Hooter

Post by Eyeman »

Hi Guys.
This may seem like an odd request, but here goes.....
I'm looking for a new hooter for my Lux - something to wake up pedestrians and shake up taxis.
I was thinking along the lines of a hooter that sounds like gunshots (?legal) or even that old type of "hooooHaaaaaa" hooter.
I'm tired of the inconsiderate ones and want to stir things up a bit!!
Any advice out there?

Those hoohaaa hooters will not get you the attention you are wanting. (They are called bullhorns).

Go with those "air horns". They are load and get the attention. A good make is Fiam.

Then you can go mental and get really load hooters... similar to those on trains. It all depends how deep you want to stick your hand in your pocket

Ha Ha Ha, I see you get some very interesting pictures if you search for "air hooters" on google and then click the images tab.

Anyway I had in one my of previous cars one of those air hooters sets you buy from Midas. It has two red air hooters with little compressor. That use to get some attention.

I have one of them hooohaa hooters in my garage, wanted to fit it to my trokkie, but it is not that loud and it does not sound quite like the real old thing.

You will need a small reservoir / tank for compressed air ... ARB makes a setup that would work, and that little compressor (electrical) really delivers. Pricey though! ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I will be receiving my train horn for car compressor hooter in the next 2 months and will update you guys with fitment and pictures. Also hoping to have a double conversion as a compressor aswell to pump up tyres and general utility.

On a side note, what is the law regarding these? i will have it on a switch with my normal hooter.

The only references that I could find in the traffic ordinance to an "audible warning device" (i.e. hooter / horn) is that it has to emit a continuous sound that is not less than 93db.

I would interpret that to exclude devices that play a tune of sorts or where there is any interruption of the sound emitted but not to exclude a device that delivers a continuous sound exceeding 93db even if the pitch changes (like a siren). Nowhere that I see does it specify pitch or two separate pitches sounded simultaneously.

Not too surprising, but what I did find strange is that nowhere did I see anything that limits the output to "not more than" a given decibel range. I cannot imagine that to be correct ...... if it were, one could legally mount a ship's fog horn.

Maybe someone with some more knowledge of the traffic ordinances could elaborate.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I would be very interested to hear if someone does have more knowledge of traffic ordinances.

My research brought up similar answers to the information you posted Mud Dog.

I'll also let you guys know if i do have any problems with the authorities.

Yeah, come to think of it, on the one SFA I have a compressor with a small tank that is maintained at 7psi .... should be more than enough to fit a decent air horn or two. :D:
