Transkei trip 13/12/2016

Post by AM Racing »

Hi guys,

I've planned a family drive for tomorrow.

Meet at the pont in Kei Mouth 7.30
Depart Transkei side 8.30
Tea 10.00
Lunch at the Jacaranda wreck 13.00
Return to East London

The trail has bush so expect a scratch or three
There are octacles said high as a 4 if you so choose but they can be bypassed

You will need:
a rear locker or impeccable driving skill
A packed lunch and snacks
Sweeeeeeeeets. For the local children that we drive by
The R5 toll past the school
R160 return for the ferry or a loooong drive back
You will need a permit from the department of environmental affairs

Short notice I know bit we want to be back in time for the evening festivities

Should there not be enough vehicles we will do a trip closer to town

Yep, I thought about that as well Jurgen. Also the Kei Mouth area will be quite busy tomorrow - hundreds of people (mostly youngsters) go and spend new years on the beaches there and it gets pretty rowdy (might be some not-so-sober drivers and some unguided missiles along the dirt road). The pont across the Kei will also be busy with queues of vehicles waiting to cross.

However we will still be doing a local trail near "De Kraal" tomorrow and anyone is welcome to join. We will gather in the parking at the Abbotsford Sasol service station from 7.30am and leave by 7.45am (8.00am latest). There are some rough sections on the trail, so no soft-roaders .... ground clearance a must.

Post here or let either Dylan or myself know if you will be joining us so that we know if we must wait for you if you are running late to meet at Sasol.

So just to know what's happening ....

Tomorrow - trail near De Kraal
Next weekend - Day trip along T/kei coast to the Jacaranda wreck.
The weekend after that - (tentatively) a trail through the valley below the Nahoon Dam.

Specific details will follow in due course. Time to get those transfer boxes whining! :D:

It was a sweltering day, (31° in the shade, blistering sun and hardly a breeze), but Dylan wanted to pull the shaft just to make sure it was the shaft and not the diff. Snapped clean off, so OK to travel home with no metal bits floating about in diff to cause further damage.

Lots of fun guys I done it on my own in the Fortuner. We done it on the 20th of December 2016. We had good fun squeezing past the branches. We started just before Trennerys and finished up at the Jacaranda. Took us a good few hours. The water fall is not really flowing heavy but the rest is all as well.

I seen that Rangie with all the pipe work at the green lantern. Should have asked for advice lol. I'll be back soon to do some more. I had hands down the most dirty 4x4 between lei and Morgan's bay. We traveled that dirt road between the two a lot.

Hmmm .... I was just looking back at this thread and thought that some might be wondering why there were no pics or report posted for the Jacaranda outing.

There was a good reason for that, one that was a real disappointment for me - I never even got off the tar. We had met as planned and headed out up the N2 - just before the Kei Mouth turn off there was a severe vibration coming from the prop-shaft. We just had it reconned a couple of weeks before and the brand new centre bearing was poked .... the rubber carrier had melted away completely! Molten rubber was smoking and dripping from the assembly. The bearing itself must have been too 'tight' and with the highway speeds it over-heated.

There was no way the Dog was going to do a trail, so we hauled the prop off and I made my way back home with drive power on the front diff while the rest of the guys carried on to do the trail and had fun.

No one took any pics that I know of.
