Fitting bigger tyres on 4.0 V6

Post by PUW »

Hi. I want to fit 285/65/17 AT tyres (same diameter as 265/70/17) to my 2011 facelift hilux V6, currently running 265/65/17. I just want to know if anybody has done this and what was the effect on performance, cruise-ability and fuel consumption?

Me finks it will work without any major issues

Q: Why would you look at fitting 285/65/17's?

Why not rather 265/75/17? Will give you quite a bit more height

And I don't want to go too high on diameter (the 285 already about 800mm)

Agree with Mark.. the added profile height of the 265/75 is going to be more of an advantage in sand driving that the extra width of the 285/65

So I have fitted the 285/65/17 AT tyres and must admit they fit quite well in the wheel arches. They do not look over size. I did raise the front of the bakkie by 25mm before hand. Will just have to see what difference they make on performance and consumption.

Add a set of 30mm wheel spacers, it will complete the look.

Hi PUW,

Also looking at a 285/65/17 AT tyre to fit on my Fortuner with Dick Cepek Torque mags. Where did you get the tyre and what price did you pay?

I have a 40mm lift but clearance already looks very limited in front with the std 265/65/17 tyres. Does you not touch at all when turning or at full articulation?

Regards
Jaco

I was running the 285's no problem with a 20mm spacer up front. Basically never use to touch, perhaps once or twice in the dunes if I get airborn.. Since then I have added iron man suspension (400kg) with a 20mm spacer up front to level out the pickup.

I suspect my 8.5" mags with 4mm offset will be the limiting factor as the std tyres with the EFS lift already touches the front mud flap slightly under articulation and sharp turning.

So I will already have to remove the front mud flaps if I want to fit 265/70/17 and seriously doubt that the 285/65/17 will fit :( Both are 32" but the one is wider
