build your own snorkel
I used 63mm PVC pipe to build a Hilux Snorkel,The pipe and bending of it cost about R210.00.The bending can also be done at home.Fill the pipe with wet sand, plug the ends with paper.Put the pipe in boiling water or oil.Bend the pipe to the desired shaape and let it cool of.
Drill hole in body, drill bit cost R200.00.The intake head is from donaldson cost R290.00.
Here is some pictures

Bosvark,
Welcome to "our" forum!
Great job, and even better price :)
I have rotated your first picture, took me a while to realise it was on its side - but then I'm not the brightest kid on the block

Welcome and great DIY job.
Could you explain what you have done for water seperation due to rain etc? Are there just drainage holes in the bottom and if so wouldn't you get water inside when wadding?

Re: built your own snorkel
I drilled some holes in the head, and the existing airfilter box got a drainage plug for water. So i home I can handle all the water that is coming in with driving in the rain.

Re: build your own snorkel
Thanks. Bennie Ive still got the Landy. It is/was a project , using it at the moment to take building rubble/ garden gemors to the dump. I am the proud owner of a SFA 2.2 D/C since Wednesday. That was the day when I bought it from Niel. He is still crying. I will be looking after his baby for now.
I do like the Hilux a 1000 times more that the Landy. I must add Ill rather drive a old beat up Landy off road than be one that owns a brand new vehicle "irespective of the make" and stay on tar the whole time.

Re: build your own snorkel
Congrats on your purchase, at least now you have a reliable 4x4, so next time the Landy leave you stranded, you do not have to spend a lot of money trying to fix it, you can convert it into a garden refuge trailer by building an A frame and pulling it behind the Lux. Maybe we should consider changing your forum name to something more appropriate like Luxy or somethings ;)

Yo Geoff ... maak mens jaloers as ander manne sulke mooi goed kan SELF bou... apies soos ek moet maar opdok. [I O W: Nice job. Well done, perfectly executed)
There was a thread not long ago onther nIssan forum - one of the guys also built his own SNORKEL.
Only diff - he obtained a breather box at the scrapyard from a Dyna diesel, and fitted that on the snorkel's tip .... "pre cleans" the air, filters the water ... and it was very cheap.
Just a thought.
Thanx for the directions on self bending of PVC ... now I can tackle the Terrano ... he-he-he... Dwergie klap my bo-oor die laerskool se dakke ..

Nice one Johan :!:
Will be doing the same shortly!
I saw a similar DIY job on the Yellow ARB Nissan Patrol at 4x4 Mega World in Paarden Eiland, but his job doesn't appear to be as nicely finished as yours :!:
Well Done man :!: , Thanks for the post

Hi;
Busy building it. The inlet used is a Donaldson Ram Inlet Hood. Part number GSH00-8149. For those interested. Go to their website to locate a dealer close to you.

Re: build your own snorkel
Now this is a project I have been threatening to tackle for nearly a year now, just never get down to it. Wanted it for cool and clean air, not wanting to ride deep water. ... I hate wet carpets...
BUT
Last weekend it had to happen, went about 4 inches too deep and drowned my engine. Bent con rods, cracked head and burst water pump (according to the insurance assessor)... ..
R500 home made snorkel versus 15K Diesel engine replacement.... You decide... Even if I had a piece of toilet pipe sticking out the bonnet, I would have been happy. Now I am without a car for a month while they fix :x

Eish... sorry for your misfortune. May this be a lesson to other waders :)
David, did you try and restart while still in the water?

Re: build your own snorkel
NO!!! The water made a clear "clunk" noise as it stopped the engine under the water. Water does not compress as easy as air ... I think I got my damage there already. Microscopic bend of the con rod, enough to drop the compression so that ignition no longer tales place at low temp.
I got him up to dry ground, turned out the glo plugs and cleared the water by turning the starter for a period of time. Made my next mistake at that point as I should have turned the motor by hand the first two revs as the speed on the starter would have been too much. Only realized that after the water escaping from the #4 cylinder popped a hole through my bonnet insulation
Other "knockon" problem seems to be a water pump that suddenly sprung a leak .
End result will be either total recon or replacement.
SNORKEL of what ever description, no matter how home made it may look, would have saved me a bunch of money. and all we now have been discussing would be the smelly carpets
