New fog lamps and old wiring?

Post by bullit »

Hello all.

I have purchased a new set of LED fog lamps that I’m fitting into a custom bumper.

I want to use the current wiring and switch within the vehicle. Just makes sense.

My concern however is that the original wiring is a smaller gauge than what the new fog lights have.
I don’t know what the watts are on the new lights either.

Am I taking a chance using the existing wiring and switch?

Thanks.

I think the LED's will draw less than the original incandescent lamps so you should be fine with the old wiring. If you're really concerned, use the original wiring to operate a relay and wire the lamps direct to the battery with an in-line fuse and heavier gauge wiring. That's the route I would go anyway because there is no significant voltage drop and the lamps will be a little brighter.

I don’t know what the specs are for the new fog lights. That’s one of my issues.

Try doing a search on the product and see what comes up. They would normally list specs and give either the wattage or the power consumption / draw.

If I put my multimeter on 20A setting I read 0,71

VxA=W

Would these spots not be give or take 80 watts

I may be way off though I’m not an electrician.
