CAD model of a hilux

Hi All

Does anyone out there have a CAD model of a LWB hilux?

I am saving up to buy a single cab 4x4 :D end of this year or beginning of next year. I am designing and building my own overlanding canopy to be finished by then, but I only have approximate measurements for the loadbox and cab etc. Also, does anyone have suggestions for what size the canopy should be and tips for drawers, boxes, fridges, etc. Any tips will be welcomed!

Thanks!
Jacob

Hi Jacob

I would suggest finding the best scale drawing you can and importing it into the cad program you are using and then tracing it and scaling it accordingly. Only a few measurements would be needed to make sure that the scale was correct, for instance, the load box length and width, which Im sure someone here with a LWB can help with. If you do find one please let me know as well. I have a D/C and wouldn't mind having a CAD drawing of it to play around with and help the guys with measurements or design space etc.

Maybe once done you would like to share your designs with the guys?
What cad program are you using? I spend all day working with Microstation.

Good luck

Now you guys have started something! I would love to get a CAD of a Hilux DC, SFA & IFS.

But first I need to get a CAD program.

I will be following this thread with the utmost interest!

Hi Scooter

I am using Inventor Professional 9 - it is 3d modelling software and works quite lekker for me, considering I am an electronic engineer. I am doing the whole design in 3d and I can create my own basic 3d model based on 2d sketches. I was hoping to get a full 3d model from Toyota, but I don't forsee anything happening from that side... I quote from their email:

"Dear Mr. Jacob Venter
We acknowledge receipt of your e-mail.
Please contact your nearest dealership regarding your inquiry.
Kind Regards

Customer Care Advisor
Toyota South Africa"

I will, for sure, share the design when finished. Hopefully it will be soon!

I use Bentley Microstation with Triforma and Structural incorporated into it, also 3D. Its a fantastic program but as with all CAD programs it is job specific.

F_D, I'll PM you about a program if you like.

Hi Scooter,

Please do!

J,

I have messed a bit with TinyCAD, which is a free electronics CAD program. For the price, it is excellent

I also use Invertor Pro.....works very well for special purpose machine design.

Which hilux are you looking for, some designer friends of mine where involved with the Vigo Hilux body line and I can probably get hold of that in 3D.

J and Zantus, are you guys able to share those programs? I only use a structural one and wouldn't mind toying with a mechanical one.

Hi Zantus

I am looking for the (I think) 2000 to 2005 shape, single cab, LWB, raised body. I will appreciate anything you can get hold of :D - my current design is based on measurements taken with a 3m measuring tape at the automark dealers... It will work but I cannot see what it will look like (which is an important part :) ). I have seen the newest model for sale on the web (for $100) and for some American variations, but nothing similar what we have here.

The closest one I could find:
http://www.3dcadbrowser.com/preview.aspx?ModelCode=3589

Inventor is bit big to share... Big in size (1cd) and big in wallet...

Jacob, I hear you. Microstation is rather large as well.

I have searched a bit but also come up with nothing that doesn't cost a pretty penny.

Sorry, I'm also not sharing my Inventor:
because it is expensive and I forked out to buy it
I'm not giving away the only tool that provides my income
IT'S ILLEGAL!!!!

P.S. I told the local Autodesk reseller about this web site, because he's also a hilux owner.....so watch what you guys say about illegally sharing packages....you might just get busted.....

I hear you zantus but you do get 30 day trials that are perfectly legal and enable you to decide wether you would in future like to buy the package. It just means that generally you can't save your work and sometimes not all the commands and tools work but you get the just of it.

Anyway, back to the hunt for a 3D Hilux model.

Hi.

I also use Inventor, it would work for a project like that! Maybe we should have a competition - the guy who makes the best CAD model of a Hilux wins a new Cruiser or something?????

If only there where more hours in a day!

Although I totally agree that one should purchase all your software legally , I have to add that I don`t see anything wrong with it if somebody uses a cracked version of Autocad to play around with at home as long as you don`t use it to generate an income. One of the reasons Autocad is so popular today is the fact that it could be cracked so easily and everybody could play with it at home so when they needed to purchase design software Autocad was their first choice because they were already familiar with it. I am not saying everybody should go out and get illegal software, I am just trying to say that for this exercise I can`t see why somebody should fork out thousands of rands and license fees just to experiment in their spare time.

And I am sure BSA will "bust" a big company how operates on illegal software, but somebody playing at home in his study  personally have never heard of anybody who has been prosecuted for anything like this.

And I agree with FB if you do have problem with using cracked software to "experiment" there are loads of FREE software packages available that can give just as much functionality as the big overpriced expensive ones. I feel that for the "bigger" ones you pay for the support you expect more than for the actual software that you get. Even the most advanced users never get to use more than halve the available features on these packages.

Jaws, sorry man, only saw this now. Must have got lost over the months.
I don't work for Hatch no. I am at ATD (Anglo technical Division).

I have the model that is in my signature but it is in 3Ds MAX and I need 3D studio MAX to convert it to any other form.
So if you know any one that can convert the file type to dwg or dgn (we work on microstation) that would be great.

How many guys are working on Cad/xsteel/inventor/revit or similar products? How many mechanical designers, draughtsmen, tracers, cad operators, etc do we have on our site?

Anyone doing steel detailing?

I work with Microstation V8, about to upgrade to XM.

We dont do our own detailing as yet but I do know that strucad is on the cards or maybe xsteel.

Hi guys,

I haven't read all the posts so not sure if this has been discussed but I think you would have much better luck with "Google sketchup". I've been working on CAD for 16 years and it's a nice program but initially requires some training and assistance from experienced ppl. Google sketch up is a 3D program Google bought a few years back. anyone can teach themselves in a day. The student version is free and the tutorials are extremely easy to grasp. It was designed to be a "pick up and go" program for anyone from any profession. It became a world wide hit about 10 years ago so everyone in the industry got into it and started building all sorts of 3D models with it. These are constantly uploaded to "Sketchup warehouse" so anyone can can find just about any model they want there for free. You can also find cranes, tanks, houses, Ferraris etc etc. We designed a morgue a few years back and one of the guys in the office even found some disturbingly detailed bodies. So you can download the bakkie you have and then build your camper to suit. As these are uploaded by Jo public I strongly suggest you double check all relevant measurements before starting your design.

The reason I resurrected this is because I'm planning on building a DIY canopy for my Xtracab and I wanted some software to design it on. Also, goodluck finding a model of an Xtracab :/

Hi Ed.

Give sketchup a try. I ran a search on hiluxs and attached the link above. There were dozens that I saw. Also try search for foreign hilux names like Tacoma, used in the states. If you still can't find an extra cab you can download a double cab and change it to the same size and look as your xtra cab.

Thanks Rusti. I looked at the Sketchup warehouse. Searched for Hilux and Tundra. Didn't find any Xtracabs though. Perhaps I should chop the double cab model like you said.

Re: CAD model of a hilux

by Rusti
Ja it's not too difficult to do. But if you havent worked on sketchup before you may struggle a bit.

Maybe start designing the canopy first to get the hang of sketchup and then try chop the model of the xtra cab. You can design the whole canopy without the bakkie model, just using measurements from your bakkies tray and roof height etc but it would be great to see it on the model of the bakkie. Then you can tweak your canopy model if need be.

When choosing a model to download just be carefull of their file size. Some guys don't do great jobs with their models and you end up downloading massive files that are later a pain to work on because you end up struggling with all of its previous problems just so you can get your piece done correctly.

Good advice, thanks!

One thing that's on my mind is the angles of the slope of the sides with relation to the cab. (if you look from the front it mustn't stick out and cause drag). What gradients do alucabs usually have?

Re: CAD model of a hilux

Posted: Thu May 12, 2016 1:59 pm
by Rusti
I'm not sure of the gradients but it may be worthwhile to cut a piece of hardboard to the shape you are thinking of as a template to achieve the best gradient to suit your bakkie. You can just hold it against the back of your xtracab with something, look at it from the front and adjust the lines to best suit what you want to achieve. Then go to sketchup and start. If you do find an xtracab on sketchup or chop a double cab I would still make a hard board template. You just don't know if that model is 25mm out.. Then you are buggered..

yea I hear you. what i'll do is design the canopy by itself using measurements that i've confirmed are correct. then just for aesthetics i'll place it on the vehicle model.

what makes for even more of a technical challenge is that i'm not making it. my friend in N-Cape is. so he'll need to find someone there with an Xtracab of similar year to test it on

Ed SketchUp is easy enough to pick.

Not that easy to amend models, when you start out.

So plan to do 2 or 3 quick SketchUp's just to get the hang of it ....

as for the camber of the cab - With Elders we deliberately chose a different camber, because I wanted more width at the top. As long as it has some camber the final product works. Just dont build a square brick. If you do follow the cab lines the usable space inside the canopy is too restricted .... each builder has to find a balance they are happy with.

Hi Guys, Found this thread while looking for the exact same thing... Found an awsome model, and is available in many formats:

https://hum3d.com/3d-models/toyota-hilux-extracab-2012/

A little pricey for me at the moment, so will keep looking, but for those of you with the bucks, I think this model should make for a nice base to design from.

Thanks Bernhard! Has anybody bought some of these models before? I was looking at one but at 75 USD its not worth while option for experimental design.

Will probably continue with importing a 2d sketch.
