Trip Report - Atlantis Dunes - 06 Feb 2010

Post by ThysdJ »

What a wonderful day. I want to compliment the group on their wonderful cameraderie and team spirit and I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as Willem and I did.

It started out a slightly cloudy windy day. We had a full compliment of 13 vehicles with only Dino still missing in action. He'll probably make it in time for tomorrow's outing. We missed you Dino!! The sand was extremely soft and the edges of the dunes were sharp and unpredictable, as I came to realise very quickly on the very first little dune I crossed. Before I even knew what was happening I had Kaspaas 4 wheels in the air, nose pointing roughly in the direction of Mars. Coming down on the other side was quite a bumpy affair, and the steering damper made contact with the sump. Luckily no serious damage was done, and after a phone call to the guys that know about these things, we could continue.

At the Badprop I gave the new guys some pointers about tyre pressures and momentum and soon everybody was in and out of the hole kicking up sand along the way. As per usual Bees in his 4x2 was first togo in and once again showed what he and his Hilux are capable of. With the sand being so soft the steeper sides became quite a challenge as there is no real run-up and once you get close to the top there is zero traction, which means if you weren't carrying anough momentum you are going to end up doing a "Meerkat" (popping your head out of the hole).

Ismail dropped in and had some difficulties getting the right line out the hole again, but with some guidance he managed to get a pull-away of note and with a hop, skip and a jump his 4Y (carb-job) at 4000 rev came flying out the top. The size of the smile on his face was undescribable! From there on there was no stopping this fella, he was up and down and revving and spinning tyres and taking on bigger and better challenges all the time! Well done!

From there we went dune charging. Olaf (JoeyDalton) in his 2.4 N/A Diesel S/C Hilux LWB tried endlessly to make it to the top, but the little diesel just could not get enough oomf together to take it all the way to the top. He was taking longer and longer run-ups, eventually almost ending up at KFC in Malmesbury on the last run. This man is a good sport and he was laughing all the way as he kept on trying. The Energizer Bunny can come take some lessons here.

At the Horseshoe we did the normal figure-8 running up and down and here Jaco (Turbo) in the Sprinkaan impressed us all with the way he threw the 4Y around the bends and made it all the way to the top. The wind was getting a bit hectic, and I wanted to get all the guys toigether for the lucky draw so we decided to head towards the "Big Dune" where there was some shelter.

I decided that 2 guys had to be rewarded for their guts and the way they approached the day and therefore I called out Olaf and Ismail to come get their prizes for "Deursettingsvermoee"/Tenacity. Well deserved guys

Everybody went home with a little something at the end of the day, courtesy of Hilux4x4.co.za.

As far as I could tell, everybody had a ball, from Brett's little one on his sand-board all the way to Johan B who never really attempted anything but everytime I saw him he bailed out of a different vehicle! I hope you guys are not as sun-scorched and parched as I am despite applying copious amounts of sun-block, I think is is the wind and the glare from the sand that did it.

Thanks to our sponsors for the hand-outs, and thanks guys, it was a memorable outing.

PS Please be somewhat patient, I am in the process of resizing and uploading the pics, and will post them as soon as they are up. In the mean time though, please add your comments and pictures so long.

Thanks guys for a fun day at the dunes - I've learned a lot from all of you.
It was really nice to finally meet some of you okes in real life.

I must compliment Bees on going "where no 4x2 has gone before"

Thys, THE country looks great! Wish we were there. Daai mooi wit sand, daai mooiste Kaap!!!

Thanks to all involved, it was another great day in the dunes. To those who left early, you missed a great shootout between the Jeep and Toyota boys at the braai dune. I have new found respect for Prado's and Sahara's.

I have to admit, I've never seen a vehicle climb a dune like that Sahara. That thing was truly amazing, from basically zero run up it hits the dune and actually gains speed before halfway up. The Prado's were also impressive but I'm sure it's the Sahara's power to weight ratio that gives it the edge (and that fancy fandangled electronic 4x4 system). I still wouldn't buy one ahead of a Toyota though. It's a case of horses for courses.

Hallo

Good morning-
And thank you very much everbody especially Thys, for making me feel welcome and showing me a trick or three.

As for the driving- the 2.4 donkeydiesel ground the Hilux to a halt on the higher dunes but not my enthusiasm or fun!

I will definitely be back(for more!)!

Olaf... lets pull that diesel donkey out and fit a 2.2(4Y) or 2.4(22R) petrol... or if finance allows... a 7MGE... or a Lexus V8... but at minimum the 4Y will already be a nice upgrade on the 2.4D... the only benefit that engine has is fuel consumption and decent engine mounts!

Yes....thanks guys for the lekka day....learned quit a bit about how to drive with a auto box in the sand.

One thing I can say is....I missed my Hilux in the sand....now I have to learn all over again.

Morne....thanks for the help there on the back roads!

I would never have believed that a 2.7i Hilux can get a Cruiser out of that spot of bother if I haven't seen\experienced it myself...once again...thanks.

Well-I use the bakkie daily for my business, the 4x4 side of it is just an added bonus, and I don't need it to be fast.Fuel consumption is far more important to me than its ability in the dunes. If that ever changes, I'll be very happy to change this motor for something noisy that's got horns!

Joke was, I was exploring the dunes till about 4pm after everyone left then wanted to leave, I still got a old verion of T4A on the gps, and it showed me in the direction of another gate, being addiment about wanting to leave in the same one we entered I drove around for about an hour then got lost, lol, and then followed the gps route out, then afterwards I realised the gate at which we entered was not on the T4A version I have, but none the less had much fun.

PS. if anyone wants a tag along for a trail or something sooner in the interim I'm up for it.

I would never have believed that a 2.7i Hilux can get a Cruiser out of that spot of bother if I haven't seen\experienced it myself...once again...thanks.

I think I would've kicked his butt in the Galaxie but this time he raced a Chev SS so there was NO chance for me :!:
Otherwise the car is straight and not broken so it was a good 2 days racing.

I've watched many of his races since the seventees, he has always been in a class of his own.
The only cars i've ever seen him fail in was front wheel drives, but he admitted it's not his style.

It would be ideal if we can do about 3 AD trips a year as a Club. This will ensure that the guys experience the sand surface in all different conditions i.e.

High Summer: Very soft and powdery
Mid Winter: Wet, firm and lots of traction
Late Autumn: Sort of in between.

This will give the guys the opportunity to broaden their sand-driving skills-horizon and show them how to handle the different surfaces, different tyre-pressures, longer/shorter run-ups and the other challenges that sand driving has to offer.

And there you were thinking sand is sand is sand...
