Are my tyres suitable

Post by TimTDP »

The tyres on my Hilux 2020 Legend 50 are:

Dunlop Grandtrek
265 / 60 R18 110H AT25

Are these good enough for travelling in Botswana, towing a BushLapa Boskriek?

Thanks in advance

Hi Tim. I'm not very familiar with the specs on the tyre but I know that the Hilux and even the Fortuner came out with them. More importantly I don't know what the side-wall ply rating is.

It's my opinion that they're not really suitable for real off road conditions, fine for roads and tracks. Also that the profile is quite low which doesn't allow for a lot of deflating for sand conditions very high.

So if you're going to stay on roads and tracks you should be fine but I would try take an extra spare along just in case.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Hi Tim, I use Dunlop SP Trackgrip which is the little brother of Grandtrek for many years. Whether it is tar, gravel, rocky or sand, it had never gave me any problem. With this tyres I had been in Moz, Malawi, Zambia, Namibia and SA. You can trust them.

For normal gravel roads those Dunflops are just as fine as any other make in that size, except BF or Coopers which have stronger side walls. Bots roads dont have many sharp stones that can damage it. However make sure that you are prepared for a puncture or two just in case when going off road.
