I have the same model (mine is 2006).
Since I don't have the big bucks I kept upgrades simple. I fitted the facelift shape bumper (got it for R1000, cheaper than fixing the old one would have been) along with the newer style grille - which I like a lot.
Also got the new 17" mags for a steal - R2400 for the set - couldn't pass on them.

Ek sou se begin met die tyres, n lekker stel 31" en dan die nudge af te haal en miskien die silver grill, ek sou ook die running boards af haal, voordat dit seer kry.

Tyres and suspension are important upgrades, but they would have to wait IMO. You can still go off road with that suspension and those tyres, but what's the sense of taking it off road when it's just going to get hurt ...... IMO the first consideration would be the front tupperware to be replaced with an integrated bull bar / bumper that will afford some protection and improved approach angle and those alu side steps to be removed. If the budget allows, replace the steps for sliders straight away. The sale of the side steps should go a fair way to cover the material costs of the sliders, (you could make them yourself perhaps?) otherwise you could wait a few months. Thereafter, suspension ...... and then tyres.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Muddog I have to dissagree with you here.Mud Dog wrote:Tyres and suspension are important upgrades, but they would have to wait IMO. I have never found the standard front plastic bumper to be a problem nor have I damaged mine after 4 years of some serious off roading.
Things on a standard Hilux that will not last once you take the rough road (note for normal 4x4 trails standard is more than fine)
1) Standard bash plates – they are very thin and only give moderate protection
2) Standard nudge bar – this is on a bling accessory and give you less ground clearance in the front
3) Standard side steps – same as nudge bar, they will get damaged on a serious trail.
4) Rear mud flaps – I have lost my second set already.
5) Standard diff breathers are mounted high enough for deep water/mud
6) Standard tires. Fine for highway and moderate off road
In my opinion most of the steel front bumpers don’t look nice. They add a hell of a lot of weight up front and you have to do a suspension upgrade once fitted.
Lets look at the total cost for a aftermarket bumper
Bumper = R15 000
Winch = R10 000 (no use fitting one of these on then not a winch)
Suspension = R 18 000
Quite a costly affair all of sudden.
I you want to go on serious trails I would recommend the upgrades as follows :
1) Remove standard nudgebar
2) Bash plates
3) Remove standard side steps and fit rocksliders
4) Suspension upgrade/ lift
5) Snorkel
6) If traveling alone / winch (fits behind the Tupperware bumper)

Re: Next mod or upgrade, what will it be........... Vigo
Herman, I hear what you're saying, but my thinking goes like this ................
Not everyone has a budget that allows for a 'full house' upgrade in one hit.
Those side-steps will be mangled on the first decent break-over or side-swipe, even with upgraded suspension. So, take them off while they're still good and get some cash back on them by putting them up for sale. Side-swipes are not too common and can mostly be avoided so the sliders could wait a little if the budget is too tight.
Yes, the nudge-bar serves little real purpose when push comes to shove and will also easily be damaged, so sell that too while it's still intact. I think we agree on that but where we differ is the tupperware ............. my opinion is that it doesn't necessarily require an obstacle with an acute approach to take out that valance, again, even with upgraded suspension. One well placed rock, anthill or even a hole could do it. So, again, sell it off while you can still get something for it and replace straight away with an integrated bull-bar / bumper. This need not be an expensive ARB unit or other pricey brand. It could be a home-made unit, either with steel plate or pipe .... we've seen some pretty decent looking DIY units here on the forum. With the raised height of such a unit it will be far less likely to suffer an injury.
The underside bash-plate, protector plates ........ not much argument there, not too pricey to replace, but the existing ones could be reinforced to last a bit longer if needs be.
Suspension. As I said, this is probably the single most important upgrade one can do, but the standard Hilux is already a capable machine, so in my mind it becomes a toss up between salvaging the side-steps, nudge bar and plastic valance for cash before they get damaged ...... a saving that can be added to the budget which might allow for the suspension upgrade to follow sooner than later.
Tyres. Yep, it's all about traction and tyres make a difference. But they are also pricey items and one can get by with the old ones for a while without too much hassle.
A winch is by no means a necessity for general off-roading, a 'nice-to-have' for sure, but only necessary on the odd occasion for the more extreme stuff, and then most of the time it's to assist someone else. I went without for more than a decade and since I have one, I have never really needed it.
Those are the reasons I prioritised the way I did.
