait for a next play date.

But, Most places have excape routes and a bit of gardening with a small saw or bush cutters can sort most problems out.
get used to working around your RTT as that is your setup on overlanding trips as well. Learn to judge your overhead height etc...
Concerning your tents, if you had one opening over the back and one over the front you would just have the fly sheets overlapping which is less of a problem, OR,
just let the fly sheet hang down between the tents, making hooks or tie down points for them...
I always left my RTT ON. Now with the camper I always have that added height, but am always aware of it.

The bulk of serendipity should be fine but there are some more extreme challenges. So all depending at what you want to do.grobbepj wrote:Well its the Serendipity eco trials... If that makes a difference. I was told its not too hectic, but I guess I wont know until i am there...

You think you already know what the right thing to do is you are just hoping that we tell you differently
I would recommend removing them.

Pieter, I am as lazy as you. keep them on but have a look at each obstacle if there is someone who can drive in front of you, if it looks to difficult just bail out.
You don't want to damage the tents or worse before your trip....

After my "small" mishap at Moegatle I am not really into the extreme stuff... More looking for scenic trial to give me a reason to drive up a mountain :-)... And to keep swambo in the vehicle
But maybe I will just postpone for now and safe the diesel for the other trip...
It is significantly higher with the tents on... Thanks for the inputs!!!

Re: Effect if RTTs on trial driving
