22RE head gas flow and cam? Any suggestions?

Post by GeorgeJvR »

Ok I want to increase the power of my 22R efi. I’m thinking of a low boost turbo but first want to try a gasflowed head and small cam.
Is it worth it any suggestions as to whom to contact for the work?
One suggestion was Anthony Taylor Developments In Krugersdorp

Any buddy that can share some experience?

A gas flowing of the head will always give a little better performance but the gains hardly warrant the effort / expense in my opinion.

Then I'm not so sure about the cam .... I took mine out and replaced it with a standard one. The reason was that at low revs there was a very significant power loss and the motor really only woke up after 3000rpm. On the open road I had to maintain a speed of 120 or more before I could stay in 5th on inclines. slowing down behind a truck and them trying to overtake when clear to do so sometimes meant dropping to 3rd and using the revs. Town / city driving much better with the standard cam and fuel economy also better.

The idle was always a bit lumpy at the normal 800 /900rpm with the warmer cam so had to set it up to 1000 / 1100. It also tended to stall easily with low rev pull-off and on obstacles, even in low range, I had to keep the revs up in 1st gear ... I wasn't able to maintain a crawl on up-hill obstacles without stalling. Not even EFI could rectify this problem satisfactorily. I wouldn't go the cam route.

If however you decide to try a cam, don't do more than stage one and keep the old one safe so that you can change back. :winkx:

I'm guessing here and would imagine you'll only get an extra 1½ to 2 KW with a gas flow, not something that you're really going to notice easily on the pedal. Over time the little extra fuel saving might justify it. The first thing I would look at though would be any air-flow restrictions snorkel and air filter (the Donaldson is a great filter but restricts flow quickly if it gets dirty).

Next time you're doing a bit of a tar road trip, after about 15 / 20 mins of driving (to get used to the "feel" of the motor's power), disconnect the filter connection and let the motor breathe freely. See if you notice a big difference.

The 22R responds VERY well to gasflowing and a mild cam.

I'm sure you have been visiting www.lcengineering.com?

First do a branch and 57mm freeflow exhaust and if you still lust after more power, go the gasflow route.

I would keep the original carb, I don't think the gains with efi is worth the costs.

You lose low down torq when you use any other cam than the standard one.
