Botswana trip in June 2010

Post by SuidWes »

Hi All,

We have been planning our first trip to Botswana for some time now and with all the price hikes it looks like it will have to be now or never…. :eh: We have booked and paid and the basic route planned is from Thuli anti-clockwise past Khama Rhino Sanc, Kubu Island, CKGR, Kang, and back to JHB. We will spend 14 days in total in Bots leaving JHB on the 13th of Jun 2010. Three vehicles in total and one towing a trailer.

I need some advice/input on two things:

1. Should we be worried about Malaria on the above route :?:
2. Would you take a 4 month old baby on such a trip :?: Obviously we will only consider this if the baby is healthy and strong :problem: And another couple joining us will take their one year old daughter with.....

Any other advice welcome

1) Maybe (Malaria can be really dangerous)
2) 4 months? I wouldn't. Long hours on the road, risk of sickness etc.

Bots ia already expensive, it's not going to change for the next few years....

Thanks Guys

We initially decided to cancel the trip and then sort of changed our minds after doing a trip through the Drakensberg and Eastern Cape in September last year with friends with a 6 week old baby. The little one was fine and we had a great trip.

Agree, but we managed to book some sites in CKGR that have not been privatised yet (in transition) an P30 pppn is a lot better than 150 pppn - but I hear you.

I suppose leaving mom and son at home is an option - We will decide closer to the time :|

Malaria is not so much of a problem in Botswana simply because of the very low population density.

Mosquitoes only fly max a few Km's and so if you are in CKGR where there are no people the chances of getting bitten by an infected Mosquitoe are very low.

Mozambique on the other hand is the opposite, and dont get Malaria it really sucks!

4 month old baby, not sure mate, if he gets malaria will be very serious. Tough call!

According to this site we should be fine as our route falls outside the risk area - Can one trust this map :?: See: http://www.traveldoctor.info/trip/result.3.46.1.html

Jaco
