Loadbin rubberizing removal
Morning All
Question to those in the know,
How/what is the best way to remove the rubberizing of the inside of the load bin?
A grinder with wire brush, doesn't have much impact against 5mm thick rubberizing, burning it off is a option but imagine the mess and hassles when that stuff is soft and melting.
Is there a releasing agent or something which can be used?
Cheers Zane

Yes there is!!! It is called elbow grease!
Is it real rubber or the sprayed on Polyurethane?

Thabo exactly what I didn't want to hear
Its an actual rubber, not sure how it was put on, but it aint easy to remove.
What I was thinking, if I could get some releasing agent, to try and inject it under the rubber so it can loosen up the hold it has abit.
There'll still be a load of elbow grease as mentioned, but at least then it wont be 6 elbows of grease, and only the 2 which I have.
I've even been told that sand blasting aint gonna remove this stuff by the sandblasters, maybe bull and they were lazy but who knows?
Thanks,

Thinus Cheers,
I have tried a few, and pritty much they say the same thing, Elbow Grease.
Was just trying my luck to see if there was an easier way known, as alot of guys here have some sweet remedies for the seemingly impossible.
Thanks Zane

Re: Loadbin rubberizing removal
Rubberizing is usually sprayed on, but that does noet mean it gets taken of easily.
They usually roughen up the surface onto which is is sprayed with a grinder to ensure a tight and secure bonding to the loadbin.
To take the rubberrizing of is going to take you 4days with a hammer and a chisel. I have done this myself on my SFA and that is the only way you get it of and yes it going to keep you busy for 3 - 4 days on a D/C loadbin. :wth: :wth:
Once the 90% of the rubber is off you can use a baby grinder with a 80grit flap disc sanding wheel on it to clean up the surface and make it free from rust. Be warned though, this is no easy task and really takes its tolll and don't be at all surprized to see rust underneath the lining. THEY DO RUST UNDER THE LINING....
Happy chiseling friend!!

When i was finished I was told that an acid bath removes it and all the rust in a day.
just need a company which has an acid bath big enough...

Re: Loadbin rubberizing removal
That is good to know but I will go that route only when I am respraying the whole vehicle as I suspect the acid will surely damage the paint of the loadbin.wicked_rick wrote:When i was finished I was told that an acid bath removes it and all the rust in a day.

Re: Loadbin rubberizing removal
Yeah, it strips off EVERYTHING,
you get it back as grey metal with lots of nasty holes where the rust was - anyway thats what my beetle doors looked like when I got them back.
then had to get pretty handy with the gas welder and grinder :)

Re: Loadbin rubberizing removal
Cheers Guys
Will look into the acid bath scene.never thaught of that. LOTS of ACETONE, melts cigarette buts so should melt the rubber LOL
Only probs I have is, a load bin will be delivered and only a few minor off cuts of steel will be returned due to the amouont of rust
Personelly I would never rubberize any vehicle of mine as I've seen how they rust underneath the rubberizing no matter what they tell you.
Stone Chip is my choice personnelly.
Thanks for the help, much appreciated,
Zane

Re: Loadbin rubberizing removal
Toluolene is the chemical to use. Protea Chemicals is the supplier.
First grind down with 16 grit sanding disks. Remove last thin part with Toluolene. Sticky and nasty job!!!
Try the tyre remould places, they *might* be able to help.
Anyway, stock up on the beer before you start, even invite some friends over to help with 'a small jobbie'....

Re: Loadbin rubberizing removal
Best way to remove rubberize coating is dry ice. The freezing cold shrinks the rubber and makes it brittle comes off very qyuckly with little elbow grease
