Roof top tent fittment question

Post by 4x4Grant »

Hi Guys

I have a roof top tent i will be fitting on my KZTE DC. I however want to mount it on the Canopy
Its a Bucco slim line canopy.

Has anyone done this and do they have any advise?

I dont think fitting it directly on is wise as the canopy doenst seem to be thick and strong.
I would think i would need to build a frame to support the weight of the tent so that the canopy
is not taking all the weight?

Any and all advise is welcome.

Grant contact Bucco canopies and ask them what is the maximum weight allowed on your canopy. I had a Beekman and they confirmed that it can hold 50kg per point x 4 = 200kg. The tent was +- 58kg add weight of persons. I personally think the vehicle roof is better. I do have photos of a guy who installed a frame inside his canopy PM me and I will mail them to you.

On my previous van I put it ont he fiberglass canopy with no problems.30 000km on rough road and all well.I used some angle iron to spread the load and in the inside I had bracket to connect it to the roll bar to minimise the flexing from side side which I think is very necessary

Grant, Why don't you put thr RTT on the cab? I just put four foof carriers on my previous Lux. Under the feet of the roof carriers l put pieces of the covering that neatens the metal edges around the doors. This stuff has etal inside, which prevents the sharp feet of the roof carriers from orking themselves through your rain gutters. Have heard of many RTT that have gone through the guttering and ended up on theroof of the vehicle. I then opened the RTT over the bonnet of the vehicle and made a bracket for it to fit onto on the bumper. I could now even move the vehicle to another position with the RTT open or move it out of danger if there was the danger of fire or water flooding.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Haboob i think it may be a better option for me to mount it on the roof and fit a roof rack on the canopy.

I figured it would be easier for me when not travelling to just remove the canopy and leave the tent on it till the next trip.

If you go the canopy route, you will have to fit canopy stays, especially at the back where the door is .... that's the weakest point. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I prefer the RTent on the canopy and the rack on the cab, 4x4 direct sells the slider kits to fit a roofrack on the cab and the tent on the canopy

Stays or braces that are secured to the load-bin and support the roof of the canopy, both from downward and side-way stresses .... much the same as in the pics Andre posted. The adjustable type are all fine and well as long as the adjustable sections are sturdy and cannot 'slip' out of adjustment. ;-)
