How do I fit a RTT on a Canopy?

Post by DawidT »

Guys,

I need some advise please! I want to fit my RTT on my DC fibre glass canopy. Any photos and / or plans would help. I want to fit it and remove after the trip. Then I also need to remove the canopy from time to time!

Would the canopy take the load if I spread it over the entire area or is the structure not good enough for the side ways movement and vibrations on road?

Dawid I would recommend that you rather fit the RTT to the vehicle roof than onto a fiberglass canopy.

You will need a set of tracks (http://www.frontrunner.co.za/spare-comp ... 400mm.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) , Frontrunner sells one for a Hilux, you will have to drill about 10 hole into the roof to fit the Rivnuts for the track. And load bars (fits to the bottom of the RTT)

Thanks. I am not sure of the canopy make but it was sold by Bobaas canopies in Vereeniging / Vanderbylpark - I got it 2nd hand.

It looks like the mounting on the roof is the better option.

Yes I agree. If it was a Beekman you'd have no problems.. Mount it on the roof of the vehicle. That way the weight of the RTT is exactly between the axles too. Better distribution..

Thys my alucab canopy I bought from you has reinforcing, will I be able to fit my RTT on their? I have also thought about the possiblity of taking the RTT off my trailer and occasionally using it on top of my hilux when the need arose.

Yes you will Val. I used to fit my RTT on the back of that canopy, no problems...

If you build a bracket which is supported over most of the canopy for support you should noy have problems...
Make sure that the edges of the canopy on all sides assist with the support. This is where the canopy is strongest.
2-3 mm fla tbar in-between and angle-iron over the ends will make it more than strong enough...
Cheaper in the interim than buying or building a new canopy...

Cool thanks.... It will not stay on their permanently just for some trips where sleeping on the ground may be potentially less safe than on the roof, ie lions and hyenas... I suppose the issue is getting it on and off...., heard that some people have a pulley type system mounted in the garage to lower it onto and off the vehicle.. that will be the next thing I need to get my blonde head around... mmmmmmmmmmm :alvarin: :alvarin: :alvarin: :alvarin: :alvarin:

Adendorf and McNaughtans sell boat/trailer winches that can be used with multiple cable strands. Put ring bolts/pulleys in the roof beams and run the cables through the rings to the winch, bolted to the wall. Wind handle, voila
Happy trails
