solid front axle conversion

Post by shanenel »

To all the guys in the know.I can get a solid front axle out of a fj 45/47 cruiser will this axle work as a replacement for my 1999 hilux solid diff conversion. What will I have to change. Is the axle wide enough .if this axle will not work what other options do I have.
What is the better option on doing the conversion leavesprings or coilsprings.

I did a conversion a few years ago on my 2003 2.7 Lux. We went the coil route using Land Rover control arms and a Hilux SFA axle. The Hilux axle is slightly narrower than the 2.7 rear axle, so we used wheel spacers. Fitted Land Cruiser ventilated dics with the original 2.7 calipers. Changed the 2.7 diff ratios to match the SFA ratios. This meant that there is no power loss due to the fitment of 33" tyres.

If I can do it all over again I would probably go the leaf spring route: much simpler and cheaper and most parts are off the shelf SFA parts.

I'm not sure if the old LC diff will work, maybe the drum brakes will be a problem. Maybe Hoppy (on this forum) can give you better information.

Old Land Cruiser diff ratio`s Diesel 4.1 - 2F petrol 3.72.

Converting drums to disc`s is not rocket science I have done it on a few occasions. My latest on the V8 G60 Patrol.
