2.8GD 6 engine clean

Post by RonS »

I have a 2.8 GD 6 Hilux DC. I have just done a long and dusty trip on dirt roads for a few 1000 km. The engine compartment is full of dust.
Can I just hose down the engine or would that do some damage?
I hosed down the engine of my older KZTE many times with no bad effects.
Thanks, Ron

No problem hosing it down, just don't do it if the motor is hot.

I also wouldn't recommend a pressure washer, although I have done that but my pressure washer has a pressure setting where I can turn it right down.

If it's just dusty, then a hose down will do. If it's got oil / grime residue, then an engine cleaner will get rid of that (Midas has a fairly cheap but effective one - think it's a house brand). After that it's a good thing to spray it with paraffin or a bit of oil mixed into petrol or diesel so that you don't get corrosion or rust forming.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

A note also to be taken. Try not to spray on the electronics or plug connections. Water gets into the plugs and makes contact with the positive and negative points. When the ignition is switched on and power goes through some damage could occur. I think the GD 6 has more electronics than the KZTE.
A good practice will be to let the engine compartment dry properly before starting.
