The group as I have it to date:- A lot is a repeat of what has gone on over the pages but to save you having to re-read them all, a short summary as things stand as I know them

1, Val
2. Zepplin
3. Truckin
4. Thys
5. Johannes van die See
6. Stubsie
7. Hoppy
8. Roy
9. Toybox
10. Mr B
11. Leon
12. Shaun
13. Gideon
14. Tersmit
15. J Pierre
16. Charl
17. Wilko
18. Olaf (tbc)
19. Louis (Rolbos)
20. Koos (Keller)
21. Serle
22. Pieter
23. Nick and Berna
24. Triton
25. Herman and Charmaine

Boetie, Stubs and myself are going through tomorrow afternoon to Tierkloof to camp for the weekend... you are welcome to join us...

For information about the pre-trail briefing... here is the link...

viewtopic.php?f=63&t=1526" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The first 12 vehicles to arrive and pay their trail fee, and that are wanting to go early, will leave after their pre-trail briefing...leaving by 8.30... That is group A

Those arriving after will be able to enjoy a breakfast and coffee and then a pre-trail briefing, they will be leaving between 9.30 - 10.30... that is giving group A a chance to get well ahead... :beg: :beg: :beg: I understand that from the road we can see if the first group have got through the first obstacle which can take time...

Anyone wanting to camp on the Sat is welcome to join us.. it costs R50 per site and accommodates 6 people and R20 per head on that site, ie the 6 people share the R50 basic cost, but since you have paid R20 per head to drive the trail you don't have to pay the additional R20 for camping... I know it is a bit confusing

Trail fee R100 per vehicle and R20 per person in the vehicle, Please make sure you have that with you when you arrive...

For those that are not rushing back home and would like to stay for a braai and a kuier, please bring along some wood, your eats and drinks...
There is NO wood available at the trail...

From the pics I can't see 'kids' playing near the obstacle, safety is always an issue be it a recovery or driving through an obstacle.

There are two sides to all stories let's hear the other

In my opinion, the spectators were a safe distance form the obstacle, however the driver changed direction without warning, causing everyone to everyone to scatter.

Hi guys, I have tried to refrain from commenting, but with certain people attempting to make light of a potentially life threatening incident, I will make my opinion public in open forum. Firstly Val, besides this incident, myself and my family greatly appreciate your efforts and time put in to organising this event... simply awesome!

I was the first person in the line of fire in the incident, had I not made a very swift move I would have been seriously injured, as well as all who were standing there. To claim that they were unaware of the spectators position also holds no water, simply because both the driver and co-driver stood in the same place before the incident observing & taking pictures of other vehicles. After the incident I refrained from commenting immediately, took a few minutes to steady myself, I conferred with Thys, and then calmy(as I could) went over to Koos, and said that such actions were unacceptable, and that he needs to cool it. I also told him clearly that these are family events, and that safety is first and of paramount importance, as Thys said repeatedly at the trail briefing. Had someone been injured the repercussions would have been horrendous. Personally, to hear "it's ok, no one got hurt" is simply not good enough. If a driver has the intention of being "rof" it is his responsiblity to foreworn spectators, we cannot read the drivers' mind! I stress again, these have always been and will always be family events. I am a aware that a safety incident report is under way, and ask that those with video and picture evidence please contact Pieter or Thys to supply it to them! I will refrain from commenting further until the report has been compiled and made public.

Hi. Just arrived back from my weekend at Tierkloof.... I am aware of "the incident" and if you don't mind, would prefer to comment on a separate post, so as not to muddy my report of what was an otherwise fantastic weekend....

To all of you that attended thanks, so very much for helping to make the Hilux club the best 4x4 club by far, and for that great spirit(bar the incident) that is always evident at these events... I always look forward to driving a trail with you.... (and for me, there were lots of ponies in my gift weekend - reference to a previous post).... The weather was perfect, just a bit chilly in the evenings around the campfire, but nothing that loads of layers of clothing and huge fires could'nt eliminate..

Thanks to the group leaders, Allan and Thys.. for once again being available to lead the groups... I'm always happy when you attend the events because of your expertise and experience.

Tierkloof was a good challenge, and demanded some good concentration and somewhat careful manoeuvring at quite a few places.... nothing that our Hilux's and the Hilux friendly Jeep, could'nt manage... Those without difflocks had their work cut out for them having to use their momentum to get through some of the obstacles. Those that have driven the trail before have said that it was more challenging than previously with the recent rains.

Yes I do have photo's and as soon as I have unpacked my bakkie and found my camera will load some...

Once again thanks guys and girls for a great weekend.

As the event co-ordinator and organizer for the day, I am sorry that you never felt it necessary to discuss the incident and the events surrounding it, and your dissatisfaction about it, with me, and that you chose to discuss it on the open forum... Having done this gives me and others the opportunity to respond to your comments..

As you know I was not in your group so did not witness the incident, but I did receive a complaint, and it was NOT from people that had children present... but people that have extensive 4x4 experience both with our club and other groups. The complaint I received was that your driving was reckless, as they were not aware of your intended route and that you came out of the obstacle at a speed catching them unexpectedly.. I then approached Thys as the leader of your group, and was told that the incident had been dealt with... So I continued to enjoy the rest of the day unaware that this storm was brewing....

In the club events I've attended, I have never seen parents putting either themselves or their children at risk, because I would certainly have said something to them about it...

With respect to the vehicle in our group that took the same route as you... we had all driven through the obstacle and those that were'nt re-doing it had parked their vehicles to watch, we were aware of the intended route the vehicle was taking because it had been discussed beforehand and were out of the way when the vehicle made its exit..

I can only assume the comment about this being a fan club was made because you are angry... I certainly don't see any harm in a group of Hilux owners and non Hilux owners driving trails together being good friends and having a lot of fun on a day when we put our vehicles through their paces.. in fact I see it as a bonus that we enjoy our get togethers as we do..

The only thing I am sorry about is that this incident has taken the route it has, when it should have just been resolved without all this debate and unpleasantness..

I am not aware of any further measures being taken, but maybe someone will enlighten me...

All I can say is I had a great weekend, and to those wonderful people that made it that... Thanks once again... and please don't let this dampen all the wonderful GTG's we will be having in the future..

I All

I would also like to say thanks for the great weekend, I enjoyed the trail more than my previous visit to Tierkloof and as always I enjoyed seeing old faces.

Thanks to you Val for organizing and the hospitality towards my cousin and friends that joint our event for the first time, they also enjoyed it very much and are very keen on joining the club now that they've seen how much fun it can be.

Thanks to Allan for being a excellent team leader and to Werner leading our group, you both did an excellent job and made the day so much more special by showing us the hidden cave.

Thanks to Pieter, Allan, Stubs, Boetie, Val and Suzette that made the camp fire chats so enjoyable to.

It's a pity we did not get to spend allot of time together with that guys from group 1, lots of nice people there to whom I always enjoy having a chat with, I must say, it almost felt as if we were two completely separate groups each on our own outing, not good but unfortunately it couldn't have been organised otherwise, there were just to many vehicles.

Sadly we are also facing an incident issue now, which could have been resolved in a much better way.
My only comment about this is that we should learn from this instead of throwing mud around, this will resolve nothing as it involves "men" whom we all know have some level of "Ego" and "Pride" issues. I'm not pointing fingers, I'm a man and know the extent of my own ego and pride I sometimes try to protect.

Is short, we are all responsible for what happened, drivers should make their planned actions known, team leaders should assess the safety of the drivers intentions and handle spectators accordingly, and spectators should at all time try to be more observant and informed about what is about to happen.

This incident boils down to one thing, bad communication
The "Speel Gat" is not called that name for nothing, that is the one area on the trail where we are allowed to play a bit, and if play looks like recklessness it may only be that one person plays harder than the next.
I like playing myself and I was called reckless as well, but my intentions was discussed before I got into my Hilux and executed
the same stunt as Koos.
No hard feelings towards anyone

Lets see this as a good learning curve and take the things we learned from it to our next GTG.

Thanks for a super weekend Team Hilux

Thanks Val your efforts in arranging the weekend away for our club members.

Regarding the incident, I was not there to see it first hand but did see footage of the event. The nature of our sport is inherently dangerous. It is each and everyone participating, be it the driver or the spectators, responsibility to be safe. Parents are responsible for keeping their selves and their children out of harms way. The driver needs to do the obstacles in a responsible manner in such a way not to deliberately put peoples lives in danger.

So at each obstacle the spectators should stand in such a location that should the vehicle go out of control, they are not in harms way. This includes recoveries where you have to stand a distance away should the recovery gear fail. The driver should also take note and be aware of the spectators. If he plans to deviate from the standard route he should make sure that the spectators are aware of his intentions.

According the footage (unfortunately no spectator could be seen due to the angle at which it was taken) the driver of the vehicle did not steer his vehicle to the left (where I'm guessing the spectators were). He was a mere passenger at this stage as the vehicle kicked to the left. At this point he needed to power out of the situation as if he backed of the power the vehicle would have probably slid back and to the side and caused it to roll over.

I don't think anyone was at fault here and I am just glad we can look back at this event and learn out of it with out someone getting hurt.

What we should take out of this is that spectators should always be aware that a vehicle can get out of control and head in an unintended direction. So stand at a viewing point which give you ample time to get out of the way should this happen or stand where the vehicle could never go. To the driver, make sure you know the obstacle before driving it. If you intend deviating from the route, make it known to all spectators and make sure they clear the area where you intend heading. Also make sure that you can maintain control of your vehicle in the obstacle and that if there is the possibility of you loosing control, you do not put peoples lives in danger.

Any driver of a vehicle has a loaded weapon in his hand. It is a dangerous machine and should be treated as such. If you run over a pedestrian, big or small, you are responsible no matter if it was your fault or not.

I agree, I'm over it now. Thanks Cassie...

I have found my camera and will start loading photo's soon...

I agree with Johannes that it was tough splitting the group...but it was necessary with the number of vehicles on the day...

Maybe next time we should all stay afterwards so that we can chat to one another and discuss the trail... even though we left 2 hours after the first group we arrived, I was told half an hour after them, but that group was larger than ours.. In the end we had 21 vehicles on the trai for the dayl, the first group had 14 vehicles and we had 8...

Mmm think next time we have to split the group we must appoint a fire maker in the first group so that when we arrive we just have to throw our meat on the fire..

Ek sit my naam op vir Boegoeberg as eerste bespreking .. !!! Organiseerders, onthou net asb.!! So,bespreek vroegtydig en wees dankbaar as jy plek kry. Louis

Thanx Val. You did an excellent job. Splitting the group on this trail worked well and you handled it very well. I preferred it this way than waiting ages for a stream of vehicles to clear an obstacle.

As for the little incident, to me it is not about who is right and who were wrong. To me it is about what we learned from this and how we handle the next event. Luckily nobody got hurt and it was a great wake up call to warn us to pay more attention to our spectators.

Thanx for all the people who attended. I did not get time to chat to you all or meet you all but it was a a great sight to see so many Hilux enthusiasts all together.

To the guys around the fire last night, a great Thanx, it was the relaxing therapy I needed.

Sorry, I could not take many pictures. That is one of the disadvantages of going in an all Hilux group with more IFS'ses than SFA's, you just nether stop at any obstacles, you just keep on driving because nobody battles. So there were not many opportunities for photographs, and I was driving second from last.

Those guys who did Tierkloof with us in 2009, GO DO IT AGAIN. I rated Tierkloof as boring in 2009 but now it is a very nice route. It is still a rather easy route but it is not the picnic drive it use to be 3 years ago. I did not feel like going again, but after this weekend I will be there again.

Here is what I have.

Thanks Val for arranging this event, I enjoyed it as well as my family. Pitty we could not braai with you guys, had to get home to watch the Stomers getting beaten up. I guess it was a sign when Thys lost his flag in a bush as we went down the mountain that they are going to loose.

I am going to skip Boegoeberg, maybe next time. I need to take it easy and get more experience before I drive that one.

What grade is Tierkloof, just wondered as this was my 1st time in the mountains.

Thanks Thys and Brenton for the tips and advice, I learned quite a few things this weekend.

Hey Gideon, it was a pleasure having you along, must agree on Jono's Hilex, that beast is simply unstoppable, it (in conjunction with the driver) made even the most challenging obstacle look like a grade 1! Hopefully the next trail has something to test this beastie! I definitely need to invest in a decent set of rock sliders before Boegoeberg! And possibly a new set so tyres. Tierkloof was quite hard on my ageing BF's, the sidewall scuffs don't look to good!

Again thanks to everyone that contributed to making this another successful event... now come on... where the pics?

Okay so it is difficult for me to think camera and photo's when I am driving and on my own on the trail... and as Pieter said we did'nt have many photo opportunities because we managed without many stops.... Must say my 'Grand Lady' SFA 2.4 managed extremely well in the group of IFS 2.7's and SFA V6 engines...and made it through every obstacle without a hitch.... So my handful of photo's

After a cold night camping with Boetie, Jc, Stubs and myself the vehicles started arriving..

I have a new name for Roofer aka Charl... His name is now Determined Charl.... The route recommended difflock and he does'nt have one, and in spite of that insisted on not driving the alternate options, so with steely determination he conquered the step without difflock

Once again Determined Charl refused the easy option and tackled it head on

Louis of course was determined to do it both up and then to drive down it again... Happily he chose not to reverse back up it as well, had me going for a while..
