The days stage is air'd at 22h30 that evening and is normally either on SS6 / 7 /8, the repeat is then shown the next morning at 6h00.

I believe it's between Geniel and Loeb this year. Loeb I would reckon would take most of the rally type stages but when it comes to the rest I think Geniel will have the upperhand

Cassie

I'm a huge Loeb fan, but I think he'll struggle a bit in the duns, remember the first couple of stages are very much WRC style.

I think Giniel will come to light in the dunes, don't write off Peterhansel nor Al-Attiyah in the dunes. Their dune experience will bod them well.

my predictions are those three on the podium - Giniel on top of course and hoping Leeroy can bring in a podium or at least 4th.

the truly top drivers never risk all on the first few days .....

this is NOT WRC - seconds on the first days become nothing once you hit the LONG stages.

If you're referring to Al-Attiyah, he's in a X-Raid Mini, which is 4WD.

Certainly the Peugeots have surprised everyone with their speed against the 4WD, the only thing is that the Hilux's seem to jump better than the Peugeots at high speed ( they kick the rear up) and that might hamper them a bit in the dunes.

Yes today with the marathon stage, it will certainly show who can balance reliability with speed.

According to the supersport highlights, the hilux is having problems with the altitude making the vehicle less powerfull, something they have struggled with on previous dakars aswell. Hopefully they can sort it out!

but the other Hilux's suffer the same altitude ....

Previous two stages were a "combined" stage with zero work done at night - and Geniel indicated some problems on the first of these two days.

Let's hope they found the issue during the last night and that he may now be at least on pace with the other Hilux units.

Worth noting how the Mini's cant keep up with the Peugoet's ...... Seems like this years results may be a bit of an upset.

Also, let's not forget. Fatigue is about to set in ... with even longer stages coming up. Fun is about to start :celebrate:

Always been a problem with petrol engines, that is where the turbo diesels perform better.

Mickey, that picture was actually taken just after the Hilux was rebuilt in Chile. Leeroy was testing in a quarry close to where the Hilux's were being prepared. So he nearly cocked it up before the Dakar even started :mocking: :mocking:

So today the second part of the Dakar starts and in my eyes the real Dakar - they hit the dunes proper now and I think this is where the Hilux's will be better. Having said that with reservation as the Peugeots have surprised everyone, even the Mini's who are turbo diesel'd aswell. Toyota expected to loose time at altitude, but not this amount.

I'm still predicting at least one Toyota on the podium, if not two. :cooldude: :cooldude:

Chris, just for you.

Not what I wished for, but he got lost , then stuck and think he was pushing too hard. I'm not too sure if he made it back to the service park, so not sure if he's still in or not.

Very sad way to end this epic battle.

Update on Loeb, incredibly, believe it or not, they got it going and to the end of the stage and is lying 8th overall. He's lost about an 1hr, but importantly got to the end of the stage. His crew will ensure that today he gets an almost brand new car.

I certainly dont like the daily changes ......

but when it gets that hot that ALL the medical helicopters are busy with dehydrated racers over hundreds of kilometers ..... it got so bad that no helicopter was spare for any acidents ..... liability and all those soft words ......

are the modern drivers too soft .... or are the conditions so much worse than years gone past ...... with only three days in the dunes.

still. Same top contenders.

Temperatures of 45 deg C were mentioned on the previously shortened stage.

But these temperatures were not uncommon when they were still in Africa... Bit of a Dakar Lite this year.

The way they explained it, it was the bike riders that got de-hydrated, then needed evac ...

With no helicopters racing must be stopped ....

think the cars are the innocent bystanders in this.

Let's not forget, that these cars do get stuck and the physical effort to get it out in that heat must be something else - but yes, that was the same even back then.

Said it before, will say it again. French organisers, French cars, French drivers.

Anyone surprised that the entire Dakar is arranged to suit the French WRC drivers in their French 2wd buggies?

Where's the spirit of the Dakar when a leading driver screws up, gets his car towed over the finishline, has a massive multimilliondollar backupcrew build him an almost brand-new car? That's no achievement in this day and age, with vehicles like these buggies.

The Peugots are allowed to regulate tyre pressure from on board, on the move. Perhaps because they are 2wd? To even things out against the 4wd competition? Just like the restrictions placed on the petrol vehicles to even things out against the turbodiesels?

That's bull.

It's been said by some on this forum that Toyota is aware of the restricrions, they know of the power loss at altitude, yet they persist with the petrol V8.
Same goes for the 2wd cars then, should it not?
You KNOW you've a 2wd.
You KNOW the 4wd cars have an advantage over the changing terrain.

Yet you STILL enter a 2wd???

Because the organisers will make it easier for you. You enter WRC drivers in your 2wd cars, and suddenly even the official Dakar facebook page talks about how "todays stage is more similar to WRC events amd should suit the style of thw WRC drivers". Who happens to be French. In French cars. And suddenly the Dakar stages are WRC stages. Not Dakar stages. Blech.

Really lost my taste for the whole thing, it's just too massively geared towards the big teams with big bucks. Commercial interrests have taken over the entire spirit of this event.
That which used to make the Dakar unique is now lost.
They can keep it.

(all of which makes the achievements of the Toyota team that much the more impressive, considering what they had managed with their resticted -though still massive - budget.
Anyone notice Baragwanath in the quads? That's what I am talking about!)
I feel a lot less wise at 45 than I did at 15.

oh so close for Leeroy Poulter

A solid performance by Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Leeroy Poulter and navigator Rob Howie (#319) saw the crew lead Stage 12 of Dakar 2016 for nearly five hours, narrowly losing out on their first stage win. The pair took the lead from the first waypoint in the 481 km-long stage between San Juan and Villa Carlos Paz, and only relinquished that position within half an hour of the finish. The stage was won by MINI’s Miko Hirvonen, with Nasser al-Attiyah in second and Poulter/Howie finishing third.

“Leeroy and Rob drove a stunning stage today, and remain in fifth place overall,” said Toyota Gazoo Racing SA Team Principal Glyn Hall, from the bivouac at Villa Carlos Paz. “They looked on for a stage win, but missed out on that by just 45 seconds. And that after five-and-a-half hours of flat out racing! The excitement in the bivouac was immense, as the team watched Leeroy and Rob increase their lead at every waypoint.”

Their triumphant charge came to an end, however, when they caught up with teammates Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz (#301), who were fighting a battle of their own at the time. Poulter/Howie fell foul to a tightening corner, which they couldn’t discern in the dust. They left the road and lost two minutes extracting their Toyota Hilux from the deep rut in which they came to rest. Even so, the pair lead the stage until the penultimate waypoint, and very nearly chalked up their first win
