The Perils of Kenyan Roads

Post by bfgjohno »

We've been out here in Kenya now for 12 months and done a good 20,000km. The Hilux was definitely the right choice for the family and deals with anything.

We fitted heavy duty OME coils at the front with Koni Heavy Track Raid shocks all round. I've just been out to check the car before a 150km trip to drop my son off at school and found this on the offside front

Needless to say it's going into the local garage and won't be taking the boy to school. They've only ben on 12 months. I'll check out Koni's warranty.

Ooooch indeed. Yes the weld ontop of the eye seems to have sheered/fractured.

That's interesting ... Koni's are supposed to be one of the premium brands!

That would void the warrtanty. But if you were really stuck with no spares available, you could do it. You would have to press the bushes out of the eye first, fortunately you don't have to worry about the valves in the shock because the lower stanchion is long enough to act as a heat sink .... just cool it off slowly afterwards with running water on the stanchion as far from the weld as possible .... cooling too quickly will make the weld brittle. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Welding I think it will be - at least to get back on road. But if I can get a shiny new shock all the better.

A few photos from the past 12 months.......

That is a common problem on the Vigo, the bushes also wear out and that causes it to snap even quicker
