A "Long" Roof console.

Post by JJBotes »

This was probably the DIY project that I’ve had the worst luck with out of everything I’ve done before. However I did learn a few new things and I’m very satisfied with the end results.
First thing that I learned:
1. There are probably people that can cut 100% straight lines with a Jig-saw, I’m not one of them.
2. Second thing: If you can’t find “spry on glue”, don’t use “contact adhesive glue” to cover wood with carpet.
3. Third thing: Not all “illuminated switches” work on 12v. I knew this ,but didn’t read the spec on the switch before I bought and used them.(very disappointed in myself for this)

So, here are the steps I followed:
1. Measured and cut a piece of cardboard till it fits the curve of the roof lining.
Image
2. Transfer to wood and cut out. Also cut any additional holes needed for the design

3. Make and fit the brackets.

4. Fit the cut-outs to the brackets and make sure it fits as planned.
Image
5. Remove the complete unit from the vehicle, keeping everything intact.

6. Complete the structure of the unit.
Image
7. Remove the brackets and sand everything down till smooth
Image
8. Cover with carpet.

9. Paint.
(I would suggest that if you want to cover or paint anything on the inside, do it before you cover outside. I got this wrong)

10. Fit everything and wire.

11. Test
12. Fit to vehicle.

Just want to mention that I did take out the working parts of the cigarette lighters.

A job very well done JJ .Great of you to mention your shortfalls with the switches and the painting of the consol as this will assist members on the forum to check the components first, as this mistake can so easily be made.

@ChrisF
Jip , skoolgeld sal daar alyd wees.

@larry007
In the front I used the 3 bolts that holds the rear view mirror. At the back , if you remove the dome light you'll find that it is kept in place by 4 screws but there are 8 holes. I've used all 8 those holes.
