Re: My race car - it's alive! But...
So today I carried on farting about in the garage
All the body parts that I took off the car have been primered (bar the bumpers, mirrors and fender trims), and the inside painted white. I can't paint for shit, so my neighbour offered to paint the outside. He actually paints really nicely, so I'm taking him up on his offer.
Still need to put the one door back on the car, then sand it down so he can just grab the gun and paint. Will definately come out better than my efforts lol.
Never wanted it to be a show-quality car, but if I can get it looking fairly pretty it's a bonus
As it stands now:
As you can see, this car needs a serious elevation decrease - will worry about that next week... Will just quickly take out the springs and take them back to the blokes that made them. Need to come down about 80mm all around
Oh ja -pic from yesterday when I did the bonnet pins.
You might also notice the pretty new radiator I put in. Decided to get the Gsi radiator as it's quite a bit bigger than the 1300's. The 1300 radiator fan doesn't fit on that radiator, so I bought 2 x 10" electrical fans for it. They are engaged through a fan switch that I added to the radiator. Comes on at 92 deg C, switches off at 87 deg C. Saw it working a charm with the car idling - easily brought the temp down low enough for the fans to switch off again
Starting look rather suspiciously like a car...

Did you manage to sort the compression problem? Was it a ring or sticking valve?

Re: My race car - it's alive! But...
Sold the Merc to someone who wanted it real bad. Would anyways have battled to find the time to work on it...
Long overdue update...
8v motor died... Properly...
Decided to just get an import motor and go from there
Picked the new motor up from Turbo Toys yesterday morning, along with a 16 row oil cooler. Then headed off to Goldwagen to get a new cambelt, tensioner, rollers, oil filter, oil and whatnot. Spent the rest of the day with the family, so nothing done to the car.
This morning I first got busy taking the 8v motor out. Decided to take the head off during the process.
Now it takes a really well trained eye to see exactly why this engine stopped working
Piston for sale. Low mileage. Bargain
Got the motor out, and started prepping the 16v. First got the a/c pump, p/s pump, starter and alternator off. Then took off the flywheel and timimg belt cover. Pulled the pressure washer out and gave it a proper wash. Roundabout that time the rain showed up, so I moved everything back in the garage. Took off the tappet cover and gave it a drop of paint, and called it a day.
Next to do is fitting the new crank seals and a new tappet cover gasget. Can't do anything else or I void the 30 day warranty on the motor. Want to try get the motor in the bay during this week, so I can concentrate on doing whatever needs to be done to get the motor running next weekend. This includes (but is not limited to ) wiring the tps (5 wires on this one vs 3 on the old one), making the Corsa fuel rail fit ( No tank return on the 16v rail), see if the Dicktator can operate the mcgodie in the intake manifold that varies the intake runner length, make the Corsa coilpack fit... The list goes on...
Feels good to work on it again

Re: My race car - it's alive! But...
Was a brand new piston. Seems the rod bolts came loose. Don't know how the heck that happened - I know I torqued it to the recommended settings.
Anyway, thankful that this happened now rather than on the racetrack

Re: My race car - it's alive! But...
Small update
Got the 16v motor ready to go in. New main seals are in, cambelt, rollers, tensioner etc done. Added an adjustable fuel pressure regulator after having modified the fuel rail so I have a return to the tank, Corsa coil pack mounted (looks lekker there if I say so myself). Got a set of plugleads for a C20XE, as the Corsa leads are a bit long and makes it look really messy. Can hopefully get it in the engine bay this afternoon. Will see how things go with work

Re: My race car - it's alive! But...
Got a bit done today. Fitted the new oil pump, water pump, cambelt, rollers etc.
Once that was done, I set about getting the motor in the bay - mission accomplished. Tomorrow I'll set about getting the alternator in there, then get busy with the wiring and plumbing. Looks like the exhaust is going to catch on the front anti-roll bar... Will still see about sorting that - might just ditch the anti-roll bar completely haha
Anyway - pics...
Motor in!
Blanking plate I made to replace the EGR or whatever it's called
Fuel pressure regulator in place so that I have a return to the tank
Tomorrow we carry on...

Re: My race car - it's alive! But...
No major updates for today. Managed to find the hoses I need to sort the cooling system out. Did a fair bit of wiring. Alternator in with the bracket modified so I can tension the belt properly. Fitted the branch. Fwiw - the quality on Cowley branches has gone down the tubes...
Anyways, tomorrow I still need to connect the alty and starter, fuel lines, couple of other bits and bobs. Need to go get a piece of vaccuum hose for the Dicktator - was running tps with the 8v. Also need to get a serial/usb cable so I can upload a map for the 16v running MAP.
Bit of luck I may just start it tomorrow...

It's alive!!! Again lol
Finished all the plumbing and wiring, loaded a different map, started first time. Motor sounds excellent. The map is quite a bit off for my motor though, but at least it starts.
Carrying on with other stuffs in the meantime
Tomorrow nothing gets done being Christmas, Friday I'll carry on with more, and the weekend will see some major things happening... You may want to check in on this thread come Monday...

Re: My race car - new motor fired up!
Thanks, Andy
Busy day today, but not too much done on the car actually lol
Spent most of the day sorting out the garage. Things were getting kinda out of hand haha. Anyways, garage is now all organized again. Everything ready for tomorrow - got a friend coming to help tomorrow too.
As mentioned earlier, not that much done on the car itself, apart from fitting the oil catch can and new accelerator cable. Removed the seats again, as I'm not happy with how they are positioned - sitting too high. Still have to figure out how I'm going to fit the driver's seat with them fancy brackets I bought from ATS. Need to find someone who is real good at welding and working with steel to help me out with that - I can't weld to save my butt.
Anyways - a pic or 2
Oil catch can in, must still straighten it
The car as it stands tonight
For the first time in a while I am actually genuinely excited about this project again...

Re: My race car - new motor fired up!
Good day's work done today
Most of yesterday's graft was in preparation for today...
Paint!
My buddy getting busy
All done
The paint as applied is actually stunning already. I will obviously still flat and polish, then it should look amazing.
Tomorrow I'll set about putting the handbrake lever back again, finish up the centre console, and maybe getting the seats in the way I want them. If the paint is ready for it by Monday, I'll flat and polish...
Then it's assembly time again - woohoo!

Only bits that require outside intervention is the exhaust, dyno and wheel alignment. Hoping these blokes are open in the first week of Jan....

Ja the go-faster colours ae coming on in the next couple of days haha
Was originally planning on keeping the car all white, but last time we went to watch racing I noticed just how boring a car looks like that - you just don't notice it between the other cars at all.
Now the look of ths car once done, is something I wouldn't be caught dead in as a daily drive. But that's OK - BECAUSE RACECAR

Know exactly what you mean, was just having a 'dig' - a nice fat challenge stripe off-centre over the top might be common, but it looks good.

Maybe, but it might cause the car to unexpectedly veer off the track into the rough.

Re: My race car - getting all dressed up!
Hehehe.
Today's update
Didn't flat and polish today, as I felt the paint was not quite ready for it yet. Got busy with other bits in the meantime.
Fitted the oil cooler
Also fitted the remote oil filter housing, fitted and wired in the oil pressure and oil temperature sensors.
I still need the pipes to be made up for the cooler and whatnot, but I seriously doubt I'll find anybody still open this time of the year. Will just have to wait a bit...
Put the centre console back in place, and connected most of it. Just need to finish the ignition panel and then the wiring should be all done
Saw this today, had to have it lol

Re: My race car - getting all dressed up!
So today I did the flat and polish thing. Came out pretty good. It's not a showroom finish, but that does not bother me one bit - it's a racecar
Thanks to Polony's advice I managed to find a place to do the hoses for the oil cooler. Decided to go with the steel braided teflon hose, so I first brought everything home to get the lengths and angles perfect. Tomorrow morning the hoses go back to get the fittings crimped. Also found a suitable oil filter for the setup
Fitted the tail lights and rear bumper stiffener. Tomorrow I can fit the bumpers, fender trims etc - gilonna start looking like a car now haha
No pics today - will take a good couple tomorrow

Re: My race car - getting all dressed up!
Fairly busy day today.
Picked up my hoses nice and early, and proceeded with fitting them.
Then got busy putting the rest of the car together.
So that's where it's at now.
The to-do list is finally getting shorter
Seriously needs stickers now...

Re: My race car - getting all dressed up!
So I'm back from holiday and busy on the cab again. Spent most of today sorting an issue out with the oil cooler setup - think it's sorted now. Then also fitted the new springs - stance looks way better.
While on holiday I showed pics of the car to my mate, and said to him I need to do something bout the appearance as it looks a bit out of sorts. He gave me an idea and I love it! Certainly not gonna be a theme I've seen on a car ever before. Don't want to give it away, but it's a quirky cartoon character that is certainly gonna give my age away - it originated the same year that I was born lol
Free ride around the track to whoever guesses it right - just get to the track :D

Hmmmm ...... You don't give your age, so that makes it a bit more challenging.
I'm guessing your age to be 41 - 43 yrs, so born somewhere around 1972 ...... so I'm thinking "Scooby Doo"
Someone else will have to take the ride around the track if I'm right .... I'm too far away .... maybe I can nominate someone.
I see Kevin posted while I was thinking it out and typing ..... he also figures on 1972 YOB ...... hmmmm

Re: My race car - getting all dressed up!
The "badoembadoem" also made me think of the Pink Panther, but he was created in 1963 which I think is a bit too early for Andre'.
Mr. Linear / La Linea / Line man? (1971/72)
Speedy Gonzales? .... Might be apt for the little Corsa, but there's no "badoem", just " andele andele, ariba ariba".

You've already got some blue background for Mr Linea, so it should work quite well.
Maybe one of him 'spitting' at the back (for the okes behind), running on the sides (for when you pass the okes) and holding up a trophy on the bonnet for when you win.

Re: My race car - getting all dressed up!
Another busy day.
First put the handbrake back (No - not the wife... That funny lever that makes you turn real quick haha). Then spent most of the day fitting my race seat. Heluva job. Didn't want to use the standard rails as they just don't give a solid feel, and the seat sits too high. Went and bought a 500 x 500 3mm steel plate, and set about molesting it. After a bit of trimming I had it as I wanted, then set about mocking up the position of the seat. Marked out the mounting points and drilled the holes for them. Turned the plate upside down, put the bolts through and welded them in place. Then using my appalling welding skills I had it all in place. Also fitted 2 M12 bolts at the back that are bolted through the body to add extra strength/stability.
Next I put the seat in, and it went in perfectly. Seat angle is spot-on, leg still comfortably bent when the clutch pedal is all the way in, arms comfy. I actually always sit fairly close to the steering wheel - just more comfy for me, and makes it easier to drive when going balls-to-the-wall. Seat position is nice and low, and I know the banner sticker that goes on the top of the windscreen won't obscure my vision. Had a look at how things sit when I'm wearing my helmet, and there is about 2 inches of space between my pot and the rollcage... Good...
I then stood back and wondered what to do next. Decided that seeing as there is still so much to do, I'll just start at the back and work my way to the front...
Fitted the tailgate rubber as well as the window rubber. Put the towing strap in place (rules state no metal prodruding tow hitch-thingies). Found a leftover set of numberplates from the turbo UTE's days and fitted it - why not haha. Also put the fuel filler flap in place.
Really starting to come together now

Back at work, so progress slows down...
Tonight I fitted the passenger side window and rubbers, as well as the door rubber. Makes a big change - now when you slam the door it doesn't go KLANG-klang-klang anymore... Now it just goes KLANG! Haha
Will do the driver's side tomorrow morning before graft
