Hi Evert,

Which Carb has he got fitted to the engine - the Chinese one or something else? The Chinese ones do tend to run rich and there always seems to be a smell of petrol with them.

Hi FD

He has the old standard toyota carb what he got with his origanal toyota 4y.
I also know that his consumption was more or less the same with his previous toyota 4y.
He had a little better consumption at one stage with a weber fitted but took it of becuese he blew the head gasket twice.
With the standard carb he never had that problem.

So nou sal ek graag julle kommentaar wil hoor op hierdie.

Hi Guys
Thought I give you some feedback on my petrol consumption.
1992 Hilux 4x4 4Y
231,000km
petrol consumption before fix 4.6Km/l

I had a carb guy re-build the carb and re-jetted from 175 to 165.
Still did nothing for the PC (petrol Consumption).
Took the vehicle to SAC (Steve's auto Centre) in PE for a dyno test.
Found that the exhaust system was no good and that the exhaust manifold was cracked.
They Fitted wildcat branch and exhaust system and dyno'ed the vehicle increase in Kw from 36 to 42 Kw PC from 4.6 to 6.8 a 46% in-provement.
Interesting fact is that the transmission losses = 32Kw. No wonder the vehicle battles on up-hills.
Spoke to a previous owner who fiited a turbo and he told me that his PC increased to 10km/l

What do you guys think?

Greetings

Willie

Hi there,

Word on the fuel consumption on the open road. Today we drove to Eric in Klerksdorp to do the final Diff installation from Pretoria. To get out of Pretoria I pushed my Red Hilux between 110 to 130km/h for the 1st 150km. We decided to drive far over Ventersdorp to get kms on the clock. At one stage on the GPS my top speed was 156km/h and the average speed was 92km/h.
We also had a wind from the front.

The overall comsumption from Pta to Klerksdorp and back was 7.74lt/km. This is without the ECU being programmed and the distributer being set properly. I hoped it to be more but we drove fast.

Eric, I think it is time to come fetch Bulldog again. How else must I test my fuel consumption?

I hope you enjoy Bulldog with the new Diff!!

Louis

Louis, many thanks once again for all the hard work and dedication put in by you and Abri. I have updated the thread concerning this, perhaps you might have more input to offer as well. I have not yet downloaded the video clip, will post it when I do.

Bulldog's average open road consumption is estimated to be about 8.5km/l minimum. We got 7.7km/l tested over 396Kms, 50% of it city driving and the rest open road driving, at around 120Km/Hr true GPS speed.

I'll report back when Bulldog stretches his legs again.

Hi guys

It's great to have all the posting about diffrernt models and modifications and the fuel cosumption you get. If you get an combined cycle, urban and open road it would be interesting as well.
I don't see many diesels though or are to light on fuel to mention. I get about 7.5 on a combined cycle as a average, on my 2.7 current model. But it all depends alot on driving style too, if you drive old
man fashion compared to burning through those reves it really makes a huge difference, my worst is 5.7 in traffic driving like a taxi, only thing is I can't claim the subsidy from goverment so I force myself to drive civilized.
Another thing I would like to know is if you can really se a real differenc between driving with an open bak or covered one or without a tailgate. And what does the drag from a canopy or rooftop tent
add to your consumption, if you drive the tyres soft or hard did you get a uge difference in consumption?

Arno,

Cassie, sponsor my n seiltjie, dan bust ek Mythbusters se bevinding.

So as mens nou so erg wil raak is daar baie maniere om petrol verbruik beter te kry

Groete
Arno

I hear the the new the TRD V6 launched in OZ is even lighter. I wanted go for the D4D but all our engineering articles about dirty diesel am modern common rails scared me......

It's made in SA

Oooo you must refer to "supercharged" ... maybe it's wrong, I'm not sure and shame on me for that.
I'll check the book.

OK, must be normal 'turbo charged'. I'm not being nit-picking, I really thought it sounded very interesting. :) Especially since you have recorded some of the lowest consumption figures to date on the forum. :o I thought maybe we are in for a nice new version of the diesel engine with lots of low down grunt and (from your experience) low fuel consumption to boot! It would have been a killer for other brands! It’s not like the Hilux is not already putting the screws on other brands though… :) :)

JB

This is the European Spec mate.

It has up to 40% better fuel efficiency than the South African Market Spec :o:

The "SuperCharged" label refers to the main addition a "negative air space regulating Monitor".

better known to you and I as................

Vacuum Guage :P

Cornelius, shame swaer, I just happened to see that no-one replied to your question. Of course by now you've probably already bought a diesel, and you would have learned that diesel's are indeed generally more economical to run, not only on fuel economy but the motors last a lot longer as well. Petrol units have always had more grunt for equivalent engine capacity, but diesel technology is quickly closing that gap.

Sorry for the late response, most of the guys on this forum are pretty knowledgeable and quick to respond. Your query must have slipped through under the radar. Hope to hear from you some more.

NOOOIT  .... I have never heard of 4Y with this figures.
Who is you mackie. For that figures I'll drive up to JHB.
I have exacly the same setup as yours. My import engine has also about 10000k on the clock, and best I get with petrol is 5.5 - 6 km l. With gas it's slightly worse.

Don't worry Shaakir, your figures are nearer the mark for a 4Y in the city
