To snorkel , or not to snorkel, that is the question

Post by dalkill »

I see quite a few guys have the snorkel on their bakkies... I personally never had the need for it.. most of my offroad driving is sand.
I see some petrol vehicles with snorkels as well. I just don't get it though. Diesel I can understand. From what I heard, as long as snorkel is above water, a diesel engine will run. Don't know how much truth is in this?
But the petrol engine will surely cutout if the dizzy / electricals get wet?

Not with Oom Bennie's Set Up :D:

I'm thinking about a Homemade Stumpy Snorkel; primarily to get Cooool, clean air forced into my Air Inlet, someone in the Cape has a homemade Stumpy...... now who is it... :?:

Cooler air as above statement. No performance gain, looks trick though. Rather spend money on lockers or crawler gears.

The reason behind the snorkel is that reduces dust intake on the airfilter to the vehicle!!! I drive a Petrol engine and has a snorkel fitted....

Yes i Will admit that there is also an image factor related to it, but I fitted mine for cleaner, cooler air into the engine. Also should I cross water like in Botswana or the Caprivi I know that the intake will not be submerged, thus like an insurance for knowing that I can drive through water and not run the risk of the engine sucking water in.......

I do not like going into deep water but sometimes it is the only way and then I cross it confidently with the added preventions taken to keep the engine running...(Q20 on the HT leads, ect)...

Speak to Louis from 4x4 Megaworld pretoria, maybe he can arrange something for you...............

The reason for my snorkel on a petrol engine... much easier to dry the electrics and get going again as to try and get the water out of an engine that sucked it in at the air intake....

Snorkle it, It is the best thing you can do for a motor it picks up the air alot higher then all the dusty muck lower near the road....

I disagree, Diesels in Hilux's (mainly the 2.8D) are bullet proof. What else can you drive under water, through the snow, along the beach and not have one little issue? I have put mine through hell even ran 20psi of boost through it and still has not hurt it, hasent even lost any compression. Just regular servicing and they are more faithfull then a puppy dog.

Our modern vehicles have excellent air filters, if the manufacturer thought it necessary they would have fitted a snorkel. I don’t for one minute believe that a snorkel will reduce the amount of ‘clean air’, but if dusty conditions are that bad
replace your air filter more often, much cheaper then fitting a snorkel.

As for wading through ‘deep water’; if it is that deep that you need a snorkel you should not even consider doing it.
The 4x4 vehicle is NOT designed for 'deep' wading. The long-term damage to the vehicle will cost you plenty.
