Lexius v8's

Post by 4 PROVINCES »

Hi guys.

I would like to know how many of you guys have fitted the Lexius v8 to your SFA's and if you have had any problems with them?
I would also like know if any of you have gone on any long trips over the boarder and how they have performed?
I also need to know the fuel consumption and what EFI systems were used in the conversion and costs involved?
Thanks gents.

Howzit Densil.
You'll find all the answers under "engine conversions".

I have the spitstronic Titan system.
Gets about 5.5km/l
And payed about R40k to have it fitted.

if done properly it is just like any other vehicle with a stock motor!!

if the conversion gets butchered then you will have problems!!

and have read here of many members that are very happy, and have seen in front of me butchered conversions!!

self have not done my conversion yet!!

however have done a few Toyota gearboxes into Nissans and Fords, and have heard many people say that conversions give problems, self never had any!!
take no short cuts, and you will smile from ear to ear with all that power!!

fuel consumption!!
can give numbers on the Lexus V8 yet!!
however have a Jeep 4.7L V8, and towing the same load it is lighter on fuel then what the Ford 3.4l is!!
so bigger motor does not mean worst fuel consumption!! it often mean better!!

hope this helps !!
enjoy!! :beach:

Thanks guys, I am a GM technision by trade an wanted to find all the ins and outs on this conversion as I am busy rebuilding my Hilux and need a little more power if I wanted to do the sand dunes up north. I think the 2,2 is a little to heavy on fuel and under powerd for what I need it for.
I hear that some guys are getting the motor and full kit for around 10k, thats motor , harness and ecu. So is this real or not and would it be wise to do the conversion on a standerd gearbox and diff as I am going to go 32" wheels?

not sure how to put this, there are a lot of BS stories out there about the Lexus conversion!! and their costs!!

self still say, that if one does every thing one self, then one can, with calling a few favorers for between 26k and 33k!!

and someone who does conversions for a living, has confirmed this!!

to have it done 45k- . . . . . . . . .

motor and wiring up for 10k!!
take this as a warning!! a good warning!!
motor, lets say, R5000
that motor needs to be serviced, including the timing belt, and idler pulleys for that timing belt, new plugs and new crank rear seal!!
these are things that all add up!!

what about flywheels, clutch combo, surge tank, EFI fuel pump . . . . . surge tank

if you have a look at some of my old threads, somewhere I started a thread of my costs, and how I came in at under 30k
due to all my personal set backs, my conversion is heavily delayed!!

by the way, my motor being bench started!!

So it's best to put a few bucks a way to do the conversion right first time, but is it worth it ???????

It always pays to do it right first time. There are a lot of school fees already spent on this so just ask before you take a short cut.

I was told that it would cost me about R40-R45k..............so I saved up R60k and had it done..........the thing is that while they are doing the motor you might also want a bigger petrol tank, solid prop shaft and better brakes etc.
That's what happened to me and I ended up spending R55k on all these things of which about R10k was labour.

It's worth it if you are a "conversion type of guy"!!

Thanks guys for the info and I agree that it should be done right first time.
The solid prop shaft was done how?
If you used an after market efi system one would need to map it correctly.

What is the cost involved in getting the conversion kit excluding fitting the engine?

Densil

The lexus V8 comes complete with it's fuel injection, you'll probs just have to buy the management system, Spitstronic sells kits specially for the V8 along with gearbox controllers. If I remember, they have a basic map loaded as standard so you can start the engine.

Fernando has it spot on

Buying an engine cut-out and ECU is NOT a conversion
often the engine is the cheapest bit
If you are not already very good friends with a fitter and turner or a machine shop then best you start to "suck-up" to someone who is

R45K sounds about right but depending on where you live that will go up or down - here in the Northern Suburbs of Joburg you will probably look at more like R60K running and on the road

You mention that youa re in the trade so you will probably be able to rope in friends and call in some trade favours but I still seriously doubt you will come in under R35K

I love that V8! one day when I'm big and when I marry the daughter of a Saudi Sheek I will do it

Good luck and have fun

Not sure around Durbs but in the Cape you can talk to Hoppy!
I personaly would say the best is to do it yourself because then you know the ins and outs, you can take your time finding out exactly everything you need to know about it and should something happen while driving it you know where to start looking. As you go along and you are haveing difficulty with something for example the handbrake which is in the way you can read up on it and find the best ways to overcome the problem. Basically you learn through others mistakes. Thats what I did and all I have are minor teething problems to sort out as they come up but my van is driving and I am haveing fun every day.
