Nice!

Any non standard work to the engine, ie. balancing, gasflowing, oversize pistons or cams?

Thanks Thabo. No I have not done any mods to the motor yet, I just want to get it finished and running at the moment. Will be looking at getting a spare set of heads that I can fit inserts for the valves so that it can run on unleaded fuel. Will maybe do other mods later. The crank I had machined to 10 thou. The cylinders are already on 40 thou, but honed out very nice and within spec. So I only replaced the rings. New water and oil pumps. Will see when it is running if it needs any other work on it.
May have a problem work wise, so I need to get the truck going.

Please, pretty please, while all the wiring is exposed won't you check and see where the intermittent unit is for the wipers. I can't trace the wire without pulling an unwrapping the entire wiring harness?

Nic I will have a look over the weekend. I have tried to look but am not sure where it is. I will maybe be putting a battery in the weekend to do some wiring, if I get that far or else it will be the weekend after. Will let you know when I find it.

Thanks so much!

Mine's died and I can't find it by following the noise... (Not that it really matters at the moment in the Cape since rain is a thing that happens to the rest of SA)

Hi Nic, have been looking and asking. It seems to me that the relay and timer is all inside the switch itself. When I look at the wiring I will see what I can find.

Looks like that to me as well. The "Solid State" box on the schematic is probably some kind of intermittent relay. Once the circuit has been triggered, the motor keeps the circuit closed until the cycle is complete (gear wheel has copper rings and brushes).

Did some work on the load bin this weekend. I also did some wiring. The relay and timer for the wipers is in the switch on the steering shaft. I also managed to short my circuit sheet that fits behind the dash cluster. Does anyone maybe have one lying around that they dont need? :beg:

If you don't find one, you should be able to bridge any burnt sections by soldering in some bridges of thin wire like you would find in telephone and alarm cables.

Over the last 2 weekends I have repaired, undercoated and sprayed the load bin. Fitted plastic parts. Having long weekend this coming weekend and getting visitors from overseas the weekend after so I wont be doing anything for 2 weekends. :shock2:
Getting there slowly.

Been a while since I posted. Fitted the load bin, did the inside. Finished the fenders and tail gate today. Fenders are not fitted yet, just needed somewhere to put them. Must fit the doors first.

Have not done too much work lately, been a bit sick. Was off on Friday, so got some stuff done. Put the lining in the roof, got most of the floor done, ran out of lining. Did all the interior wiring, roof lights, speaker and reverse camera.

Might not be a bad idea in some respects, Thabo .... get a crew together and just rock up at Roger's place to complete the build so that this saga can get an end! :D:

However, not only will we be stealing Roger's well earned thunder, but we would probably not complete it with the same level of care and perfection that Roger has been devoting to it and that would be a shame. :D:

Anyway, I have a feeling that there will be some further progress this weekend. :winkx:

Maybe add some of the blue lining to the rear panel - you will be surprised how much noise comes through there.

Good morning,

Love this thread, have been following it for a while. Great job on this.

Uncle, that blue liner? Is it an aftermarket material? What are the uses, insulation and sound deadening? Or only one of them?

Can not wait to see this bakkie complete. It is going to look mamba!

Thanks all. Louis, I am using it to try for sound deadening mostly, it does not hold moisture and is cheaper than underfelt. will see how well it works. It is those thin exercise mats that one gets at sport shops.I got mine at Mr Price sports.

I first saw Toerboer use it in his Defender. I was amazed at the sound and heat issolation properties it had.

Then did my Kz's ceiling with it and it was way cooler. After that I did my Isooz from the firewall to the underside of the rear window - this truck I have sold to a mate with the exact same truck and the difference between the 2 are night and day.

The next vehicle was the same mate's Defenderz now you can hold a conversation in the car!

December I stripped the interior my wife's Freelander to wash the carpets....and sommer issolated the whole car!

Maybe I must start a thread on how to properly wash your cars carpets.....

:o: Now there's an idea! I would never have thought of those mats as being that handy. I am also looking into some sound deadening for my bakkie. But dynamat and the like are a bit pricey.
Thabo, i might just use it for a roof lining also as the temp gets up there in the summer time. Please do share something on cleaning the carpets. I am planning to wash and clean the carpets and seats while I have them out to fit the insulation.

It's closed cell foam matting. You can buy it in bulk from Sondor in the perfect width to fit across a Hilux. I've got the interior covered with 6mm. If I had to do it again I'd go for 8mm and do two layers over the transmission tunnel.

The one I used on the roof is a 6 mm with a foil lining on one side which I put o the roof side. On the floor I used a 10 mm one that did not have a foil lining on it. In February we get temp of up to 53 deg, so we will see how much it helps next year.

Hi Nic,

The first vehicle I used the 8 or 10mm (really can't remember) but on the edges where the plasrltic trim had to go back on, in places it was a real female dog to get the parts fitting correctly, thus my move to 6mm.

Maybe the thicker mat upto about 50mm from the edges and a thinner strip on the edges?

Yes Thabo, I stopped mine about 20 mm from the sides, will see.
Made a duct to fit in the cab where the air con duct goes. Made a galvanised frame. Quite difficult angels to do. Covered the frame with masking tape and fiber glassed the inside. Took the tape off and fiber glassed the outside. It must just dry now then I can sand and paint it.

In short,

I strip the interior to remove the carpets completely.

Then find a clean area of cement or paving. Take a hosepipe and wet the whole carpet. The a nice strong detergent is applied and scrubbed with a soft brush.

Rinse properly and hang to dry - it takes a while.

In summer time I let the carpets dry out for 24 hours before reassembly.

Jip Andy, I think I started making the liner when the roof was still off. It will be the only SFA with a solid roof liner, like all modern vehicles come out with today. Fitted the lining today quickly then my glue ran out, so I still have to finish around the doors and windows.

Looks great!

I'm just wondering when your hair rubs against the rooflining, wouls it not generate static electricity or would the cloth isolate it enough?

You could have a shocking experience!

Ja Andy, The fiberglass is about 4 mm thick, so a rivnut will be easy to fit and strong enough. But I dont plan on a roof console any time soon. When I am finnished with the truck I have a caravan that is patiently waiting its turn. :shock2:
Thabo, the roof liner is a little bit higher than the normal one , so my head should not touch it. :lmao: :lmao:
